Utah Highway Patrol Network To Get New Link St.lt Lakt City 'U Melting of mow on a high peak in south eastern Utah soon will give tech nicians their opportunity to build the newest link on the Utah Highway Patrol radio net work that already is the key tone of law enforcement over the state's 84,993 square miles. The new unit will be a power ful "repeater station" on Abajo Peak, an 11.400-foot-high moun tain sfven miles west of Mon ' ticello. The equipment will put ut such a strong signal that virtually all "blind spots" re maining on the network will be removed. The Abajo repeater will ex pedite communications among troops and other law enforce ment officers scattered over the uranium and oil-rich deserts, mountains and mesas of the Colorado Plateau area. A jmilar automatic, unmanned relay station has been in opera tion for some time on 11.200 foot Scott's Peak in the jagged Wasatch Mountains above the ski resort of Brighton, east of Salt Lake City. The Scott's Peak installation strengthens signals broadcast and heard by officers throughout northern Utah. Some preliminary work on the Abajo unit was done last year and superintendent Lyle Hyatt said he anticipated it could go into operation early this summer after melting of the snow has permitted opening of roads need ed to haul equipment to the site. Once In operation. Abajo will be maintained when mainte nance is necessary during win ter months by crews reaching it by helicopter. Choppers aiready are used to service Scott's Peak equipment. Hyatt, in a United Press inter view, reported that the network already has 21 base stations, 10 of them on 24-hour daily sched ules, and about 380 mobile units. Wayne Morse says he was misquoted by reporters who were present the other night and c o v ered his v i t r iolic e x c h a nges with Indiana's roly-poly Sen. H o mer Cape hart. The w a y it came out in the papers M o r se called Capehart " a cup of rancid ig norance." Capehart had hopped on Morse for his comparing Pres ident Eisenhower With Dave Beck, saying Morse was "intel lectually dishonest." The Congressionad Record, in which all debates are recorded, offers no proof of exactly what Morse called Capehart because Morse decided better of it later and had it stricken from the per manent record. But to keep the record straight, he c h a racterized his portly colleague as a "tub of rancid ignorance."
