Mayo Foundation Is Cancer Ever Inherited? A woman tells me she blames her mother for having brought her into the world, and I think she is worng. This mother had a cancer, as did her b r o t her and sister. My cor r e s p ondent had a brother and sister die of cancer, and 1 J -. u x i c tnKxy sue Dr Alvarez has twice been operated on for cancer. Now she is afraid of getting- an other one. I do not blame her for being worried because she be longs to what is known as a "cancer family." Statistics show that there is some tendency for cancer to be inherited, but I doubt if this tendency is bad enough so that one need worry much about it. I am sure it is not bad enough so that because of it a person need give up a chance to marry. If I belonged to a cancer fam ily I would not worry, but i would go at least once a year ana get my lungs, stomach and bowel x-rayed, and my rectum looked into with a tigmed tuDe. Bursitis One of the common miseries of mankind is a pain in a bursa, what is a bursa? it is a iitue sac of fluid which sometimes serves as a sort of pulley or a cushion, as where a muscle runs over a bone. 'I he bursa that gives us the most trouble is tne one tnat lies under tne muscle that caps the shoulder. 1 just had trouole with one on the tip of my elbow. 'irst, it got pain ful, then it swelled up as big as a golf ball, and then, just as I was thinking oi going to a sur geon to have it cut out, it dis appeared! If I had taken some one's patent or home remedy or diet, i might have thought the result .miraculous. Occasionally, tne bursa under the cap of the shoulder becomes calcified or filled with lime salts, and then it can be seen with x-rays. Fifty years ago sur geons used to remove these cal cified bursas, but gradually tney discovered that often, with time, lie thing cleared up by itself. Cause Not Known Some will ask, why does a bursa give trouble? Vve do not know, it does not seem to be due to any infection. My hunch is that the changes in it are sim ilar and related to those in the joints of persons who suffer irom arthritis or fibrositis. A bursitis tends to quiet down, often without treatment, just as the attacks of arthritis tend to clear up. Somet i m e s bursitis does not give much trouble, and then again it can cause a lot of pain and can almost paralyze me arm. For weeks or months a woman will be unable to comb her hair. Sometimes the pain goes down the arm and up into the neck. Sometimes it is hard to say where it is orginating It might be originating in an arth ritis of the neck. What treatment is good? In many cases, when the disease is mild and the pain is not too dis abling, the main thing that the patient needs to do is to keep using the arm so that the joint will not become what we call frozen or full of adhesions. If the joint becomes stiff it may have to be manipulated under an anesthetic. Every day the per- DRY WRECK Old Lyme, Conn. Aspirin or aspirin plus codeine, may be needed to control the pain. Sometimes heat and mass age and diathermy will help. Fortun ately, in many cases the symp toms go away after a little while even without treatment. Some physicians today try cor tisone or the new cortisone-like drugs, but the use should not be kept up if they do not quickly give relief. T h e smallest pos sible dose that will give relief shou,ld be used. Better than cor tisone by mouth is likely to be hydrocortisone injected locally. It most cases of painful should er the treatment most likely to give good results is treatment with x-rays. This gives results in two out of three cases.
