To j show how un likely they are to catch- can cer I will say that, years ago, when I was a young man, I used to read of the great Chicago Dr Alvarez surgeon, Dr. Nicholas Senn, Vho at an oper ation on a patient with cancer would stick a little of the cancer tissue under the skin of his arm and leave it there. It did not grow. Recently, Drs. C. M. Southam, Alice E. Moore, and C. P. Rhoads, of New York, reported having transplanted bits of can cer under the skin of a number of persons who volunteered. First, they tried patients with cancer, and found that in some of them, the introduced cancer cells would grow. Apparently, the person had become so weak ened by cancer that his body could not kill off cancer cells anywhere in him. Then, with Charles Doan, Ri chard Brooks, John Porterfield and R. W. Alvis, the experimen ters performed the same experi ment on 14 healthy volunteers in the Ohio State penitentiary. Great credit goes to the prison ers who wanted to do something for humanity. Interestingly, their bodies strongly resisted the entrance of cancer, and soon de stroyed the cells that had been introduced. These experiments confirmed what has long been known, which is that the body of a man or woman with cancer is constantly fighting hard to kill the injurious cells. Some times the body wins out, and then the person recovers. A year or two ago, as I sat at a luncheon with Dr. George Crile Jr., I was pleased to hear him say that we physicians have come to worship too blindly the complete operation for' cancer of the breast. In many cases the surgeon should face the fact that since it is too late to cure with the knife, no operation should be performed. Now I find the same argument in a book on diseases of the breast written by another authority Professor D. C. Haag ensen, of Columbia university. rie tmnKs tnat wnen a cure is impossible, an operation can ev en be harmful. He feels that then the woman should be treat ed with irradiation alone (x-rays etc.). He does not operate when the patient comes with a breast that is tense and swollen and perhaps reddened, perhaps with cancer ous ulcers or nodules in the skin over the breast, or when the tu mor in the breast is fastened to the crest wall, or when large nodes can be felt in the arm pit, or when the arm is already swol len, or when the patient is suf fering from much pain in the back, due to scattered growths. Mayor ef Abilene, WMKEPr SECRET ?0R FtAR HTs WOULD I KIDICUltD -foDftY WINTER WHEW, Bicycle Rider Hit , By Car on Highway Edward Ray Foulon, 14, of 1310 East 10th st., Medford, re ceived minor injuries Friday night when he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle on Highway 99 near Bear Creek Orchards.s State police said Edward and another youth were riding side by side north on the highway about 11:47 p.m., when the car approached from the rear struck the side of Edward's bicycle. The boy was knocked into a ditch and - received ankle in juries. He was treated at Sacred Heart hospital and released that night. Driver of the car was iden tified as Mortimer Michael Mo Elligott, 45, of 519 King St., Medford. Officers said neither bicycle had tail lights or re flectors. McElligott told police he did not see the youths until he was a short distance from them and swerved to the . left in an effort to avoid hitting them. ' ' No citations were issued.
