Nine years 'go this month the United Na tions carved the nation of Israel out of Palestine, and Jews the world over gave thanks that once again they had a homeland. The name Israel literally means "God strives," So far, it has been an up-hill fight against often discouraging odds. But the determined little nation thrives and grows stronger on adversity. Some call it morale. Israel's leaders have found an almost perfect formula for blending the pirit of its young people with the wisdom of its elders. Others call it the pioneer spir it. Some 900,000 persons have treamed into the nation from 11 parts of the world since Is rael was formed nine years ago after years and even centuries of Zionist efforts to provide a na tional home for the Jewish peo ple. Another 100,000 are expected this year, which will swell the population to about two million in an area the size of New Jers ey, although much of it is made up of barren, rocky hills and arid, unproductive desert. Israel's Goal Is Peace Shalom the Hebrew word for peace is used throughout the land for both "hello" and "good bye." Everyone from top govern ment officials to the man and woman trying to make a garden out of a rocky knoll contend that peace is their most desired and elusive goal. In fact, there has seldom been a moment of peace in Israel since it was born May 16, 1948. Its Arab neighbors observed the occasion by bombing the land from the air. The Arab armies, swelled by the ranks of Palestine refugees dispossessed from their home land closed in on Israel's borders and threatened full-scale war. Gradually, the Israelis pushed the Arabs back, but border clashes with Syria, Lebanon, Jor dan and Egypt continue to the present day. The Israeli education system is one of the finest anywhere in this part of the world, but every young man and woman in Israel must serve in the Army, Air Neuberger Suggests More Time Outdoors - ; Harper's .Ferry, W. Va. U.R) Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D Ore.) suggested Saturday night that congressmen follow the ex ample of President Eisenhower and spend more time outdoors ... He said congressmen and the country both would benefit if congress held some of its ses sions under the sky in a stadium or amphitheater during the spring. Neuberger said President Ei ' senhower "is outdoors a great - deal, either on the golf course or shooting birds." "Why shouldn't members of the Senate and House inhale some pure ozone once in a while?" he added. In a talk before a Hiking club here at the end of a 10-mile hike, Neuberger said senators on Capitol Hill live in a kind of. "a rabbit warren, and even must go through mole-like corri dors underground in passing from building to buildings." Department Agrees To Abolish 051 - Washington (U.R) The Commerce Department has 'agreed at least tentatively fto abolish its controversial O'- fice of Strategic Information. The agency has been under congressional fire for alleged ef forts to censor, non-secret in formation about the govern ment. Sen. Spessard L. Holland (D Fla.) and Rep. Dante B. Fascell (D-Fla.), announced Saturday as sistant Commerce Secretary George T. Moore has notified the Senate he will not ask at this time for restoration of funds for OSI eliminated from the Com merce budget earlier by. the House. ; Holland is chairman of a Sen- ate appropriations subcommittee . handling the Commerce funds. Fascell is a member of a House - Freedom of Information sub committee which has led the at tack on OSI. Committee Drafts Law tor Boating Washington U.R) The House Merchant Marine com mittee Saturday was drafting for early introduction legisla tion to tighten safety standards in the mushrooming pleasure boat field. Committee sources said it is hoped staff members can whip the proposal into shape to get it passed at least by the House before Congress adjourns. Sen ate action probably will be de layed until next year. The legislation grew out of long committee hearings into the rapid growth of pleasure boating since World War II. The committee took testimony ' of more than 300 witnesses from water skiers to operators of ocean liners on needed revis ion in the l?-yea-old motor boat act. With 25 million Americans annually taking to the water in one type of craft or another,' committee - .members concluded that immediate action is needed to bring federal and state laws up to date. ; mLQ w m Sunday, May S, 1957 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Force or Navy as soon as he leaves school. Israel Struck Back Israel's antagonoism with its Arab neighbors mounted rapidly when Egypt blocked Elath, its only port on the Gulf of Aqaba and in 1950 barred Israeli ship ping from the Suez Canal. Last October the little nation struck back with two lightning moves into Egypt's Sinai Penin sula and the Gaza strip.. ' It took considerable pressure from the United Nations to force Premier David Ben-Gurion to re call his efficient little Army, but by that time Israel had regained freedom of transit in the disput ed Aqaba Gulf and had wiped out strong Egyptian commando bases in the Gaza strip. The Israeli government now lists eight points it seems neces sary to assure peace in the area. First, it hopes its representa tives can sit down at the confer ence table with representatives of the Arab states to discuss all matters about which there are disputes. The Israelis say they are will ing to negotiate minor adjust ments at its borders as long as there are no major concessions of territory. The nation wants to benefit by its geopolitical position as the hub of Middle East communica tions, permitting the Arabs to establish land and air communi cations on the' north-south;, east west line across Israeli territory in return for similar concessions in the Arab nations. Seeks Cooperation Government leaders say they are willing to grant Jordan the free use of port facilities at Hai fa on the Mediterranean. Israel is willing to pay com pensation to Arab refugees while ruling out the return of these persons to their former homes. To do this,' government officials say they are willing to accept the offer of a loan from the United States. The country seeks cooperation with the Arabs on plans for shar ing the waters of the Jordan and Yarmuk rivers to irrigate the Ne gev Desert. And it is willing to maintain the present status of the divided city of Jerusalem, with Jordan holding the old city and Israel keeping possession of the mod ern . city- outside the ; ancient walls. "Peace between Israel and her neighbors is possible on the basis of equality and mutual benefit," Ben-Gurion r e c e n tly stated. Neither Israel - nor the Arab states should ' have to ask for concessions from the other party for peace because peace is its own reward." While pleading for peace on all sides, Israel continues to dig in for war. She hopes someday to be dug so deeply into the Mid dle East that no one can dislodge her. ... No More 'Quickie' Divorces in Florida Tallahassee, Fla. ' (U.R) From now on, it will take twice as long to get a "quickie" di vorce in Florida. Gov. Leroy Collins Fridav signed into law . his proposal setting a six-month resident re quirement before divorce pro ceedings can be filed in t h Sunshine state. Under the old law, only 90 days' residence was required. The measure is part -of the governor's program to end the state's reputation for handing out "quickie" divorces. Another part of the legislation has hit a snag. - -. It would .provide a. "cooling off period before divorces be come final. The House insists on a 30-day period and the Senate refuses to go . along with less than 60 days.
