His performance will be for one night. Thompson, who is also a song writer, has been a band leader for about five years. For about four years the band has been voted the nation's top western band in polls conducted by sev eral trade journals. Since he sang "Humpty Dumpty Heart" in 1948, which sold more than million copies, Thompson has sold , more than 18 million records. In the last eight years, he has had 27 of his records listed among the "top ten" played by juke boxes, dies jockies and retail stores. During World War II he en listed in the Navy. He served in 16 states and overseas, where he helped introduce country music. Obituaries CLAUDE E. MILLER Word has been received of the death of Claude E: Miller of Alpine, Texas, May 21. Mr. Miller, the father of the Rev. Claude Miller, pastor of the Temple Baptist church here, was a former resident of Med ford and operated the Medford Hotel Barber shop. ' I Petition Seeks Change In School Boundary The Jackson county district boundary board will hold a hear ing at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, to consider a petition from two Shady Cove residents for a change of boundary from the Elk-Trail school district to the Shady Cove district. The petition stated that if the boundary were changed their children would not have to walk 1 on a narrow highway as they i now must do. The petition added the property involved in the re- ', quest is closer to the Shady 1 Cove school than to the Elk-Trail ! school. Mar . 57 Sharon Planlz Said In Fair Condition Sharon Plantz, 16, of 225 Lin coln rd., Grants Pass, was re ported in "fair" condition but still unconscious at Rogue Val ley hospital today. Miss Plantz, driver of a ve hicle which struck a cement truck May 17 on Highway 99 on Blackwell hill, is suffering serious head injuries. She and five other Grants Pass High school girsl were hospitalized as a result of the accident. They were en ' route to Jackson Hot Springs for a senior class "skip day." Three of the other accident victims are still hospitalized. Yvonne Erickson, 17, patient at Rogue Valley hospital, was re ported in good condition, while Dixie Lee Turk, 17, and Char lene Palmer, 16, patients at Sa cred Heart hospital, were re ported in satisfactory condition today. All are of Grants Pass. Two other passengers in the car, Virginia Spliethof, 16, Grants Pass, and Jo Ann Wood, 17, Rogue River, have been re leased from Sacred Heart hos pital. Applications Asked For Bus Franchise Portland IPI Mayor Terry D. Schrunk Thursday invited any person or firm to apply for a bus franchise here. , He said he wanted the city to enter into negotiations "as soon as possible" to provide an eco nomical mass transportation sys tem for Portland. They will visit Rock Point emergency lookout, the city of Medford reforestation area and will also participate in treasure hunts of forest specimens and pacing contests. Leaders of the 4-H clubs and Clenn Klein and Miss Marjorie Hattan, county 4-H .agents, will accompany the youths. Program for the event was organized yesterday by club leaders, Klein and Douglas Finch, district assistant with the forestry service, who inspected possible sites Thursday.
