On March 8, Ryan found the IXorris outfit guilty of monopoly in the conduct of title fights. The period of anti-trust viola tions extended from June 16, 1949 to May 15, 1953, the gov ernment charged, before the case first came before a judge in February, 1954. But now, Gochberg accuses, the Norris attorneys are trying to prove by witnesses and evi dence that changes in the Nor ris enterprises since 1953 have eliminated monopoly conditions and should earn very lenient decrees in Ryan's final judg ment. The final judgment is ex pected to be handed down in two or three weeks. Jumping Jacjc At Thursday's abbreviated three-hour session, young Goch berg was up and down like a jumpmg-jack as he interposed objection after objection to the testimony of Truman Gibson, secretary to both International Boxing clubs of New York and Illinois. And he engaged in wrangles with John F. Caskey, a defense attorney who was questioning Gibson and introducing a series of financial records of the var ious boxing enterprises as ex hibits. Earlier in the session the judge, while listening to Gib sons testimony about how the Madison Square Garden Corp rented the Garden to its sub sidiary, the New York IBC, in terrupted and said he might "throw open the doors" of the Garden to independent pro moters. He said he probably would insert a decree to that ef fect in his final judgment. (IP) Drivers and mechanics cast anxious glances skyward today amid indications the weather man may be their top foe again in week end qualifications for next Thursday's 500-mile auto race. The forecast of scattered showers was virtually a carbon copy of last week, when only nine drivers beat the cloqk and the rain to nail down spots in the 41st annual Memorial day classic. The trials were scheduled to end at 6 p.m. (E.S.T.) Sunday However, speedway owner Tony Hulman assured car owners and drivers "everybody will get a chance," and that qualifications will be extended to Monday and Tuesday, if necessary to as sure a full field of 33 starters. E3on Gross Records Fourth Straight as Redlegs Boost Lead By TIM MORIARTY United Press Sports Writer Manager Birdie Tebbetts of the Cincinnati Redlegs was really chirping today over the sudden emergence of southpaw Don Gross as a starting pitcher. Strapped for pitching talent three weeks ago, Tebbets pull ed Gross out of the bullpen and Angling Good At Fish Lake Angling at Fish lake has been good right from the start of the season and never has been any better than it has been this week. That is the report from Lloyd Morris, resort proprietor. He said that reports that . fishing has been slow are not correct. Morris said that fishermen for the most part have had no trouble getting trout. He stated that it is true that the size of the trout caught has been running small this season but that almost every angler has been getting "nice" fish. While it has been hard to keep the smaller trout off the hooks, rainbow have been taken up to 21 inches in length. Of some 19 boats on the lake yesterday, Morris said . he only knew of two that had not limited out by mid-afternoon. Still fishing with single eggs has produced good results, Morris reported. It was a move that could lead the Red legs to their first National league pennant since 1940. Since getting his big chance, Gross has posted four straight victories for the front-running Redlegs, including a 6-2 decision over the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday night that enabled Cincinnati to open a two-game lead over the idle Milwaukee Braves. What's the story behind the sudden success of a pitcher who was farmed out to Havana last year for experience and this sea son has allowed only 24 bits and seven earned runs in his last four games? ' According to Tebbets, Gross (sports BOWLING EVERGREEN LEAGUE Tru Mix Concrete Co. won the third round in the Evergreen Bowling league this week, win ning 4 to 0 over Medford. Plaza apartments. MEDFORD GRANTS PASS with the help of coach Tom Fer- rick, has learned to throw a change-up pitch almost over night. "The story of every unsucess ful pitcher is the story of one extra pitch he needed to win," explained Tebbetts. "Many were made by finding it. For instance, Akins To Fight Jim Beecham Washington tW Veteran Virgil Akins and young Jimmy Beecham, a pair of "hungry" sluggers, clash tonight in a na tionally televised 10-round wel terweight bout at Capitol arena. The powerfully-built Akins, fifth-ranked contender for Car m e n Basilio's welterweight crown, is a 7-5 favorite over Beecham. Beecham, described as a "puncher who never stops com ing," is substituting for Randy Sandy, who suffered a cut eye in training. Carl Hubbell with his screw ball, Elroy Face with his fork ball, and Bob Friend and Hal Jeffcoat with their sliders." "This change-up pitch could make Gross," the articulate Cin cinnati manager added hope fully. In Thursday night's game the only scheduled major league contest managed Fred Hutch inson shook up the -slumping Cardinals by switching third baseman Key Boyer to center field, moving shortstop Eddie Kasko to third, and using Eddie Miksis in right field. , Cards Drop Fifth Straight But with Gross tossing that change-up pitch, the Cardinals looked helpless in suffering their fifth straight defeat. Gross allowed only "three hits until the ninth when he gave up singles to Don Blasingame, Stan Musial and Wally Moon. Moon's single with two out scored Blasingame and extend ed his hitting streak through 16 straight games.- Taking no chances, Tebbetts then yanked Gross in favor of Tom Acker, who retired pinch-hitter Joe Cunningham on a game-ending liner to right fielder Wally Post. . The Redlegs, meanwhile, had rapped loser Lindy McDaniel for five runs in the third inn ing. Post's two-run homer ' and a two-run single by Roy Mc Millan featured the big inning. Musial homered in the fourth inning, while Post knocked in Cincinnati's sixth run with S. single in the sixth. The Yankees snapped but of their doldrums by rolling to a 17-hit, 10-7 victory over th5 Dodgers Thursday night in a benefit exhibition game.
