Buried Treasure Hunter Wants Best Gun So He's Given a Purdey My favorite gunsmith, Tom, was busy with a customer. So I strolled over to the end of the next showcase and casually stud . ied the display. What I want is a double bar rel 12-gauge shotgun," the man said. "The best there is. Tom walked along the cases past the array of Winchesters, Lefevers and others to a special cabinet, but of used guns, from which he made a quick selec tion. "There you are," he said, handing it to the customer. "That's the one you want." "It's nice," the custome re plied, "but I'm afraid you don't quite get the idea. I want the best there is." "I heard you the first time, mister," Tom said. "And that's it, there." BLUISH TINT GIVES STAMP EXTRA VALUE When I walked into his office, Larry was studying a British stamp, a rose-colored, five-shilling item with a slightly bluish tint. It was uncancelled. He picked it up with a pair of tweezers and passed it to me, along with a magnifying glass. It was a square stamp, one with small letters in each corner and a circle in the middle, enclosing a portrait of Queen Victoria. "I know this is the issue of "1882-83, but I can't be sure what the color is. What does it look like to you?" ' I said I thought there was a bluish tint to it. Why? Had he sunk much money in it? "None, as a matter of fact," he said. "I just want to get as much out of it as I can. An old fellows brought it in here this morning, and I kind of took a shine to him." GLASS HATS AND SHOES MADE A-PLENTY LAST CENTURY Mr. Potter had just sold me his set of the ninth edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica at a price reasonable for each of ius, and now we were seated in his study smoking cigars. I looked about for an ashtray. "Here you are," he said. He snatched a receptacle from the mantelpiece and set it beside me on the table. . I say receptacle because it wasn't an ashtray, though it served as such. Instead, it was a glass hat. Why the glassmakers of the 19th century went in so heavily for making glass hats and shoes, I'll never know. Maybe there's some Freudian significance to it. But if so, it certainly was not evident in the bit of multicol ored glass Mr. Potter had brought out for my convenience. As I flicked an ash into it, I suddently realized that the hat wag one with a patriotic motif. While there were only ara besques about the brim, designs that held' no intelligible mean ing tor me, the crown was cov 23 MACHINERY t TRACTQRS FOUR 8 23x20 truck tires with tubes. And that's as good as new. It's only been fired a few hundred times, and all it'll cost you is $950." The price really set the cus tomer back on his heels. But as Tom explained that the gun was a Purdey, that the cheapest new one would cost him better than $1,000. plus the long delay while the British ' gunmakers got around to his order, I could feel the customer tugging at his pocketbook. "Since you guarantee its con dition, I'll take it," he said, staring at the small "J. Purdy & Sons" name plate. "Boy, won't the fellows be surprised when they hear about this." "Where did the old fellow get this" I asked. "Out of a stamp collection he inherited?" "No," Larry said, "he found it in a book. And he took the trouble to look the stamp up be fore he brought it in here. In fact, he knew all about its pos sible worth, when it has the bluish tint." "As is, this stamp catalogues at $175. I've agreed to sell it for him at 30 per cent commission. But he didn't seem too happy about it." "Well, you have the stamp, so why worry?" I said. "Because he's got a whole lot of other books to go through," Larry replied. "And if he finds any more, I'd hate to have him taking them anywhere else . . . Maybe I should do it for 20 per cent." ered with .facsimiles of the American flag. Very well done, too. Even though the colors weren't an exact duplicate of those in the Stars and Stripes, they were near enough. "How odd," I said, picking up the piece. "Why, it looks like copper wheel engraving." Clos er scrutiny showed that's what it was. Mr. Potter chuckled.' "Read the legend," he said. It was "Bryan and Free Silver." "J got it at a political meet ing," he continued. "I treasure it as a memento of the first time I heard and met the Great Com moner." "If you'd care to get rid of it," I said, "I might like to take it off your hands." "You can have it for $100," he replied. I declined.. Mr. Potter laughed. "Ive been offered $35, $50 and $80. Come to think of it, S100 is a little too close. I think I'll raise it next time to $125." MAY 20-26 The amazing wealth of natural resources with which America was endowed has seen tragic devastation in the three brief centuries during which we have occupied this land. One of the most challenging aspect of our national life today is the respon sibility for conserving what is left against exhaustion, and of restoring, so far as is possible, what has been destroyed. Stuart Chase presents a study of the great waste of our Amer icai. resources in his book "Rich Land, Poor Land," particularly as it pertains to our soils Because men do so destroy the soils they use, Paul Sears, in "Deserts on the March," shows us how the history of continents may be seen as a chronicle of deserts conquering over fertile lands. "The Soils That Support Us" is Charles Kellogg's explanation of the origin and formation of j soils, their, classifications and cnemical make-up, ana nis sug gestions for their conservation. Analyzing the scientific problem of land, of wastage, and the task of recovery is Russell Lord's "Behold Our Land," while "Our Plundered Planet," by Fairfield Osborn shows how man is de stroying his own life sources.
