(Jimmy) Hoff a seeks the presidency soon to -be vacated by Dave Beck. Beck, under fire on charges of having used teamsters funds to enrich himself and his fam ily, announced Saturday that he would not run for reelection to another five-year term next September. Hoffa Under Fix Teamsters sources said they "would not be surprised" if the dapper Hoffa, ninth vice presi dent of the union in Detroit, decides to try for the top spot. However, Hoffa is under two federal indictments and can be expected to meet opposition in side the giant labor organization. The United Press learned that Beck met secretly in" Seattle Saturday with Hoffa, Einar Mohn, Beck's executive assistant and Teamsters Vice President Frank Brewster before announ cing his decision. Sources close to the union here, however, said they doubt ed published reports that Beck offered at the Seattle meeting to resign immediately if Mohn were named his successor. Mohn Under Indictment Mohn is under indictment for contempt of Congress for refus ing to answer questions before the predecessor committee of the Senate Rackets committee. Hoffa has been indicted for allegedly attempting to plant an informer on the Senate Rackets committee and is scheduled to go on trial here June 17. He also is under indictment for wire tapping in Detroit. Another teamsters vice-president, John T. O'Brien, of Chi cago, is the only announced can didate so far. "Whatcha got in the trunk?" he asked the two occupants. "Tents," the driver replied. The deputy saw a bag in the back seat and asked what was in it. "Stakes." "Whatcha trying to be Boy Scouts?" asked the deputy." The men explained they were Boy Scout executives on their way to a camp with equipment. OP) John Moore jumped out of bed to close the windows when he thought he heard an early-morning thunder storm. I m Volunteer firemen ia the Pine Meadows section were' chided when New Hartford volunteers beat them to a fire at the rear of . the Pine Meadows fire station. How ever, the Pine Meadows chief, George Gronden, informed the New Hartford visitors after they fought the blase for an hour that it was an underground dump fire that has burned for 17 years and probably will do so for 17 more. Hometown, Pa. (IF) For many years Hugh Pendexter Jr. was a newspaperman and publicist in Philadelphia. Mrs. Pendexter raised dogs as a hobby. Recently they brought a country store here. He appeared before the House Appropriations-' Committee and urged passage of $400,000 for Umatilla river revetments and flood control for Pendleton and for the Pendleton State hospital that is built on the river. He also presented the commit tee a program which he said offers a sound, economic ap proach to the development of eastern Oregon, and summed up by saying administration funds in the 1958 budget for an initial start in the construction of the John Day dam in eastern Oregon should be approved. Cohen stood by remarks about Police Chief William H. Parker, former Mayor Fletcher Bowron and the Los Angeles Police Com mission even after the American Broadcasting Co. aired a nation wide apology to local city offi cials Sunday night for remarks made on the Mike Wallace show May 19. "Any retractions made by per sons in regard to the television show I appeared on with Mike Wallace on the ABC network do not go for me," Cohen declared. Corvallis To Vote On School Budget Corvallis API The Corvallis scho'ol board has prepared a new budget for the fiscal year 1957 58 for presentation to voters June 17. The new budget is $82,329 less than one defeated May 21. Also being resubmitted is a proposed bond issue which is $110,000 less than the original. The new budget totals $1,945, 725 and calls for a new tax levy of $734,413 outside the six per cent limitation. The bond issue was cut mainly by eliminating a maintenance building. The new figure is $100,000. Tupper Lake, N.Y. (IP) Sounding the fire department siren as a 10 pin. curfew proved too much for residents of this village. Their complaint: the noise woke up the children. Shorter Sentences Refused by Court Washington HP) The Su preme Court refused today to shorten the jail sentences of gambler Frank Costello and others who challanged a quirk in the 1939 internal revenue code. Others whose cases are gov erned by today's opinion include rubber magnate .Poncet Davis, Akron,. Ohio.; L. B. Binion, Dal las, Tex.; and Thomas W. Banks, Minneapolis gambler. The 7 to 2 decision came in the case of Sam Achilli, Chicago au tomobile dealer. : Justice Felix Frankfurter spoke for the majority. Dissent ers were Justices William O. Douglas and Hugo L. Black. , The legal 'point was. which of two tax laws should control the sentence of persons convicted un- Court Reverses Convictions of Grunewald, Others Washington (IP) The Su preme Court today reversed the conviction of Henry (The Dutch man) Grunewald and two others in a $160,000 tax fix case and ordered a new trial for all three. Besides Grunewald, Washing ton influence man and wire-puller, the court's unanimous ruling applied to former Internal Rev enue official Daniel A. Bolich and Max Halperin, a New York lawyer. The action was announced Is a 33-page opinion written by Justice John Marshall Harlan. Reversal of. the 1955 convic tion of the three men was based on an improper charge to the jury by .the trial judge. Free On Bond The charges related to a 1948 government investigation of pos sible .tax fraud by Pattullo Modes, Inc., a clothing firm, and the Gotham Beef Co., both of New York. - Grunewald was convicted with the other two of conspir acy to defraud the government. Each drew a five-year jail term but all three have been free on bond. The trial testimony was that Halperin sought help, from Grunewald to get the Pattullo and Gotham prosecutions drop ped. Bolich withheld prosecution and Grunewald was paid $100, 000' for the Pattullo cases; $60, 000 . for. the .other. . - Iii addition. Halperin was con victed for corruptly attempting to influence Gotham Beef of ficials in what they would say before a 1952 Brooklyn Grand Jury.
