THE FOLKS IT HOME- West Side Pupils Participate in Experiment in Outdoor Education Ashland The children of the fifth and sixth grades of West Side school in Medford "re turned to their desks this week following a week of outdoor liv ing and learning experiences at a camp at Dead Indian Soda Springs. The pilot study, an experiment in outdoor education, and spon sored by Medford public schools and Southern Oregon college, was the first of its kind to be attempted in Oregon. Irene Hollenbeck, assistant professor of science at Southern Oregon college, was director of the camp and represented SOC. Representing the Medford school was Elliott Becken, as sistant superintendent. Class Outdoors All classes at the camp were held outdoors. Harold Thomas, district forest ranger, took the children into the forest to learn to identify trees, study their growth, and recognize damage done by fungi and insects. Safe ty measures to practice in the woods were taught, and each child had the opportunity to plant a ponderosa pine tree. Dr. Elmo Stevenson described to the children, from a point ov erlooking the valley of the south fork of Little Butte creek, the geologic story of the country. Austin Hamer, director of education and information of the Oregon State Game commis sion, took the children on two trips Wednesday. By studying the skeleton of a two-year-old deer, the children learned it had died of starvation in the pres ence of what appeared to- be plenty of food. He pointed out deer trails, browsing damage of deer, and other signs of the pres ence of the animals. At the end of the trip he dis played furs of several animals which might be found in the area. The afternoon was spent hiking along Little Butte creek looking for water life and the food that might be available to fish. Thursday Highlight The highlight of Thursday was a cook-out under the supervision of Miss Beverly Bennett, SOC. The children selected a fire site, collected wood, built the correct type of fire for cooking, and prepared their own lunch in small groups. Five counselors from the Southern Oregon college camp leadership class accompanied the children. They were, Lois May, Toby Fox, Nancy Shaver, Bob Ebert, and Jim Anders. Adults with the group were Donald Perry, classroom teach er of the children, Miss Beverly Bennett, and Miss Hollenbeck of SOC, and Burt Crary, the cook. Visitors to the camp were Lee Ragsdale, Medford public schools, a student -from Oregon State college, and two students from SOC. The children assisted in the planning, preparation of meals, housekeeping,- and wood supplies. Cuddle Kitten!
