In running up a massive 177 points in the District 6 A-l en gagement at the Medford sta dium, the Tornado thinclad con tingent sent four records into oblivion, tied another, catpured nine first places and qualified for 11 entries in Class A-l state title competition next week end at Oregon State college. Medford's fleet relay team, Lorin Christean, Mike Russell, Pete Kershaw and Wally Larson, with Neil Plumley in the shot put, Les Lingscheit in the half mile Larson in the hurdles had the starring roles. Grants Pass finished second with 131 V4 points. Klamath Falls totalled 56V, Crater 36 and Ash land 30. The Cavemen of GP picked up nine state meet berths, Klamath Falls four, Ashland three and Crater one. Relay la 1:29.7 The Tornado relayers and Plumley highlighted the meet. Medford's quartet reeled off the half-mile in a tremendous 1:29.7, which beat both the district and state narks. Those times-are both 1:31.2, which is 1.5 seconds over the scoring Medford per 'formance. The new district best compares to the best time in the nation this year, 1:28.1 by , Centennial of Compton, Calif. Plumley eclipsed the old dis trict mark in the shot put with a shove of 57 feet 11V4 inches. Later in exhibition he broke the 60-foot barrier for the first time in his career and possibly for the first time in Oregon prep rivalry. His distance was 60-2 and brought a mighty ovation from possibly the largest crowd He had another put of 59-6. State to witness a district meet here, record is 58-2Vi. Larson won both high and low hurdle events. His :19.3 in the preliminaries and :19.4 in the finals both bettered the old meet standard. State record is :19.3 The blonde rocket also tied the district best of :14.6 in the high sticks. Half Mile Record Lingscheit ran the half-mile in 2:008. to break-by .2 of a sec ond a record which had stood for 10 years. Jim Eausch, Ash land, barely beat out Bilbee lane, Medford, the 1956 state winer, for a state meet spot. But the gritty, hard-working Lane was real champ in defeat, running with a crippled foot and almost taking second. He was suffering from inflamed tendons and had not run for a week. Lane pulled ud to second position from mid way in the back but Busch nip ped him at the tape. Lorin Christean. alone with Larson, was a Medford double winner, claming both the 100 and 220-yard races. While Larson defends his low hurdle crown in the state meet next week end, Jerrv Close. Medford. will de fend in the broad jump. He took the district banner for the second year in the event. Mike Russell, Medford repeated as dis trict champion m the 440-yard run. Phil Paauin and Stan Lewman pole vaulted to a new record of 12-4 in. sharing one of the three first daces claimed oy Grants Pass. Mike Sparlin took third to eive the Cavemen a sweep of the top points. Boatman Victor Terrv Boatman rambled to first place in the mile for GP and Fred Thomas in the high jump took the other first for the Climate city. Larv Smith. Crater, won the hot battle for the javelin toga. His 189-5V4 was one of four over 180 feet. Glen Winningham, Grants Pass, hurled the Lance 188-3 3i to take a state qualify ing spot and spoil the hopes of Eldon Francis, Medford, Oregon titlist in 1955. Francis was third with 183-71. and Gary Smith, twin of Lary, fourth with 182-11. Jerry Stubblefield, Asmana, won the discus as expected Mprlfrirrl was one-two-three in the shot put with Murray second at 49-8 and Jim Funston nexi with 48-9 V. The Tornado had one second, tip for second, seven thirds. three fourths, two fifths and three sixths in powering over the opposition. Tt was a warm, sultry day but with no rain from threatening clouds. Gordon defeated Jim Norland, Klamaths Falls, 6-8, 6-3, 7-5 in the tough finals of the day long tourney on the senior high and McLoughlin Junior high courts here. Jim Hines and Don Finney, Klamaths Falls, copped the doubles diadem by tripping their schoolmates Julius Reynolds and John Bousquet 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in the other finale. Champions and runners-up in district play-offs qualify for the state meet. Netmen from Grants Pass, Ashland and Eagle Point also were entered in the District 4 tournament. First Round Byes Gordon drew a bye in the first round, subdued Ron Erickson, Grants Pss, 6-1, 6-0, in quarter finals and beat Gene Simmons, Klamath Falls 8-6, 7-5 in the semi. Norland also drew a pass in the first round and advance with wins of 6-2, 6-0, over Bob Medford if es Down Yreka In Baseball Tornado win-loss record in baseball so far this season was balanced out yesterday when Medford came through with its ninth victory, a 4 to 0 de cision over Yreka, Calif. The win evened the score for a setback at the opening of the season. Yreka won that game 4 to 3. Yesterday the Medfordites had only four hits to eight by the Miners. But they got the benefit