ZIOMT MEDTORD (OREOOK) Is That The common assumption is that volcanic activity used to be much greater than it is now. Although it is difficult to prove that this is not so, the presumption of most geologists is that the subterranean energy in the earth's crust is a constant quantity and that the only vari ations which take place are in the locality of its manifesta tions. Professor T. H. Huxley states that "I have never heard of anything to show that move ments of the crust of the earth were any more frequent and se verer in former epochs than they are now." Think back a little. During the past decade, a volcano in Alaska blew its stock; recently a vol canic island appeared in the Sea of Japan; a volcano suddenly popped out of a cornfield in Mexico. Where has the greatest out pouring of lava ocurred within recent times? An East Indies' vol cano, Tamboro, on the island of Cumbawa, discharged 36.4 cubic miles. During this great eruption in 1815 the volcano lost over 4,000 feet in height and formed a crater seven miles ' across. The internal pressure causing this eruption has been estimated at nearly 25,000 tons per square inch. In comparison during the gi ant upheaval which occurred at Krakatoa approximately 4.3 square miles were ejected. But this certainly was the loudest noise of modern times. The ex plosion was heard four hours after it happened on Rodriguez island, 3,000 miles away as the "roar of heavy guns" and was" heard over about l13th of the earth's surface. This explosion it has been estimated had the im pact of at least 100 H-bomb test detonations. The "tidal" wave created by the explosion was 135 feet high anci was observed to travel across the ocean at a speed ex ceeding 460 miles an hour. As for the highest active vol cano today that honor goes to Mt. Antofalla, 19.921 feet, in the Puna Atacama region of the Andes range in Argentina, South America. Although no eruptions are known, Mt. Llullaillaco, at 21,719 feet, on the borders of Chile and Argentina, occasional ly emits gases. The lone active volcano in the U. S. is Mt. Lassen, 10,453 feet, in northern California, which after 200 years of quiescence sud denly went into a spectacular eruption in 1914 which lasted ' two years. It still pours out gases. Frequently volcanic explo sions are accompanied by earth quakes but not necessarily. The greatest earthquakes ever re corded (on the Gutenberg-Richter scale from 1-10) registered 8.6 twice. The first time during the Colombian earthquake of Jan. 31, 1906, and the more recent Assam earthquake of Aug. 15, 1950. Explanation of Scale As for this scale, one must re member that if a quake regis ters a 2 jolt, that means it was lj times stronger as one which registered 1. One which regis ters 3, is 10 times as strong as 2. A 4 jolt, is 100 times as strong as 2. A five jolt, 1,000 times as " strong as 2. The most extensive earth quakes ever recorded within the continental U.S. centered on New Madrid, Mo., in 1811-12. There were three particularly heavy quakes, the last, on Feb. 7. being the greatest. Tremors were felt from Canada to New j Orleans, an area of at least 2, 000.000 square miles. Fortunate ly the area was sparsely settled and loss of life was small. In contrast, the most disas trous earthquake, in North Amer- City Officials Will Give Driveway Plans Rockville, Md. The program was adopted be cause the public 'works depart ment was swamped with phone calls from citizens seeking ad vice on driveway construction and because many home-made driveways didn't pass inspection. With city help the homeownei . can build one of several types of driveway ranging in price from $75 to S150 about half the cost of a contractor-installed trip. Under the co-op plan the home owner excavates, places the forms, and pours and smooths the concrete. The city provides plans and instruction, breaks an open ing in the curb, and hauls away the old curb and excavated dirt. I About 130 residents signed up j for the deal three times as j many as the city expected. A' bank has offered to help home-j owners finance their driveways. Careful estimates place the number killed at about 700 and the damage caused by the tremors and ensuing fires at $140,000,000. States most free from earth quakes are North Dakota, West Virginia, and Wisconsin in which no locally centered earthquakes have been noted. My three sisters and I are very much concerned about our father, who was re cently married to a divorcee. Our mother died four years ago and we four girls saw to it that Dad was never lonely. We are all married and have chil dren and Dad was always with one of us. The children are simply crazy about him, as he