It is "It's Time You Knew," by Gladys D. Shultz (Lippin cott). She gets right down to brass tacks, and pulls few punches, and yet she says it in a dignified Alvarez way which should be acceptable to all mothers. Actually, many mothers can profit from reading the book. As Dr. Somers H. Sturgis says so wisely in the introduction, ''education and in formation can do most to pro tect a girl." I am always a bit amused at the mother who thinks that if her daughter gets home always by ten o'clock her virtue is safe as if she couldn't get 'into mis chief long before ten! A New Drug for Tuberculosis Drs. Paul Siminoff, Robert M. NEW SUPERVISOR Donald L. Arant has been appointed super visor for the Willamette agency office in Medford of Standard Insurance company. Announce-' ment of the appointment was made by Edwin A. Phillips, vice president and agency director at Standard's home office in , Portland. He has been active in various Medford organizations and is the 1957 president of the Rogue Valley Life Underwrit ers association. Frank Martin Named Chapter President Frank G. Martin, of the Olson Ross Lumber company, Medford, was elected president of the Medford chapter of the National Manager's associaion at a recent meeting. Other officers elected were Jack M. Portland (U.R) - Twenty-four previously-unreported cases of tuberculosis have been found thus far as a result of a recent mass chest x-ray survey conduct ed in the lower west side district of Portland, the State Board of Health said. Mayo Clime Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation Smith, Walter T. Sokolski and George M. Savage reported a new antibiotic scientifically known as streptovaricin which ii laboratory tests, is 10 times as active as streptomycin and 100 times as active as para aminosalicylic acid (PAS). How ever, it is not as active as is an other widely-used anti-tubercular drug called isoniazid. Drs. L. E. Rhuland and Kurt F. Stern tested the drug on two highly virulent strains of the tuberculosis organism in mice and found it gave 10 per cent protection to the little animals. Other physicians who have worked with the drug have been pleased with it. Unfortunately, as of now, we do not know whether the drug will work on men and women with tubercu losis as well as it does oa tuber cie bacilli in the test tube, and in mice. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for information or to attempt to diagnose by mail.
