CLYDE KELL Gold Hill According to Gil bert Mack, principal of the Gold Hill school, three new teachers have been hired to teach at the Hanby school next year. Russell Carr of Spokane, Washington will teach the eighth grade, Mrs. Barbara Charles of Canyonvillp, Ore., will teach a fourth grade class and Claude Morgan will teach a fifth grade class and will also be the junior varsity coach next year. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan live at 914 West Fourth st. in Medford. George McKnight of Highway 69 North received word recent ly that his sister had died in Lincoln, Nebraska. teers responding to the alarm were Virgle Gribble, Ernie Cooper, Vaughn Whitmore, cap tain, Cecil Gabie, Delos Walker, Jack Arnold, and fire chief, ! Clyde Kell. These men were as sisted by other local men. This was the second house fire within a week in Gold Hill. A serious house fire occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Maerz on April . 14. According to local firemen, Arty Laws and Lenard Goosie, who are employ ed by Copco, were called from Rogue River to disconnect the electric wiring during the fire at Elberts. Gilbert Mack of Sams Valley was notified of the death of his mother, Mrs. Edith M. Mack of Salem, Ore., on Saturday, April 13. Mr. and Mrs. Mack, accom panied by their sons, Herschel and David, went north for the funeral, which was held at For est Grove. They were gone two days. Representatives from the Bell phone company planned to come to the Hanby school Friday, April 28 at 9:30 a.m. to explain to students of the Patrick and Hanby schools the proper pro cedure for using the new direct dial system going into effect on April 27. The band from the Rogue Riv er school presented a program Thursday, April 25, at 9:30 a.m. at the Hanby school. Mrs. Cecil Smith from Eu gene, Ore., spent a few days recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Smith of Sardine creek. Mrs. Smith also visited Fitch Snider of Fourth avenue while she was in this commu nity. Nearly 200 people, including parents, friends and children of the Sunday school, were pres ent for the Easter program which was presented by young sters at the Community Method ist church under the direction f Mrs. James Coward. Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Jones went to Yamhill, Ore., Friday, April 19, where they spent the Easter week end at the home of their (laughter. Mama. Mrs. Deets teaches homemaking at Yam Bill Union High school. The Junes' son and daughter-in-law, tBr. and Mrs. Wendal Jones, and three children Linda, Steven and Sandra of Detroit, Ore., spent a&aater Sunday in Yamhill with Urn iamily. Wendal is employed 36y the U.S. Forest Service at Detroit. Volun- Mr. and Mrs. Milton Stein metz of First avenue went to Portland April 15, where they visited their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. David Steinmetz and children, John, Robert, and Mary Beth. They returned Thursday, April 18. Milton Steinmetz returned to his job in Santa Ana, Calif., April 22, after a ten day vacation with his family. Mrs. M. L. Cooper of Weed, Calif., is reported to be quite ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Milton Steinmetz. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Bradley have returned to their home in Fallon, Nev., following a two week vacation at the home of her mother, Mrs. Iva Lentz. Mrs. Bradley is the former teona Lentz. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Anderson have returned to their home in Idaho after spending a week in Gold Hill looking after their property. The Andersons are the owners of the house where Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Maerz were liv ing, on the corner of Third street and First avenue. The house was damaged by fire re cently. The Andersons are for mer residents of Gold Hill and he was employed as city mar shal several years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley . Newn ham are the parents of a baby girl born Friday afternoon, April 20. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and has been named Cynthia Dawn. Consecration Service Slated for Klomhaus' Consecration services for Dr. and Mrs. A. P. Klomhaus of Rogue River will be held at 7 p.m. today at St. Peter Evangel ical Lutheran church, 1020 East Main st. The Klomhauses will sail from San Francisco May 10 for New Guinea where they will serve as medical missionaries for the Lutheran church, Missouri Sy nod. Following the service tonight a reception will be held for them at the church. Mrs. Kfomhaus re signed from the Jackson County Public Welfare commission this month. She had been a member of the commission for more than five years. Sir Francis Drake destroyed the Spanish Armada near the French port of Gravelines on Aug. 8, 1588. ROGUE RIVER Hobby Club Meeting Held By MRS. MYRTLE WHIPPLE Rogue River The Rogue River Hobby club met Tuesday, April 23, at the home of Mrs. James Whipple at 212 Cedar street with 10 members and one visitor present. The visitor was Mrs. Roscoe St. John, who was at one time a member of the club. Luncheon was served at 12:30, after which hobby gifts were exchanged. A new member, Mrs. Iza For syth, brings the number in the club back to 12. The afternoon was spent visiting and some doing fancy work. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Richard Har gitt. David Hemmitt and his wife and baby are visting Hemmitt's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orrin Hemmitt and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Christenson. Da vid attended school here before going into the service. Mrs. Tony Zahart and four children of Menlo Park, Calif., spent Easter vacation with her parents, " Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hilger. Whiles he was here the Hil gers held a family reunion and had as guests Mr. and Mrs. Gene Hilger, Mr. and Mrs. Orin Hil ger and children, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Hilger and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Wallace, Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Thompson and children, all of Rogue River, and Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Hilger of Cave Junc tion. Also present were Mrs. Inis Gclvin and Dave Dairy. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Carroll have moved to Areata, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown and d-ughter, Audry, returned recently from a two-weeks' va cation through California, Arizo na and Utah. They made stops at Hoover dam, Death Valley, Bry:e Canyon and San Francisco. