Of ten the woman says she has seen seyeral doctors and no two agreed as to what should be done. We doctors have a bad reputation for not agreeing, and always have had it. One phy sician said, "Leave ,it alone, it is not toxic and is not doing you any harm." Another said, "If I had that I'd have it right out." Another said, "It isn't doing you any harm now, but there is one chance in 20 that it is or will be cancerous, so it should come out." "Another said, "I'rf destroy the goiter with radioactive io dine," and the next one said, "No, that is not a completely harmless remedy and I would prefer not to give it to you." An other physician, after getting an estimate of the basal metabolic rate and finding it to be minus 10 per cent, put her on thyroid substance. The next doctor said, "That's silly; anything up to minus 20 per cent is within the limits of normal so forget it." Another doctor wanted to give her radioactive iodine and then to get a "scintillation picture" of her goiter to see if there was any tumor in it. Usually, one sees a few types of goiter. One is a largely harm less type that appears in young women in certain families or cer tain districts where there is but little iodine in the water. I do not bother with such small goiters, and I do not fear cancer because the woman is young. Then there are the thousands of so-called rubbery, non-toxic goiters in which the woman's skin is cool and her pulse normal in rate. In younger women I do not insist on having such a goiter removed unless it is disfiguring, or it is growing fast and pressing on her windpipe. A few such goiters grow down under the upper end of the breast bone, and there they can press on the air tube and obstruct it. Such a goiter should, be removed. I have seen many women who said that after .getting the thing out they felt much better gen erally. In the cases of older wom en I think it is well to get rid of the thing also because of the chance of its becoming cancer ous. If one waits until one is sure' of this, it may be too late to save the woman's life. There are nodular goiters, some toxic and some not. I like to see them removed because of the danger of cancer. I like to see a toxic or an exophthalmic goiter (with eyes prominent) re moved quickly before it poisons the heart"1 muscle, the nervous system and the liver. Easily Recognized One can usually recognize quickly the woman with a toxic goiter. She may have a reddish skin and prominent or scared looking eyes. She bats her eye lids often; she is restless and may not sit still. The skin of her hand is feverish to the touch, and her hand may have a fine tremor. She is likely to perspire too much. She may want to open windows and kick off her bed clothes. In spite of eating well, she is likely to lose weight. She may get diarrhea. Often at home her relatives are puzzled and hurt because she is irritable and unreasonable and a times not quite rational. After years of toxicity her pulse may become very irreg ular. Her heart muscle then is likely to be severely damaged. Her liver, also, will get damaged and full of fat: This is why no woman with a toxic goiter should be allowed to go untreated for months and years. Another sign of a toxic goiter is a weakness in the woman's legs. She may not be able to step up on a high step without pulling with her hands. Occasionally, after an opera tion for a very toxic goiter, the surgeon will find that in his ef forts to keep from having to operate again, he has taken a bit too much tissue. Then the woman will have to take some thyroid substance every days. People Who Conquer Handicaps In the old days, and perhaps even yet, many people when se verely crippled or. handicapped by an accident or an illness, feel like giving up and quitting. A few brave persons don't give up. I was just reading about a nurse, Marlyss Erickson, of Milwaukee, wh(j had her right hand shot off in .a hunting accident. Her first thought was that her days as a nurse were ended, but she went ahead with her training; she got an artificial hand and learned how, with it, to fill syringes, change bandages, give a bed bath, turn patients over, change their bed, and do all the many things that have to be done by a good nurse. When out on the street she wears an artificial hand with a glove on it, but when in the hos pital she wears a two-pronged hook which, with a harness around her shoulders, enables her to do all sorts of things. She does everything that any other nurse can do. But the reports said Egypt would attach a number of con ditions, including a promise that such actions would not amount to recognizing Israel and would not prejudice Egypt s position. The reports said the condition al acceptance of arbitration was given to UN Secretary - Treas urer Dag Hammarskjold in New York by Egyptian delegate Omar Loufti. Wimberly has taken under advisement a claim chal lenging the right of attorney Avery Thompson to hold office as Douglas county district attor ney. Thompson, a Democrat, was named by Gov.
