r randmother may have been a whiz at removing
ink spots with the milk-soaking method, but today's
new fabrics and inks call for these more scientific treat
ments. (The chemicals are available at drugstores.)
New luminescent permanent and washable inks: Rinse
the spot with clear water as soon as possible. For wash
able ink on washable fabric, wash in soapsuds and then,
if necessary, soak. Use a commercial detergent on non-

warm ethylene glycol or glycerine.
Treat permanent-ink stains with lemon juice (after
the preliminary rinse) and rinse again with water

for washable ink, and then repeat the lemon-juice ap
plication. Ball-point inks: Even though these stains are not sol
uble in water, they can be removed from almost all
fabrics except acetate rayon.
Place a pad of clean cotton cloth under the spot, and
apply carbon tetrachloride drop by drop, while rubbing
gently with a smooth metal or glass object (photo 3).
Change the position of the pad frequently, continuing
the treatment until no more ink appears on the pad.
Next, apply acetone in the same manner until the spot
is gone. Dry thoroughly.
Ink stains on skin: Wash with pumice-type soap. Rub
bing alcohol or lemon juice helps to remove stubborn
stains and spots.
Remember that it's best to treat any kind of ink spot
as quickly as possible, pre-testing the method in an
inconspicuous place on the garment to make sure it's
safe for the fabric Rinse thoroughly after the treatment
to remove chemicals which may harm the cloth.
