CLYDE KELL Gold Hill Mayor Ernie Co oper presided at a meetinz of the Gold Hill city council Mon day. A resolution was passed by the council authorizing the city fire department to become a member of the proposed new Mu tual Assistance Agreement plan between various cities and fire districts in Jackson county. No objection was voiced against vacation of Fifth ave. ex tending east from First st. to State Highway 234. An o r d i ance was passed providing for the vacation of that section of street. City Super inlendent Floyd Taylor gave a report of the city work accompli: hed during April. This included grading of streets and alleys, clearing grass from city property, and saw ing wood. Naming Old Highway A letter wag read for the state highway commission stating that the commission would take up the matter of officially naming the old highway through Gold Hill as. business route 99. Due to request from citizens that the city remove trees from certain placet in the city along streets, the council's opinion is that the obligation to do so is that of the abutting property owners to remove such trees if the owner thinks the removal necessary. Major city work projects to be completed before July 1, if there are sufficient funds, were dis cussed and would include such jobs a replacement of the city water main from Fifth ave. north on First st. about 700 feet, in stallation of a new sewer main to serve part of Dekum addi tion and connect with the present main at Fourth ave. about 450 feet, the placing of oil matt pav ing, seal coats and lifts on var ious streets. The annual budget hearing will be held June 3 at 8:30 p.m. long with the regular council meeting at the city hall. ' Prince's Operation Starts Controversy Ubndon U.R) Eight-year-old Prince Charles licked happily at scoops of post-operative ice cream today unaware that having his tonsils and adenoids out may have started a national contro versy. Thursday's operation confined Prince Charles to bed in Buck ingham Palace and put him on an initial diet of ice cream. Outside the palace his ton sillectomy had another effect. Britain's press immediately raised the question: "Is this op eration really necessary?" With medical opinion divided on the question, the answer given by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh may set the pattern for many more Brit ish mothers, and fathers. For what the royal family does carries a great deal of weight with the average Briton.
