A 32-year-old native of Brat tleboro, Vt., Johnson shut out the Dodgers for 2 13 innings Tuesday night to preserve the Braves' 3-2 victory and extend his string of scoreless innings against Brooklyn to 8 13. John son blanked the Dodgers with one hit for six innings on May 5 when he picked up his only vic tory of the current season. Phils Beat Redlegs The triumph over the Dodgers boosted the Braves into undis puted possession of the Jeague lead when the Philadelphia Phil lies ended the 'Cincinnati Red- Rain Washes Out Ducks Moscow, Idaho Ifl Rain Tuesday resulted in washing out the Oregon-Idaho Northern Div ision baseball series. Kansas City at New York, Chicago at Nats, Chisox Might Make Big Trade By UNITED PRESS Reports of an impending deal between the Chicago White Sox and the Washington Senators cropped up today as other ma jor league clubs sought to beat the midnight deadline on the 25 player limit. ' The Washington Post and Times Herald said the White Sox were seeking outfielder Roy Sievers and infielder Pete Run nels of the Senator's in exchange for outfielders Larry Doby and Jim Rivera and pitcher Bill Fischer. The deal was proposed by Chuck Comiskey, president of the White Sox, the paper said, adding that Chicago Manager AJ J Lopez definitely was interested in acquiring Sievers and Run nels. No Names Mentioned Lopez told the United Press, "We have been talking with the Nats since spring training to see if we can work out a deal that will improve both clubs." But he said he never mentioned any names because "it's not nice to mention names to other clubs." The White Sox, meanwhile got down to the 25-player limit by optioning pitcher Jim McDon ald to Indianapolis of the Ameri can association and handing out fielder Bob Kennedy his .out right release. The New York Giants acquir ed veteran pitcher Sandy Con suegra .from the Baltimere Or ioles for an estimated $15,000 Tuesday night. Fine Levied On Umpire Returned San Francisco (W Pacific Coast league President Leslie O'Connor announced Tuesday that Umpire John Nenezick has been fined $100 for filing an er-i roneous report on the ousting of a PCL manager from a game. O'Connor said Nenezich re ported that he ejected Manager Clay. Bryant of Los Angeles from a game' at Sacramento on April 23 for "abusive, insulting and very objectionable re marks." But he said the umpire admit ted later that he had not heard Bryant make the remarks and did not know that Bryant made them, but "merely surmized." O'Connor levied the fine against Bryant, but ordered it returned when it was revealed at a hearing that the remarks were made by an unnamed play er on the bench. In other actions O'Connor ruled that all PCL players must wear protective helmets when batting, and empowered ump ires to remove from a game any pitcher who deliberately throws a "bean ball" or attempts to "dust off" a batter. Wild Pitches Mar No-Hitter - Albany (IT) Albany high school pitcher Duan Spilde had a no-hit, no-run game going against Sweet Home Tuesday night with two men out and two strikes on the next batter in the bottom of the seventh, the final inning. One man was on base. Then Spilde threw three straight wild pitches. The run ner moved around to score. The next pitch was a strike. Albany won 4-1 and- Spilde at least still had a no-hitter. Angels Regain Front Spot in Coast Loop By DON THACKREY United Press Sports Writer The Los Angeles Angels proved to be Indian givers Tues day night, snatching the Pacific Coast league lead away from Hollywood before the Stars had a good chance to get used to it. The Angels did it by beating San Francisco 5-1 when Seattle was taking Hollywood 7-5 in a wild 10-inning contest. Other results were Vancouv er 3-2 over San Diego and Port land 4-1 over Sacramento. Losers Outhit Winners Oddly enough, all four of the losing teams outhit the winners, but as usual they paid off on runsi not hits. Los Angeles humiliated San Francisco by having two San Francisco products produce the win. Pitcher . Dick Hanlon kept his PCL record intact at 4-0 by scattering six hits among th2 Seals. Hanlon is a San Francisco boy as is Jim Baxes who clubbed a two-run homer in the opening inning for the only earned runs the Angels got. Los Angeles got only five hits but hung the defeat on Harry Dorish, first of four San Fran cisco pitchers. Hal Beven swung a mighty bat for Seattle in their battle with Hollywood. He clouted a home run in the seventh that helped the Rainiers tie the game and then whacked a double in the tenth as Seattle scored four times. They needed the runstoo as Hollywood came back with two in the bottom of the frame. Paul Pettit also homered for the Stars. Portland got only seven hits to nine for Sacramento, but three of the hits were home runs as Bob Thorpe scattered the Sac ramento blasts to get the win. NBC To Televise PCC Competition New York (IPI The National Broadcasting company an nounced today it will televise four football and 10 basketball games of the Pacific Coast con ference next fall and winter. The four regional football tele casts are set for Oct. 12, Oct. 26, Nov. 9 and Nov. 23. The games will be selected during the sea son as the conference race de velops. Coach Bob Livingston's Wolves finished the season with a 9-2 record, compared to 9-3 for Southern Oregon, 8-4 for Portland State, 2-10 for Oregon Tech and 1-10 for Eastern Ore gon. It was Portland State which downed the Wolves at Mon mouth Tuesday to throw a slight damper on the flag celebration. OCE meets University of Port land Wednesday and Thursday to wind up its season. Joe Giambra Scores TKO Over Vejar By SCOTT BAILLIE Oakland, Calif. HP) "Sure, we'd like to fight Kid Gavilan next. Joey probably would take him out after seven rounds, but the first would make money around here." Thus did Mike Scanlan, Joey Giambra's profit-minded mana ger, scan the field for his hand some middleweight contender who stopped Chico Vejar, Stam ford, Conn., in seven rounds Tuesday night. "Joey's ready for a title-bout he's right at his peak, but no body knows what'll happen until after the Robinson-Basilio fight" Scanlan said. Plenty Busy Giambra, sixth-ranked among the middleweight contenders, was kept plenty busy Tuesday night. Vejar always carried the fight to his taller opponent and constantly scored with lefts to the face but paid the price" by getting rocked with lightning one-two counters to his battered features. There were no knockdowns although Vejar slipped to the canvas late in the. third round after Giambra landed a left hook. Giambra, who weighed 160 to Vejar's 158V&, brought things to an end in the seventh round when he dfcve Vejar into the ropes with a stiff right to the head then battered Chico at will. Score Continues Good Progress Cleveland, Ohio (II) - The Cleveland Indians' injured southpaw ace Herb Score con tinued "slow, steady progress in the right direction," his doctors reported today, but said they have not been able to complete ly examine his injured right eye. Dr. Charles I. Thomas, the eye specialist who has treated the young hurler since he was struck down by a line drive May 7, hoped to complete his diagnosis, "before the week is out." "There was some change to day, but not too much. He is progressing well and we should get the answers to most of our questions soon," the doctors re ported. Vaughn was ranked only 10th among the 160-pounders by the National Boxing association, and he has an overall record of 32 wins, 13 losses and four draws, compared to Boyd's 42 victories and' only seven defeats. ' But 'Vaughn's most important fight was a "no contest" with Joey Giardello. Jaw Broken Boyd boasted a nine-fight winning streak and was on of the top three ranked middle weights until last Sept. 28 when, he met Giardello.
