wried Treasure Colt Gun Can Anywhere in The value of the Colt revolver was so quickly and universally recognized back in the 1350s that even the Turkish govern ment ordered them for its navy. Hence one is likely to run into them anywhere in the world. And yet, for me, it is always something of a shock to run into an old one outside of the United States. Even in Mexico. A case in point is one that oc curred at a small cantina near La Paz, in Baja, Calif. A Mexi can rancher had a six-gun on his hip that immediately caught my eye. The ivory grips sticking out of the holster were ornated with tlie beautiful eagle and serpent f Mexico done in an Inlay of He was quite happy to exhibit ie weapon. It was a .36 calibre, angle action gun with a seven-and-a-half inch, octagonal bar rel. A cap-and-ball heater with an engraving of a sea fight cap tioned "Engaged 16 May, 1843." Colonists Revenue Stamp No Cause The yellowed piece of paper Charles was examining mea sured about nine by six inches. It was a bill of lading made out for some furniture that had been shipped from London to Boston in the year 1756, 20 years before the American Revolu tion. "It's a particularly good ex ample of the stamp," said Charles, pointing to what looked like a modern corporation seal in the low righthand corner of the document. He was quite right. The stamp .was a clear embossment of the paper. So clear that it made me suspicious. The ink of the writ ing had faded to a brown that was not so very easily distin guishable from the paper. One would think that in the course of two centuries the embossment would have flattened out con siderably, too. I said so. Charles shook his head. "An embossment is actually a break ing of the paper tissues," he said. "They can't go back together again. And besides, I have al ready checked with an authen tic copy and it stands up." The design of the stamp con sisted of a circle around the out A'most Any Si?all. Covered Wooden Box Has Some Value Almost any kind of a well made, small, covered wooden box whether or not with draws in it, but in good condition, is bound to have some value. And many of them have considerable value. One reason is that they are convenient for storing things. But more important, though less obvious, is that they have long been regarded so. And therefore, if you happen to come across an old one, it is well to know that you may have found a rare and valuable antique. A discovery of that kind may take place anywhere. A musician I know wanted a box for storing sheet music. But he didn't want just any old box. He wanted it to be sturdy, of dark wood and cheap in price. It took three or four months before he found what he wanted, and when he did, its cost was only 52. The bcx was shallow, strong, of dark brown wood, and it measured 26 inches by 14 by 5. Though strongly and even solidly constructed, the box was rather light in weight. For one thing, there weren't any nails in 23 MACHINERY and TRACTORS EARTHM ASTER tractor with plow, mower and disc. Or.jon Be Found the World The barrel was also marked "Address Col. Sam'l Colt, New York, U. S. America." But other than the engraving which looked surprisingly fresh, by the way and the gold and ivory grips, there was no ornamentation. The trigger guard, for example, which is usually dressed up on a presenta tion piece, was of simple brass without a suggestion of engrav ing. Evidently the weapon was just a stock model whose owner had decided to change the grips 'for some reason. I asked its owner, a Sr. Man uel Ortiz, if that were so. He laughed. He had inherited the revolver from his father. It had saved his life ten years before he wouldn't say how and so he had the grips made, out of grati tude, by a Mexico City artist. "I used to be offered any where from S150 to $300," he said, "but since I put the grips on, at a cost of about $250 in your money, I've been offered as high as $1000. for a Revolution Now er edge of which were the words STAPLE OF THE MASSACHU SETTS. Inside the circle was the replica of a codfish above the legend II PENCE. "It would be easy to counter feit," I said. "But not worth it," Charles replied. "This is the kind of a revenue stamp the colonists eventually revolted about. You know taxation without represen tation. And though they are getting more valuable, this isn't worth but $10, and it's one of the best." "Why are you so Interested then?" I asked. "Why did you bother to buy it?" Charles grinned. "That's what I was wondering myself. I gave the full catalogue value of $10 for it. As an act of charity. But it occurs to me now that there might be some descendants of the Fletcher to whom the bill of lading is made out. Maybe they might want it.'' -" 'It 'took him about 15 letters over a three-month period, plus two trips to a genealogical so ciety to prove his hunch was right.' The bill of lading finally brought him $125. it For another, there was con siderable carving around the sides and on the top, which had lightened the piece without de tracting from its strength. The designs were simple, not ornate at all, which is one rea son, probably, why the piece went at its ridiculously low price. They consisted merely of a series of mayflowers about the sides, and a single draped garland of arbutus across the top. In fact, the carving was so un obtrusively done that my mus ician friend had had the piece for a coupe of months -before he discovered that in each of four well separated blossoms along the front was a numeral. They were 1, 7, 4, 3, in that order. v The date was not conclusive evidence of age, of course, but it was in keeping with the gen eral tone of the piece. At least, some one else thought so. For within a year my friend was finally tempted to part with the box, overwhelmed by an offer of $250. Most of them come from the crowded refugee camps of Am man, Jericho and J e r usalem, where nearly 500,000 homeless victims of the 1948 Palestine war live in bitterness and hatred. They are the "angry young men" of the Middle East. - At the clink of a coin they will come pouring out of the ramshackle camps where they live on 9 cents worth of food a day to riot, pillage and burn for anyone who pays them. Power Behind Movement Today they are the power behind the powerful nationalist movement in Jordan which wants to curb the power of the king and align Jordan with Egypt and Syria in a "neutra list," anti-Western federation. The last time they came out in force was on Jan. 7, 1956, when approximately 5,000, in cluding school children, poured into Amman's streets to demon strate against the proposal that Jordan should join the Bagh dad Pact. The last foray caused the downfall of the Jordan govern ment, a general strike, and. the burning of a U.S. embassy car and U.S. mission offices. -Vails of Jericho In Jericho, they burned United Nations relief offices and had to be put down by troops. - Martial law and a curfew were imposed in Amman, but-Jordan stayed out of the Baghdad Pact. After the January riots the U.S. embassy, which stands on a hill overlooking the city, began erecting a high wall to protect it from flying rocks and bullets.
