He folt the collection would not Have any gn;ai value. -Nonetheless, he thought it would be w-iie to have it appraised before selling it even lhot;h the ap praiser discovered two a'ampa ti,at marie the appraisal profita ble a discovery that mis'nt well have been missed by many deal ers and experts. It consisted of an en elope that haa boon ma led at Seattle from the Aia-.ita-Yi.kon Pacific Railroad Exposition held from June 1 to Oct. 16, 1909. There were two 2-cent stamps oi the envelope, exposition comrr.emor- GOBLET GETS MORE KEIPECT NOW VALUE IB KM OWN My discovery of the maple ieaf.gi'ble. wav the greatest argu ment for tlie safety razor I've ever come across. If I'd been uu.g a straight edge 1 probably wouldn't be w riting this now. Even aa it wit. it took a quarter of an hour ith styptic pencil, cold water and bandaid to repair my throat. I was standing in front of the mirror and trying to shave like a baseball star I d seen in TV ad when suddenly my eye spot ted a yellow goblet on top of the shaving cabinet, and . - - But to net back to the goblet. It was standing against the wall where only a tall man could se it. and it contained rusty razor blades and old tooth brushes. Yet dirty and grimy as it t could still see enough of its real color to know it for a vi brant, golden yellow. And as I washed it out with plenty of soap and hot water NAME REVERSAL OK COJK He was a tall young man, determined fellow, too, becue he waited patirntly for Jack to get rid of the other customers in his coin shop. "What I'd like to know, sir," he said, '-'is, are both thef coins phony orinly one of them," He laid, two gold pieces on the counter. They were each about as big as a half dollar. "They were left to me by my father when he died ten years ago, but I just got them the other day,'' he said. Jack grunted something unin telligible and picked up a coin. I took the other one. On one side of it was the bust of a bearded, bald-headed man over the date 1902. From the inscription I could see that it was Oscar II, king of the Swedes and Nor wegians. On the reverse were the royal arms, the denomina tion 20 kroner and another in scription. 21-FOR SALE, MISCELLANEOUS SUCTION or irrigation hose l1' V 2"' ten ft. lengths. Money; safe: cash register. Seward, Lincoln's famous Sec retary of State. All that was important, of course, but the crucial thing the appraiser noted was til at the two stamps were joined at their nar row ends, and that the performa tion by which they had been torn from the coil consisted of only two small holes. On many of the coil stamps sold from vending machines the 'amps were joined along the long side, furthermore, in addi tion to holes punched along the jointure, there would be slits made by tiny knife blades in the machine. If the stamps used on the en elope mentioned above had been one of the other types, there mil would have been a premium value, though not so big A it was. thanks to the ap praisers evaluation, the owner got S2J0 for that one envelope if almost came alive in my hands. The maple leaves they re grape leaves, really extend ut the sides to about an inch b om the rim. The glass is plain from where they end. When I walked into the break fast room a little later, goblet in my hand, my hostess instantly wanted to know where I had found it. She and her husband looked at each other accusingly. The piece had been missing for a couple of years at least. "But it's only a goblet,"' he said. "Just an odd one." "It belonged to my mother," his wife replied. 'It doesn't have to have any other value."' "But it has," I said, explain ing that the pattern, produced by Pennsylvania firm in the 1870s was now quite rare. "A yellow goblet like this is worth $50 at least." The husband looked at it with new respect. DOtSIf T MAKE THEM PHONY Jack's coin was much the same. There was the bust of Os car II over the date 1902. But the arms were different, and Os car was described as the King of the Norwegians and Swedes. 1 called Jack's attention to the re versal. "That's what bothers me. dir." broke in the young man. "Why is it Swedes and Norwegians on one coin and the other way on the other?" "You're a native American, aren't you?" Jack asked. The young fellow nodded. "And you don't know much about your father's country. Well, Oscar was king of both countries up to 1905. As for the coins, they are perfectly good. I'll even give you S25 each for them, the full catalogue price. But you'd be wise to keep them." And Young Mr. Guilderstern did keep them.
