Trie new ship is decked and masted with Douglas fir from the American West Coast. And it is more than likely that the forests of this region will supply the stuff for the reconstruction of "Plimoth Plantation," a project that has grown from the Mayflower II adventure. A 100-acre tract at the mouth of the Eell river in Plymouth Jras been secured as the site for replicas of the 19 half-timber houses, or huts, that the Pilgrim Fathers raised in 1620-1621. Each structure will have the shape and dimensions of its orig inal. They are to stand on the slope of old Leyden street. And at the top of the hill the first of all the meeting houses of New England will be reconstructed. Timber Town For many years the legend grew that Plymouth Plantation was originally a settlement of log cabins. Countless paintings and drawings were published showing rdmes of a kind that were unknown in North America until a colony of Swedes settled in Pennsylvania a hundred years or more later. They were th first to build the standard In cabin of American Vertebrae of Sea Reptile Discovered Berkeltf , Calif. W A Un iversity of California paleontol ogy department curator says ver tebrate sections discovered re cently la ths Los Banos foothills are from th largest sea reptile On record A 10O-million-y ear- old pjsjsiassur. Dr. S. D. Wells termed the discovery a "significant find." The bonos ware uncovered by Watsonville students at Monter ey Peninsula College In Monter ey. "The vertebrae sections are connecting links of the monster's neck," Dr. Wells said, "and there's a good chance other parts and possibly the skull may be found." Authorities described the ple siosaur as an extinct Mesozoic marine reptile that inhabited the North America's and Europe. It was characterized by a very long neck a small head and four limbs developed as paddles for swimming. The curator said there have been only a few such discoveries in California, the latest in the hills west of Fresno. "Because the reptile had very sharp teeth, it couldn't chew its food and had a gizzard with which to 'chew' and digest what it ate" as it fed on fish and other sea creatures, he said. Dr. Wells said there was little monetary value to the find so far. "It usually takes $10,000 or so to dig out enough bones to construct a skeleton and another $10,000 to place it on exhibition he said. Half the meat produced in the world is beef or veal. Four-tenths is pork; less than one-tenth is mutton. history. The Pilgrims were persons who had been accustomed to the availability of lumber and other finished materials in all forms for home building in both England and Holland. But it was not until 1642 that a chron icler was able to write: "Further the Lord hath been pleased to turn all the wigwams, huts and hovels the English dwelt in at their first coming, into orderly, fair and well-built houses, well furnished many of them." No doubt it is the houses of 1642 rather than the huts of sod, rough-hewn timbers and wattles of 1622 that will be re constructed for the modern "Plimoth Plantation" project. Parson Capen House A single big room with fire place and chimney at one end was the pattern for the earliest American houses of New Eng land. As life softened for the settlers two rooms of equal size came into style, with a fireplace for each room. Then a giant chimney was tried out in the center of the family home, with room and fireplace on either side. The plan became popular in no time. The Parson Capen House, built in 1683 at Topsfield, Mass., still stands as a fine example of the best in American homes after 60 years of settlement and growth in New England. Its story tells how young Rev. Joseph Capen brought his bride home to an old-time mud hut with wattled roof and scanty! timber frame. She balked at the door and fled for home. Her father persuaded her to go back to her poor parson but only by promising to build the pair one of the best homes in New England. And there it still stands. So romance of the long ago comes alive again in the tales of old that are remembered with the coming of Mayflower II and the project to reconstruct "Pli mouth Plantation." said Ordinance for the purpose of 1 tests but no protests were at such time maoe to or received Dy tne coun cil to the laying of said water main tne assessing of the cost thereof as aforesaid, and said Council, having considered the matter and deeming that said water main was and is of material benefit to said City, and that all property to be assessed therefor will be benefited to the extent of the probable amount of the respective as sessments to be levied against said property, did order said water main laid.
