Oakland Carmen Basilio, world welter weight boxing champion, apent part of today on Rogue river relaxing with a fishing line as he rested in preparation for his three-round exhibition match with Leo Owens at Hedrick Junior high school gym tonight. He is believed to be the only reigning champion ever to ply his trade in Medford. When Basilio and his en tourage stepped off a plane at Medford airport at 4:30 p.m. yesterday he was welcomed by Mayor John Sniedr, who asked him what, he would like to do today. Basilio summed his de sires up in two words: "Go fish ing." Members of the Jackson county chamber of commerce greeters committee were also on hand to extend an official welcome. Meanwhile, plans were com plete for tonight's program with the first match to start at 8:30 when Porky Jiminez, Klam ath Falls, steps into the ring against James Fisher, San Fran cisco. They are heavyweights The preliminary will send Kenny Dixon, Klamath Falls, making his first professional start, against Frank Coe, San Francisco. The six-round semi- wmdup will see Willard 'Batt ling Nelson, Portland, take on Joe Manual, Oakland, while Amos Lincoln, Portland, meets Bill Mathias, Oakland, in the 10-round main event. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Injury in Ring Results in Death Johannesburg, South Africa U.R) Boxer Jimmy Elliott's first knockout of his career resulted in his death. The South African middleweight died Sunday in a local hospital of a brain injury suffered in a title bout with Pat McAteer of England, British em pire middleweight champion, Saturday night.