is, or was, about them. Since his marriage, however, we have been seeing less and less of him. Of course, we ex pected this to some extent. But we feel it has been going too far for his own happiness. His wife has him on a merry-go-round of "going places and do ing things" and he really hasn't spent a quiet afternoon or eve ning with us since his marriage. He is like a puppet on her string. We feel that his wife doesn't like us, despite our best efforts to make her feel like one of the family. She has come between us and our father. Mr. F. D It's just not true about my wife coming between me and ray daughters. She is very fond of them and has had nothing but the nicest things to say about them and the chil dren. Nevertheless, she says she does feel like an outsider when she is among them. She admits they do everything possible to make her feel at home and yet, she says, she can't help feeling that they resent her. The truth is that I would like to spend a little more time with my daughters and grandchil dren, but my wife resists going to see them. (Sandy) O'Brien (above), fourth vice president of the Teamsters Union, will run against Dave Beck for union leadership when the Teamsters meet in Miami Sept. 30. The News said O'Brien would run on a "clean-up" ticket with her if I go myself, but I'm airaia ttus win make her un happy and she'll feel lonely. My wife has only one son liv ing in a different city, so she has had to occupy herself with different club activities and has gotten me interested in these things too. I guess she's not the family type. The Council: Despite good in tentions on both sides, a strong undercurrent of jealousy exists between Mr. F. D.'s daughters and their sJePmother. These women can disguise their feelings somewhat, but they can't entirely control them The daughters probably have been somewhat patronizing in their efforts to make their step mother 'feel like one of the family." She is sensitive to such undertones because she does, .in deed, feel left out of a very important area of her husband's life. It's no use trying to deny these feelings. It would be better to try to accept them and manage them. The daughters should rec ognize that their stepmother has a right to try to draw her hus band closer to her through inter ests outside the family life. This won t lessen their father's love for them or his grandchildren although it may mean that he'll see less of them. The stepmother's idea of en couraging Mr. F. D. to visit his family alone occasionally is probably a good idea for the present. In this way, there will be no unnecessary strain on the visits. When the daughters see that Dad hasn't been entirely taken away from them, they'll probably ease into a more nat ural and comfortable relation ship with his wife. It is only one of 19 casinos on the Mediterranean's Cote D'Azur. The total annual take of the 18 others is well over 10 mil lion dollars a year. Monte Car lo's figure apparently is a frac tion of that. Monaco officials will not dis close exactly how much money is spun away at their plush casino every year. Prince Rainier III prefers that they discuss his zoo, exotic garden and oceanographic museum and the lovely view from the ca sino's terrace. But the last available hint was given in a financial report issued for the benefit of tourists. The government said its total receipts in 1956 were $8,400,000 and that less than three per cent came from the casino. That would mean the government re ceived less, than $252,000 as its cuts from the gaming tables. French Claim In France, where casinos are run by the cities they are in and turn over about half their winnings to the government, the 14 largest had a total gross of nearly 10 million dollars. About five 'million dollars was left aft er taxes. The management of Nice's cavernous Palais Mediterranee, the largest gambling place on the Riviera, claimed that bet tors at Monte Carlo do not ante up anywhere near what they do in France. A Commerce Clearing House report said lawmakers of 12 states already have increased benefits and the prospects are for some 20 more states to take ac-. tion this year on proposals for boosting jobless paychecks. The largest increase was voted in Idaho, CCH said, where the weekly maximum jumped from $30 to $40. Nevada also raised its maximum from $30 to $37.50 for a worker without dependents and from $50 to $57.50 for a worker with four or more de pendents. Changes in other phases of un employment insurance have been enacted in 22 states this year,. CCH said. A Classy Place The guide books still mention the Monte Carlo's casino but they also list the other gambling places.