of the breaks and Yreka errors. Larry Perkins tallied for Medford in the first inning on two errors. In the second Ron Peery walked and went to third on a ground out and wild pitch and scored on an error which let Ernie Tyler on base. Gordon Owsley's single and a Yreka miscue got Tyler to third and he got home on a wild pitch. KING TRIPLES Dennis King three-baggered and scored on a miscue in the sixth inning. Yreka muffed a scoring op portunity when a single by Culp and an error drove Al len in. But the Yrekan for got to tag the plate and was touched out. The Miners threatened with a single and double each in the second and sixth innings but Medford was able to retire the side with out damage. Tornado Tyler otherwise Scattered the Yreka hits. He fanned five, hit a batter and issued no bases on balls. Keyes of the Miners also whiffed five. He walked two. Owsley smacked a double as well as a single. Dick McLaughlin pounded the other Medford hit. Berryman, Eagle Point, and 6-0, 6-3 over Jerry Joy, Ashland. Both Klamath doubles duo had first round byes. Hines and Fin- nev defeated Joe Andrews and Art Garener, Eagle Point, 6-0, 6-0 and Hank Hampton ana ary Holman, Ashland, 6-1, 6-0. U.R) Uni versity of Oregon strengthened its hold on first place in the Northern Division baseball 'race by defeating Washington State, 11-8, here Friday. The Webfopts had to come from behind to pull the game out of the fire. Trailing, 3-1, at the end of three innings, Oregon scored two runs in the fourth, and went in front to stay with a four-run effort in the fifth. It was Oregon's eighth con ference victory in nine starts. Grants Pass Wins Frosh Cinder Mix Grants Pass Grants Pass roll ed up 144V4 points in 18 con tests Friday to win the annual freshman district school track meet in competition with five other schools on the Grants Pass field. McLoughlin Junior high of Medford was second with 118 V. and Crater took third with 75. Ashland piled up 62, Hedrick of Medford 38 and Klamath 35V4. GP thinclades colleted six first place ribbons and tie for another with McLoughlin which got four unshared first spots. Crater and Ashland each won three events and Hedrick one. Golfers of Medford high school took the Upstate tour nament at Albany Friday and Saturday finishing five strokes in front of Eugene which was leader after the first day - in the nine school field. Tornado linksmen had an aggregate of 389-380 769. Eu gene with a 386 total card on Friday had 774 for the two days. Coos Bay took third with 786. Other entries ware North and South Salem, Albany, Corrallis, Roitburg and Prine ville. WEBER MEDALIST Ron Weber, Prineyille stand out, was medalist with 74-71 145. Only four strokes sepa rated the highest and lowest Medford individual cards. Tom Hamlin led the Tornado with 78-73 151 and Stewart Schroeder stroked 76-77 153. Phil Mongrain had 76-78154; Dick Copple 80-75155 and Tony Monroe 78-77 155. 3 Smash 100 Targets In Trap Tournament Monte Irvin Quits Game Los Angeles (U.R) Monte Irvin, 39-year-old outfielder with the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast league, has an nounced his retirement brought about by a recurring back in jury. Irvin, who led the National league in runs batted in while playing with the New York Gi ants in 1951, disclosed Friday that "it will be better for all concerned if I retire." Doctors earlier had advised Irvin to quit baseball because of an old injury to his spine. He had a lifetime batting average of .307. RESULTS' High hurdles First heat. Willener won the extra shoot for the Class trophy and Clog ston was runner-up. Harold Woo- ley, Drain took Class B with 98 and Hugh McGinty, Medford, copped a shoot-off with E. E. Driscoll, Klamath Falls, in Class C after each had 97s. Bert Peck won Class D with 94. In the handicap Virgil Sanne' was victor with 97 and Willener runner-up with 96. Willener took the Chester Wood trophy by busting the first 50 straight tar gets. Harry Lupher, Drain, won Class I doubles with 48 and Ed Pease, Medford, Class II with 43. Mail Tribune trophy event this morning will lead off the sec ond and final day of the two- day tournament. $250 Handicap The 100-bird 16-yard contest will open at 9 a.m. It will be followed by the $250 Medford handicap, another 100-target event. Walter Fisher, Wedderburn, gained the big award in 1956 while George Jantzer, a twice winner of the major trophy, took the Mendenhall prize. There'll be trophies for high lady, high junior and high gun ner 70 years of age or over in this mornings opening event. Trophies will go to winners and runners-up in each class. The $250 Medford handicap is guaranteed. If there are more than 50 entries, additional plac es will be created so that surplus money will be added to the purse and distributed to the. shooters. Purse division is two groups 17 to 21 yards and-22 to 27 yards.
