Professional newcomer Wiffie Smith, a freckle-faced lass with a "near magic" putter who shattered men's par to set a course record, took a one-stroke lead today into the second round of the Ladies' j PGA championship. j The 1956 British and French j amateur titlist from St. Clair. I Mich., showed her heels to 25 of ! the nation's lop women golfers j Thursday by blasting a 2-under- j par 68 over the creek and wood- j land -marked Churchill Valley I Country club course. Miss Smith, who turned pro ' just last February after 10 years on the links, fired a 4-under-par 32 on the front nine snd shrugged off a pair of bogeys after making the turn. Tour Birdies Dropping six and eight-foot putts with unconcern to score ' four birdies on the first nine, her ! first round card was good sr ough to establish a low for the 767-yard layout and keep her a stroke ahead of the 69s posted by defending LGPA champion Marline Bauer llagge, Ruth Jes sen and Louise Suggs. Mrs. Hagge, playing out of Dallas, Tex., was even with the 20-year-old pace-setter at the end of nine holes, held steady most of the backstretch and needed only a par 4 on the 18th for what would have been a ty ing 68 first-round score. But her second shot landed in a sand trap and she took two putts to hole out after chipping to with in 10 feet of the pin. The first-day showing of Miss Jessen. Seattle, Wash., was a minor surprise. She was the first to tee off and led all early fin ishers with her 68 until Miss Smith "came home hot."
