Newspaper Page TextJake LaMotta In Trouble on Track Charges Miami Beach (U.R) Former middleweight champion Jake LaMotta is in trouble again this time on traffic charges. The square-jawed pugilist was charged with failing to yield the right-of-way in a minor automo bile accident here Thursday when he swung his car in front of another auto while attempting to make a left turn. His pretty 18-year-old com panion, Renee Childrey, former ly of Philadelphia, suffered a bruised arm when she was thrown from LaMotta's big con vertible. LaMotta is currently fighting a conviction on charges that he permitted a 14-year-old prostitute to solicit her customers in his Miami Beach bar. He has appeal ed the six-month jail sentence and a S500 fine. ' He also faces additional prosti tution charges growing out of the same case next month. Shasta Takes Net Match Ashland Shasta Junior col lege defeated Southern Oregon college tennis team 4 to 3 on Thursday in matches at Redding, Calif. Hardrop Auto Racing Season Starts on Saturday Evening Roar of hardtop autos is a sign that summer is at least near at hand. A hint of the season was heard last week end in tune up runs. Now it is the eve of the 1957 opener for the motor jockeys in southern Oregon. The green flag will drop on Saturday, May 11, at the Valley View track near Ashland offi cially starting of another sum mer of competition there. And there's promises of a new look and faster speeds in autos as motor fans eagerly await the opening chase. Time trials are set for 7 p.m. tomorrow with the first race at 8 p.m. A standard hardtop pro gram has been scheduled by Track Manager Phil Bryant and ! the Southern Oregon Racing as sociation. Races are to include two trophy romps, three . heat runs and the semi-man and Main. Speedier Racing Lighter cars, bigger and faster motors and improvements of the Valley View oval are expected to make for speedier racing and more entertainment and excite ment for the onlookers. Most of the contestants of the local association are following the pattern with their cars of cutting away as much of the body as possible and making the autos as light as they can. A good number of the vehicles will be 600 to 700 pounds lighter. However, the Hawkinson Tire Tread vehicle, skippered by Bob Jenkins will be recognizable from last year. About the only change will be a different type of tire tread. Hawkinson's is to be trophy sponsor for the first night's rac ing. In addition to drawing the usual crowd of track regulars, the hardtop affair on Saturday is expected to bring1 in contend ers from other southern Oregon and northern California points. Coming from Klamath Falls will be Bud Cook, No. 1 driver there last year, Jack Bonham, No. 5, and Roy Brackman, Doc Catmull, Leonard Ferguson and Bennie Morrison. Two cars are anticipated from Project City, Calif., and entries from Rose burg are foreseen. A significant change in track regulations permits engines up to 280 cubic inches this year. This includes most of the 1956 motors and should make for fast er times. Work has been under way since February to make a fast smooth track. Racers last Sunday found a couple of rough spots but these were expected to -be 'smoothed for Saturday night. The grandstand at the track has been boxed in to shut out the cold evening air from spec tators. Bryant has reported that races at Valley View this year will be almost entirely hardtop. There may be a few stock contests. The track is nine miles from Medford and two miles from Ashland. It is east of Highway 99 in the Jackson Hot Springs area. Jack Burke, Furgol Lead Hot Springs, Ark. (U.R) Marty Furgol and Jackie Burke posted 68s Thursday to lead in the first round play of the $20, 000 Arlington Open golf tourna ment. . Furgol, from Lemont, 111., went out in 35 and got back in 33. Burke, hailing from Kiamesha Lake, N.Y., shot a 32 on his first nine and came back with 36. Ten players were bracketed for the second spot with 69s. They were Monty Sanders, Dal las; Frank Stranahan, Toledo, Ohio; Walker Inmore Jr., Bol ton, Miss.; Johnny Pott, Shreve port, La.; George Bayer, A. Bo Wininger, Odessa Tex.; Bill Cas per Jr. Bonita Calif.; Johnny Palmer Tulsa Okla. and Pete Mazur Tonawanda N.Y. There were seven with 70s and six with 71s. Ward Invited To USGA Session New York (U.R) The execu tive committee of the United States Golf association has in vited E. Harvie Ward of San Francisco to attend its June 7 meeting in Chicago for a discus sion of his amateur status. Ward, two-time U.S. national amateur champion, has been ac cused of accepting improper ex pense money by allowing his wealthy employer, Ed Lowery, to pay his expenses for the Cana dian and U.S. amateur tourna ments in 1954. The CSGA said Ward has ac cepted the invitation to come to Chicago and discuss the situation. During the course of an investi gation of Lowery's state income tax, it was charged that he paid Ward s expenses to two tourna ments. American cheese is the most popular variety in the United States. A U. S. Department of Agriculture report showed 974, 240,000 pounds of American cheese was produced in the Unit ed States in 1953, compared with 105.490,000 pounds of Swiss-type aiflf lifer ' ' , - v ' - " AWAIT SATURDAY HARDTOP RACES Bobby Wilcox, with M-3 above, and Doyce Lemley, beside his car below, are among the host drivers awaiting the opening of the Southern Oregon Racing association's hardtop auto racing season at Valley View track near Ashland this Saturday night. Wil cox hopes that, with his lighter car, he can improve on his third place finish in track points for 1956. Lemley will make his first official appearance as a hardtop skipper, having been strictly a stocker last year. He'll be contending against his brother Wayne, who was No. 2 driver in Valley View's final 1956 standings. The 21-year-old righthander was rookie of the year, broke the loop record by appearing in 70 games and made the All-Star team in 1956 while compiling a 12-4 record with many other games saved to his credit. But 1957 has been different. Anderson was judged the los er Thursday night as Los Ange les beat Portland 9-7 in a come back performance. It made An derson's record read 0-6. He pitched only two-thirds of an inning, walked four and was re sponsible for three runs. Electric Golf Cart Crushes Boy To Death Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (U.R) Fourteen-month-old Curtis Mi grate was crushed to death by an electric golf cart Thursday. The infant and his brother, Mark, 2V6, wtere playing with the golf car in a vacant store which their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Migrala, were inspecting. Mark, playing that he was driving the cart, accidently set it in motion and the vehicle crushed the tod dling Curtis, his father reported. (U.R) Some of the nation's best lady golfers resumed a futile chase for par over, a rugged mountain course today in the second round of the $7,500 Gatlinburg Women's Open. The 40-woman field, including 18 amateurs, failed to dent a demanding par 73 in Thursday's opening round and three players scrambled to the 18-hole lead with two-over 75s. Bracketed together at the first stop in the 72-hole grind were Marilyn Smith, Wichita, Kan., Vonnie Colby, Miami Beach, Fla., and Beverly Hanson, Indio, Calif., who missed a five-foot putt on the 18th green to boot a chance for lone supremacy.
