Southern Oregon's glittering array of Class A-l high school track and field talent makes its final appearance in aggregate this season in its own area Sat urday in what could be the big gest record busting session in history for this district of the state. ' The five big schools of Dis trict 6 A-l send their athletes in quest of berth for the state championship meeting May 17 and 18 in Corvallis. Klamath Falls, Grants Pass, Crater, Ash land and host Medford are matched at the local prep sta dium. While state meet qualifi cation will be the main purpose, the district team championship will be another big issue. Preliminaires and finals ' in four field events and prelims in the 100 and 220-yard dashes and the hurdles are scheduled for morning. Events start at 10 a.m. Afternoon competition opens at 2:30 o'clock with the first of the races at 3 o'clock. There will be a charge for ad mission to afternoon contests. The meet is the last prep track affair at the Medford stadium this season. Stale TitliiU Four state champions will be bidding tomorrow for the priv ilege of returning to Corvallis to defend their laurels! They are Phil Paquin, Grants Pass pole vaulter, and. Jerry Close, broad jumper, Wally Larson, hurdler, and Bilbee Lane, half miler, all of Medford. Eldon Francis, Medford, Oregon jave line champ in 1955, will try against stiff opposition to re gain the district title and the state honors he lost last year. Given good weather and with it a fast track, chance that dis trict records will tumble is tre mendous. No less than six dis trict and five state marks have been bettered by A-l thinclads in this area. Top performances in some of the other events are close to district records. Paquin has beaten the state mark and he and his GP team mates, Stan Lewman and Mike Sparlin all have exceeded the district standard in the pole vault. Wally Larson, Medford, has better than state and district record times in the high and low hurdles. Neil Plumley, Medford, has exceeded the state and dis trict standards in the shot put. The Medford relay combine of Lorin Christean, Mike Russell, Pete Kershaw and Larson have a couple of record bettering runs. Lane has bettered the dis trict best in the 880-yard run. Ties State Record Christean has tied the state mark and come close to the dis trict records in the 100 and 220, Russell has pressed the standards in the quarter-mile. Close has threatened the boa jump mark, Lary Smith, Crater, the javelin record and Fred Thomas, Grants Pass,' the high jump standard of the district. It will be the final appearance on the local track of Medford high thinclads under the. inspir ation coaching and leadership of Bob Newland, who becomes vice principal at North Eugene High school next fall. The Black Tor nado' will be roaring to win not only the district crown but to qualify sufficiently strong to present Newland with an un precedented fifth consecutive state crown. Eyes of prep cinder followers elsewhere in Oregon will be on the meet since it involves the state champion and another of the state's strongest contenders. Medford is the favorite tomor row but Grants Pass possessed HJl SEEKS RETURN TRIP Jerry Close, above, who won the state A-l broad jump title for Medford last spring, will aim for a return berth in the Oregon prep meet when he competes at the Medford stadium Saturday in the District 6 elimina tions.
