Carmen Basilio To Arrive Sunday For Exhibition Bout af Hedrick Carmen Basilio, who appears to be in line ior a shot at Sugar Ray Robinson's middleweight championship in a July match which the "fight mob" predicts will draw a million dollar gate, heads into Medford Sunday for an exhibition match Monday night. Basilio, world welter weight champion, will box three rounds with Leo Owens, Boston middleweight, at Hedrick junior high school gym. With the champion when he lands at Medford airport will be his co-managers, Joey De John and Joe Netro, and Ba silio's young brother, Joey, who only recently made his profes sional debut and wants to fol low in the footsteps of his fa mous brother. Official Welcome Planned An official welcome awaits the welter king. He will be pre sented with a key to the city Swimming Class Offered to Men Beginning swimming instruc tion is being offered by the VMCA aquatic committee to any men who desire to enroll. The class will start Monday "'at 6 p.m. with Wilson Gilinsky as teacher. Basis for the instruc tion will be the American crawl stroke. Men interested should telephone the Y (SP 2-6295). The public also is invited to Basillio Anxious To Box Robinson In Title Scrap Portland (U.R) Welter weijjt champion Carmen Ba silio says he is ready to fight Sugar Ray Robinson for the middleweight title any time his manager lines up a match. Basilio flew into Portland last night from Chicago where he watched Robinson de throne middleweight king Gene Fullmer with a mighty left hook in the fifth round. Basilio will box a series of exhibitions in the Northwest. CONFIDENT The Welterweight champion said he is confident he can whip Robinson. "I intend to lick every fighter I meet," he said.': "If I can hit man I can hurt him. And. put this down, Robinson can be hit." v Basilio said he did not know Just when he would fight Rob inson. "Robinson's awfully tough to pin down, so we don't know yet whether it will be in July or September. James Fisher, 180, San Fran cisco, will open the card at 8:30 p.m. against an opponent who is to be signed over the week end. 10-Round Main Event Amos Lincoln 194, Portland, will go against Bill Mathias, 210, Oakland, in the 10-round main event. The fighters who are making the trip from the San Francisco bay area will be handled by Joe Mendonca, who is manager of Johnny Gonsalves, four ranking lightweight in the world. Tickets may be obtained at Lamport's, Brown's cafe and the Wooden Shoe in Medford and at the Greyhound Tavern in Ashland. They also will be-avau-able at the gymnasium Monday starting at 6:30 p.m. SPORTS TORNADO, TRACK, BASEBALL TEAMS GO TO KLAMATH FALLS SATURDAY representing Med-1 will choose from among Mickey . Athletes ford high school in .the two major spring sports will invade Klamath Falls Saturday. Black Tornado cindermen en gage the Pelicans in a dual track meet. Medford's baseball team will be guest of Klamath high for a doublebill, the first of the games counting in the Southern Oregon conference race. The track meet will bear no conference or district signifi cance but the opening diamond fray will find the Tornado glove and cleat men fighting to stay in the chase for the loop flag. Medford will still have a chance to knot for the baseball toga if it can gain revenge from the Pels for a loss in a previous conference brush. A loss would put the Tornado out of the running. The same goes for the i Pelicans? Klamath ilias a 2-3 loop record and Medford stands 1-3 Compared to the 5-0 mark of the loop-pacing Grants Pass Cavemen. Coach John Kovenz indicated that Dick McLaughlin, who has the best pitching record this season for Medford, is likely to get the mound call for the counter. Ernie Tyler will be on hand for relief, if needed, and If McLaughlin goes the route in the starter, Tyler may have the twirling chore in the kings-x second fracas. For the other positions Kovenz is expected to stick to his regular line-up. Klamath tutor Harry Russell Carney, Darryl Rusth and Blake Griggs for the hill duties. Black Tornado trackmen, un defeated this season, will be heavily favored to keep that status intact against the Peli cans who have not fared too well in the oval sport over the past few seasons. Coach Bob Newland has indicated that, his Medford charges are keen on im proving their times, heights and RV Softball Girls Drill This Sunday Eagle Point Coach Shy Cal- laghan has called the first prac tice for the Rogue Valley-girls softball "team. "The workout will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Eagle Point high field. , Callaghan said that all girls of the valley interested are in vitedjio try out for the team. . NorRschedule has been made for the club yet but eight to 10 games are to be arranged as "home" contests. Camp White Stadium will be the home field of the girls. ; " Last year Rogue Valley was fourth in the state tournament and ' took the sportsmanship trophy. . Dressen allegedly slapped the fine on the scrappy backstop when the two exchanged heated words in the dugout after Court ney was hit by a foul tip off the bat of Cleveland outfielder Bob Usher on Wednesday. The blow tore the nail off the little finger of Courtney's throw ing hand. According to Courtr ney, X-rays taken in Chicago Thursday showed the hand was broken. According to Dressen, the X-rays revealed a minor fracture of the little finger. More X-Rays "We sent Courtney back home for more X-rays just to be sure," Dressen said. "That's the way we operate." Both Dressen and Courtney said they'd just as soon forget their run-in ever occurred. - "I was mad because I hurt my hand," Courtney said. 'I muttered something in the aug out about how I only play once every four, five days and that one time I have to hurt my hand. Dressen heard me and made a comment. I guess after that one word just led to another." Dressen denied ever saying he planned to trade Courtney because of the incident. Chief Frosh Trip Phoenix Phoenix ' Rogue River high freshmen collected 10 clear cut first places and shared another Wednesday in a 75 , to 47 win over the Phoenix frosh. Gary Criss picked up two of the three unshared Phoenix firsts with :11.1 in the high hurdles and :18.9 in the lows. The other Pirate, lone winner was Rod Fowler with 3:52.5 in the three-fourths mile. . Jack Hoffbuhr, Phoenix, tied at 85 feet 11 inches with Doug Stew art, Rogue River. Stewart in addition won the shot put with 36-5 and the javelin with 138-8. Larry Goosey was another double victor for Rogue River with :08.9 in the 75-yard dash and :17.5 in the 150. Also for the Chiefs Ed John son won the 330 in :47.5 and tied with Art Johnson at 9 feet in the pole vault, Dave Carter won the high jump at 5-3, Bill Thompson took the broad jump at 16 feet and Neil Wagner was first in the 660 with :1 42. Rogue River captured the 440 relay with :53.2. Oregon Nine Risks Lead University of Oregon, Eugene Coach Don Kirsch's Oregon Ducks risk their Northern di vision baseball lead at Howe field today against the tough Washington Huskies. The clubs meet again Saturday. The Webfoots won five of their first six games and have begun to develop tougher hitting to go with a fine, pitching staff. The team is now batting over' .300 and the Webfoot hurlers have allowed only 14 earned runs in the first six games. Max Sur kont, 34-year-old veteran right hander, was sold by the New York Giants today to their Min neapolis farm club of the Amer ican association. Surkont had appeared in five games this season for the Giants, all in relief, and had suffered one defeat. He had allowed sev en runs in 6 13 innings. The stocky pitcher broke into the major leagues with the Chi cago White Sox in 1949, played with the Boston and Milawukee Braves from 1950 through 1953, with Pittsburgh in 1954 and 1955, and last year played with Pittsburgh, St. Louis and San Francisco of the Pacific Coast league before coming to the Giants.
