Ori ginally, ther-; were only the x-rays, and Dr Alvarez gradually me voltage or hitting power of these rays was increased until now they are so powerful that they can easily go through the body and out the other side. Then came radium, and this was found particularly helpful in certain types of cancer, especially the one in the neck of the womb. Later there came very powerful radiations ob tained with cyclotrons, also rays from the radium-like isotopes that can be swallowed or in jected. Later there came the Van der Graff machine, and the li near accelerators which are like guns, shooting tremendous ly powerful ultramicroscopic bullets into the cancer. Then came cobalt that has been made radioactive so that it resembles a large lump of ra dium. This is put into a big bomb, or container, which is de signed to protect the users from stray radiations. The radiation that is directed at the patient comes out through an opening in one side of the bomb. Court Records MLMCIPAL COt'RT Leonard Ray Baughn, violation of have rule. S10. Mavo Foundation Recently, in Quebec City, Drs. ! Ivan H. Smith and J. S. Lott re 1 ported before the meeting of the ; American Radium Society that I radiation from Cobalt 60 has certain advantages over other ! radiations in the treatment of i certain cancers, such as those j in the mouth, the larynx (voice j box), the esophagus (gullet) and j the urinary bladder. Sometimes the treatment is I for palliation and sometimes I with the hope of curing. Of 13 I patients with cancer of the voice box. 12 seem to have been cured; of 18 with the usually very-hard-to-treat cancer of the gullet, five are alive and free from signs of the disease, for periods ranging from 28 to 48 months. Of 22 pa tients treated for cancer of the urinary bladder , 12 are alive and free of disease for periods ranging from 18 to 62 months. A good point is that in the treatment of cancer of the mouth the patients' distress is less than it is with treatment from some other type of radia tion.
