TEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE DROIT WHIFFS 15 BATTERS AS CUBS SUBDUE BRAVES; REDLEGS. DODGERS' WON By FRED DOWN United Presi Sports Writer Rookie Dick Drott is making good for the ChicagQ Cubs but he couldn't be a bigger hero in his native Cincinnati today if he had just discovered a magic cure all for Ted Kluszewski's ailing back. The 20-year-old Drott struck out a season single-game high of 15 batters Sunday to beat the Milwaukee Braves, 7-5, and the Cubs made it a clean sweep when Ernie Banks' ninth-inning single produced a 5-4 victory in - the nightcap. Drott's perform ance came within two of Dizzy Dean's National league strike out mark and within three of Bob Feller's major league rec ord. The two defeats were a bitter blow to the Braves, who drop ped into third place as the front running Redlegs downed the St. Louis Cardinals. 7-6 on pitcher Hal Jeffcoat's eighth - inning homer and Clem Labine's close out relief pitching enabled the Brooklyn Dodgers to beat the New York Giants, 5-3, and take over second. The Philadelphia Phillies bounced back from a 13-5 loss -to whip the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-3. in the other Nation al league games. Retain First Place The . Chicago White Sox re tained their three-game grip on first place in the American league when they split with the Cleveland Jndians while the New York Yankees and Wash ington Senators divided their, pair. Billy Pierce outdueled Bud Daley for a 1-0 White Sox vic tory before relief ace Ray Nar leski stopped Chicago 4-3, and the Yankees downed the Sena tors, 7-6, after suffering a 9-7 setback. The Boston Red Sox swept the Baltimore Orioles, 9-0 and 5-4 and the Kansas City Athlet ics beat the Detroit Tigers, 3-1 in the other American, league activity. Clemente Gets Four The Pirates slugged out a sea son high of 20 hits, including four by Roberto Clemente and three by Dee Fondy in their op ener but Don Cardwell turned in an eight-hitter and started the Phillies winning rally with a Quarter Midgets Race on Sunday The track at Jackson Hot Springs Sunday was again the site of an afternoon of racing sponsored by the Quarter Midget association. Mike Myres. Sis Richmond and Tim Travis qualified for the trophy dash by getting the fastest times. Along with the trophy dash Mike won the main event. First heat race was won by Janice Lemley in car 57. Num ber 7, manned by Bobbie Bruce also had a good day, winning two heat races and the semi main event. Mike Myres won three tro phies, for the trophy dash, do nated by the Ash'land Lithia Cab company, for the 'main event, donated by the OK Market in Medford, and for high points earned over six weeks, donated by OK Rubber Welders. Contracts covering such mat ters as television and broadcast ing rights for the three clubs in their new sites already have been drawn up and approved. It also was understood that proof will be submitted at the meeting guaranteeing the type of new parks which the Dodgers and Giants desire in Los An geles and San Francisco. The shifts, if approved by the National league, would become effective for the 1958 season. An authoritative base b a 11 source told the United Press that he had seen all the papers which' already have been drawn up and approved by the three clubs. ' Unanimous Vote It would take a unanimous vote by the eight National league club , owners to bring about the shifts. When National league Presi dent Warren Giles last week called for Tuesday's meeting, he refused to discuss the agenda for the session. He merely said the meeting was being held in Chi- cago Tuesday rather than before the annual major league all-star game at St. Louis July 9. Mile Taken By Ibbotson Modesto, Calif.
