Porfknders End Loss Streak; Stars Share Lead With LA Angels By DOV THACKREY United Press Sports Writer They opened the Pacific Coast league season in the Northwest ,. with the pitchers way ahead of "the batters. Most of them were already showered by the time the batters finished playing. In five games in the Pacific Northwest, including two day night split .doubleheaders, the fans got to see 28 pitchers. They also saw. 12 home runs. When the carnage was over it was the two teams that stayed in California that shared top spot in "the loop. Hollywood blanked Los Ange les 3-0 to have them move both teams to the top spot. Seattle was in a virtual Hie because of 6-4 and 6-1 victories over San Francisco both brough about by the big bat of Joe Taylor. Streak Over Sacramento beat Portland 3-0 oln the day game, but the Bea vers snapped a nine-game losing streak 6-4 in the nightcap before Gary Lewis Sets Record In Javelin Ashland A new school rec ord in the javelin was a high light for Southern Oregon col lege as Chico State college track- sters won from the Red Raiders 97 to 33 in a meet at Chico, Calif., yesterday. Gary Lewis, ex-Medford high, heaved the lance 192 .feet 5 inches. The throw also set a meet record. The Raiders got two other firsts and a tie for a win. Bill Hollingsworth vaulted 11 feet 8 inches, Dave Lockhard threw the discus 131-Vi and Karry Liv ingston tied with Weston of Chi co at 5-10 in the high jump. Tarrango won the 440-yard dash in :49.4 and the 220 ui :21.2 for Chico. Capello took the mile in 4:40.5 and the two-mile in 10:12.7. Weston won the 100 in :10, Schmid the high hurdles in :15.6 and Sheley ihe lows in :24.8. Bledsoe copped the 880 in 2:04.4. Buckman was shot put victor with 44-9 Vfc and Guild took the broad jump in 20-934. Chico claimed the relay in 3:24.3. Minor Loops Eye Pension Plan New York (U.R) . Minor league baseball players already have taken the first steps toward the creation . of a pension plan similar to the one now enjoyed by their big league brethren, the United Press learned today. Players with 10 years service in the minors, from Triple-A classifications all the way down to Class D, would be eligible for pension benefits, according to the plan. a couple of amazing crowds Vancouver broke all records for crowds but San Diego did the cashing in, 10-5. Curt Raydon limited Los An geles to four hits and R. C. Ste vens homered for the Stars as Hollywood avenged in part a disastrous earlier series with the Angels. Taylor had a fine day for him self with a three-run homey and another run batted in against San Francisco. Then he had an even bigger night with two hom ers good for five runs. That made it easy for Larry Jansen, who held the slipping Seals to six hits and kept them scoreless until the eighth. Cheer a Loser Portland, deeply mired in last place, drew more than 25,000 fans to see them play seventh place Sacramento in a two-for-the-price-of-two double header. In the afternoon game Roger Osenbaugh blanked the Beavers on four hits and Russ Rosburg and Ted Bell hit homers. In the nightcap Bell and Nippy Jones hit homers for the Sacs, but they could not match a homer by Frank Ernago and a pair by George Freese for the home towners. Earl Harrist was the victim and Bill Werle the victor in the second game although neither was around at the end.
