The weather was ideal, in the low 70s, and with just a slight breeze rustling the flags at both end of Stockton's Baxter stadium, the scene of the Pacific Associa tion AAU track meet. As Bowden crossed the finish line the sun dipped below the horizon and the field lights were turned on almost simultaneously with his finish. Bowden Near Record His lap times were 59.7. 61.1, 59 8 and a fast final 440 of 58.1. Bowden"s winning time was only sevrn tenths of a second off the world record set by Aus tralia's John Landy in 1954. Bowden's previous best mile from a standing start was 4:09.9, posted earlier in the season against Stanford.