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Sullivan of Long Beach, Calif., were recent visitors of the Earl Green fam ily on Cedar street. Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe St. John are business visitors in Rogue River from The Dalles, Ore. Mrs. Ethel Waresback and daughter were weekend visitors from Klamath Falls at the Tom Wilson home. Phil Strahan and Mrs. Belle Harte were dinner guests Easter Sunday at the home of Phil's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Clair Mathews of Ashland. The sunrise service held at the Assembly of God church was well attended. The Rev. Barnett gave the message. The people then went to the fellowship hall where the Mariners club served breakfast. Two services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday, one at 9:30 a.m. and one at 11:00 ajn. Both services were well attended. Mrs. Lois Morgan just re turned from Bishop, Calif., where she visited her son Fred and family. . Roscoe Hargitt who is In a veterans hospital in Tacoma, Wash., was a weekend visitor with his wife and baby and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hargitt. Queen to Receive Bid to Festival, Neuberger Says Ashland Queen Elizabeth of England and her husband Prince Philip, will be invited to the Ashland Shakespearean festival if they visit the United States this summer. The assurance that the British government would be notified of the invitation has been re ceived by Sen. Richard Neuber ger (D.-Ore.) from Robert C. Hill, assistant secretary of state, along with an endorsement of the invitation. Replying to the Oregon sena tor, Hill noted that the '"invita tion to Her Majesty and His Royal Highness has not been of ficially extended," and that "no time has been set for the visit." Many Inritaiions Hill added that because of the number of invitations already extended the queen it would be impossible for "Her Majesty" to fulfill them all. "However, every possible con sideration will be given to in clude the Oregon Shakespearean festival if the tour materializes," Hill said. CLUB NEWS South Weil Sewing Club South West Sewing club held their eighth meeting at the home of Mrs. P. Strom. We discussed a shopping tour to Eugene. We plan to go May 11. Our leader explained the contests we could enter at the fair. Next meeting will be May 4, 1957 at Stroms. Ann Darland Reporter Central Point Bef Club The Central Point Beef club held its last meeting at the home of Nicki Hammond. Three of the members from our club went to the Cow Pal ace. They ate Dale Smith, Susan Wright and Carol von der Hel len. Carol and Susan gave a re port on the Cow Palace. Some of .the members wanted to make rope halters, so our leader, Fldyd Charley, demon strated how to make them. The Central Point livestock clubs will go on a livestock judging tour on Saturday, May 4. All members will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Lathrops to start the judging. We will go to dif ferent farms in the valley to judge the animals. The next meeting will be held at Monty Oaks home on May 2. The meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served. CAVIN Hilts Mrs. Charles Goddard, leader of Girl Scout Troop 222 ?nd Scouts Marcia Cavin, Pam ela Mendes, Judith Rife, Karen Bryan, Katie Sandiford . and Nancy Johnson took a six mile hike on the logging road west of Hilts Wednesday afternoon. A party was given for Delores Luper by her mother, Mrs. Gil bert Luper on Saturday, April 1 3, in honor of her seventh birthday. Games were played and movies of the Sacramento and San Francisco zoos were shown. Cake and ice cream were served to Linda Fremd, Gayel Ward, Yvonne Van De Weghe, Clara Williams, Mary Rogers, and Den nis Luper. Unable to attend but sending a gift was Judith Fremd. Intermediate GirJ Scout Troop 224 and leader, Mrs. Donivan Ward entertained Mrs. Gilbert Luper's and Mrs. Robert Fremd's Brownie Scout troops with an Easter egg hunt and party on Friday afternoon in the grove near the community center. . Prizes were awarded, for find ing the most eggs, to Barbara De Clerck, and for finding the least eggs to Sherrie Staley. Specially marked prize eggs were found by m Carleen De Clerck, Shirley Staley and Paula Eastman. Others attending were Louise Johnson, Janet Cavin, Cathy Wittaker, Helen Sheppard, Linda Zanotto, Delores Luper, and Clara Williams. Girl Scouts acting as hostesses vere Lee Roy Green, Gayel Ward, Marilyn Thompson, Jeri Lynn Green and Marsha Sim-men. The Bridge club met Thurs day afternoon at the home of Mrs. Al Simmen. Attending were Mrs. M. Robinson, who received high prize, Mrs. William Wiley, Mrs. Frank Graves, Mrs. Art Blanchard, Mrs. M. G. King, Mrs. Ernest Spannaus and Mrs. Mrs. Fred Haynes. Investiture for Brownie Troop 223 was held on Tuesday, April 16, at the home of troop leader Mrs. Gilbert Luper. Receiving pins were Carleen De Clerck, Janet Cavin, Helen Sheppard, Cathy Wittaker, Clara Williams, and Linda Zanotta. Gayel Gould was absent due to illness. Re freshments were served at the close of the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. E. Spannaus drove to Mt. Shasta Thursday evening to meet heir grandson, Terry McFerrin, of Redding, who was their guest for the remaind er of the week. . . Mr. and Mrs. Harold McFerrin arrived on the week end to join their son as guests of the Span naus family. They returned home Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Watts, daughter June and Louis Davis of Chico, arrived Friday night l at the home, of Mrs. Watt's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wil liams. On Saturday they drove to Medford, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Williams, to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Rushton and family. Mrs. Rush ton and Mrs. Watts are sisters. They returned to their home in Chico, Sunday. Approximately 90 children ., Mr. and Mrs. Ted Ross and family of Hawthorne. Calif., are visiting in Rogue River. An Easter egg hunt was held on Sunday afternoon for the Local Red Cross Chapter The Jackson county Red Cross chapter has reported an imme diate need for a full ize crib and high chair to be given to a local family. Red Cros officials said the growth of an 8-month-old child is being hampered because the child is still having to sleep in children of the community by the Hilts voluntary fire department.
