1 The Family Council Editor! note: The Family Council consist! of Judie, a pjychlatrtrt, tn'ee clergymen, a newspaper editor, a women', editor and two writers Eacn article is a summary of an actual report. The Family Counctl does not rive advice; It merely reports on problems that have been dealt witn by responsible aieneles and counselors. Edna C. My brother and sis ter should help support Mother. Francine G. Edna has always been a selfish person. Edna C. I am a career wo man in my mid-30s. I live with my mother and I have been sup porting her for years. I have a very good job and this support hasn't meant too much- to me until recently -when we've both had heavy medical bills. I feel that my brother and sister, who are both married and have large families, ought to make some contribution to Mother's support at this time. I thought it would be forthcom ing without my having to say anything about it. I waited, but nothing happened. Finally I spoke up and was surprised to be accused of selfishness and lack of understanding. I want to be fair. It's true that I' enjoy some luxuries that my brother and sister do not have, but I feel I am entitled to these because I work hard for them and do not have the family plea sures they enjoy. Francine G. Edna does not mention that her salary is quite a bit larger than our brother's or my husband's. We both have big families and we want to send at least some of our children to college. Edna has beautiful clothes, drives a terrific new car and tkes long travel vacations. Should our children have to suf fer so that she can enjoy things like that? My brother and I were shock ed at Edna's attitude. She seems to think she is entitled to live off the fat of the land. She has always been a selfish prson. In spite of her big income she al ways gives the children the most inexpensive gifts for their birth d a y s. You would think she would want to do things for her own nieces and nephews. My brother and I have decided to ignore the whole thing. Tht Council: Francine and her brother have evidently decided that the best defense for their shameful conduct is a brazen of fense. Shameful is the only word for this brother and sister, who have decided to burden one young wo man with the full responsibility for their mother. They seem to feel that Edna should be per fectly wiling to subsidize their children and that they have perfect right to "soak the rich" for the sake of their children. Edna is most definitely en titled to enjoy the pleasures that her good income can give her. What is more she needs them because, as she points out, she doesn't have "the family plea sures they enjoy." She must also make provision for her own old age and the possibilty of sick ness because she has no husband or children to fall back on. Edna has been most generous in footing the full responsibility all this time and has every right to expect some contribution from her brother and sister from now on. (Copyright 1957, General Features Corp.) On The Side By e. v. Durimg (Distributed by Krnjj Features Syndicate, Inc.) Do dogs care what they are named? I hope not. If so, con sider the feeling of the three Cairn terriers owned by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor who were named Pookie, Preezie and Detto. We have had many dogs. We always gave them reg ular nmes. The one female we had we called Hannah. The last three dogs we had were called Alexander, Robbie and Timmy. The names bestowed upon some thoroughbreds are outrageous. They border on cruelty to ani mals. As for example, take the horse named Frozen Pies. Con sider the filly humiliated with the name The Fat Lady. It is extremely interesting to note that practically no thoroughbred who became great has had a tricky name. So, perhaps a bad ly named horse broods over the situation and refuses to do his best. Asides Who is the liveliest octogen arian you know? On her 80th birthday Lady Mendl (Elsie de Wolfe) turned a cartwheel. Lady Mendl lived to be 92 years old London taxicab drivers get no salaries. Their income in derived from 37Vi per cent of amount on the meter, plus tips. Male and Female A female can add six inches to her height by featuring high heels. So, a young woman of five feet, two can become smart and impressive as a tall girl in appearance. A man can add to his stature with height building shoes. However, he can only make himself, appear two inches taller. Still if a fellow measuring five feet, seven had a girl fri end five feet, eight in height, he could become taller than she by wearing height builders. Then his girl could look up to be kissed good-night instead of having to reach down. That is, it she wore flat heeled shoes. That picturesque fellow Arthur Francis Loftus known as "The Singing Kid," was a follower of the horses for 50 years. When he passed on, he left an estate of S67,55lVSo not all horseplayers die broke. Only about 99 per cent of them. Flower Language Is lettuce a flower? It must be. It is included in-the official "Language of Flowers." It means "You are cold-hearted." So. young fellow, if some girl gives you the brush-off, send hr a head of lettuce. Speaking of the "Language of Flowers," do you know the message conveyed when a young woman is sent a bunch of daisies? It means: "I won't tell." Well Dressed Men For warmth the fancy vest should be revived. A sweater, worn with a business suit, has a tendency to make a man ap pear elderly and in need of extra protection from the weather. A brightly colored vest, or waist c o a t as we say in Brooklyn, gives a man a youthful appear ance. Makes him look like a lively fellow. Also improves his standing as a well dressed man. Physicians It is repeatedly claimed physi cians seldom live to be over 80 years old. There has been one notable exception. H i ppocrates. "the father of medicine," lived to be 109 in a period when the average life expectancy was 32 years.
