Mayo Foundation Or Alvarez Epilepsy and lh School Child What should a school teacher do when a child in her class has a convulsion? If she can keep calm and un afraid, she can help much in quieting the fears of the other children, and later she can make his path easier for the poor child who fell un conscious. Un fortunately, the number of chil dren with a convulsive disorder is large. In three-fourths of the cases the trouble shows up in the first two decades of life. Later, the child has a good chance of getting over his ten dency to fall especially if he is well treated with one of the new drugs. j Parent should never keep the child from going to school, ' especially when he or she is j bright. This would be a great privation. I have letters from epileptics who said how un happy they were during the years when their parents kept them hidden and would not let ' them go to school. As one wom an wrote, he will be eternally I grateful to the nice old doctor : who discovered her hidden away : on a farm, and talked her par ents into letting her be treated and then sent to school. Eventu ally, she graduated from col lege, she married, she is now ap parently over her disease, and she is happy. Booklet for Teachers I have received an excellent booklet for teachers, prepared by the United Epilepsy Associa tion (Long Island Chapter, 93-16 244th St., Bellerose, 26, N.Y.) This tells how, when the child falls, she should be left alone until he comes to. The teacher must show no alarm. After the child wakes, he should be al lowed to be quiet for a while. The other children should simply be told that the child has an illness; that there is no danger, and that later he is likely to get over it. Experts say that the common policy of concealment on the part of the families of these chil dren is partly to blame for the misunderstandings that are now so common. Help from the pub lic cannot be gained with se crecy Seizures are not a mystery; they don't come from a wrath ful God; they are due to a little electric storm that comes out of an abnormal spot in the brain. The seizures are not contagious: they are not at all shameful, and they cannot possibly do the watchers any harm. Parents should never object to their chil dren's playing with an epileptic child; I cannot see how this could possibly do anyone any harm. If the child, in spite of good medical help, still has many seizures, he will probably have to be put in a special class or a special school, if that can be found. TOWNE Beauty Shopps Ph. He is 64-year-old Thomas Hudson Jones who works in the heraldic branch of the Army Quartermaster Corps here. He designed many of the 60 million medals awarded during World War II. Jones recently modernized the Army's artillery insignia by super-imposing a missile over the traditional crossed cannon. Another recent project was a seal for the St. Lawrence Sea way corpdration. When the white marble tomb for the unknown warrior of World War I was built in 1921 Jones' design was selected from drawings submitted by 74 top sculptors and architects. The sculptor, who has won the Prix de Rome for his art, works in his own studio when not designing "scrambled eggs" for an Air Force general's cap or a seal for an assistant deputy undersecretary.
