It was the third straight loss for the Cougars since they began defense of their Northern division tittle. ' The Beavers " tagged Cougar pitcher Roy Davis for 14 hits including a triple and a dou ble by sophomore outfielder Kim Bradshaw and three singles by Tom Hunt. The winning pitcher Syl Johnson allowed the visit ors only four hits. Brief Cougar Lead The Cougars had a brief lead when Maury Winter singled home Ron Hare from second in the third inning but the Beavers made three runs on three hits in the same inning. The Beavers after one run in the fourth inning exploded in the seventh with five tallies for ix safe hits. To clinch the game they made three more on three hits in the next inning after Cougar Floyd Damon doubled home Winter from second. Talent was alone in third place after another Friday win. The Bulldogs outscored St. Mary's of Medford 9 to 6. In a Thursday fray Butte Falls ce mented its grip on second spot by whipping Rogue River 17 to Vannice threw a one-hitter for Prospect against Jackson ville. He struck out 13 batters and walked three. The Cougars combined a safe ty by Dave Gardner, a double by Mickey Ring, a walk and a groundout by Vannice for two runs in the first inning. The other marker was ' in the fifth inning when Gardner singled Villanova is Penn Relay Triple Winner Philadelphia (U.R) Villan ova university, with Olympic 400 meter champion Charley Jenkins pouring on the coal in a 46.4 anchor leg, raced from behind Saturday to take the clas sic mile by two yards and be come a triple winner in the Penn relays. The Wildcats of Jim Elliott, already victor in the sprint med ley and the distance medley, chalked up the big win in 3:12.7 when Jenkins overcame a three yard deficit, fought off terrific challenges by Texas and Mor gan state, and then whipped un der the wire ahead of Eddie Southern, the Longhorn anchor man, the Texan was a wisp ahead of Morgan State's Bob McMurray, who was clocked in 45.9. , It was the race of a meet that saw six major records and 13 of a minor nature sef, and blos somed into a natural when Tex as, Villanova and Manhattan, each in the double-winner class, went gunning for the triple crown. Villanova had salted away the sprint and distance medleys; Texas, in its first appearance at the. relays since 1936, equaled the meet records in winning the 440 and 880 relays, and Man hattan, shut out last year, was the winner in the two-mile and four-mile. Washington Clubs Idaho Seattle (U.R) The Washing ton Huskies took advantage of loose Idaho fielding Friday to rack up a 5-0 victory over the Vandals in a Northern Division baseball game. The Huskies got only two hits one a fourth inning homer by Monte Geiger off Doug Ran dall but they capitalized on four Vandal boots to score four un earned runs. The scores came in on six hits, two errors and a base on balls. Bill Irwin, Don Hawkins and Don Ellis each got two doubles for Butte Falls. Kid Bassey Fight Victor Washington (U.R) Hogan Kid Bassey's manager threaten ed to return to England "unless we can sign up a featherweight title fight within two or three days." Manager George Biddle made the statement following the dazzling American debut Friday night of the powerfully-built Bassey, British Empire champion from Nigeria, Africa. Bassey overwhelmed Miguel Berrios of Puerto Rico by brute force in their nationally-televised 12 round bout to score a unanimous upset, victory. Bassey entered the ring a 9-6 underdog. The fight was billed as an elimination bout with the win ner to meet Cherif Hamia of France for the vacant world ti tle. In Montreal, Hamia's man ager, Philippe Felippi, indi cated willingness to match his fighter with Bassey for the Walker Cupper Defeats Robbins Pinehurst, N.C. (U.R) Walk er Cupper Bill Campbell found security in a red-hot putter Sat urday to down defending cham pion Hillman Robbins Jr., 3 and 2, in the final round of the North and South Amateur Golf championship. Cambpell, a Huntington, W. Va., insurance salesman and father of five, had trouble with his tee shots but could do no wrong with his putter to thwart Robbin's bid to become the first champion to succeed himself in 19 years here. SPORTS Weightlifting Class At YMCA Starts Monday A weightlifting class for boys 14 years of age and over will begin Monday at the Medford YMCA. The class will be conducted each Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. Francis (Lucky) Heuer will be instruc tor. The Y also has a men's and boys' general gym class on Mon days and Wednesdays from 5:15 to 7 p.m. and a men's program from noon until 1 p.m. on Mon days, Wednesdays and Fridays. Classes, include weightlifting, volleyball, handball, badminton and swimming. A men's and boys volleyball class is conducted from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The Y also has scheduled gym classes io be followed by free swim periods on Mondays and Saturdays for boys in the 9 to 12 age group. Monday classes are to be at 4 p.m. with swim from 4:45 to 5:15 pjn. On Saturday the gym will be open to the boys from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and the point from 10 to 11 a.m. Gym activity will include games, trampolining, relays, stunts and tumbling. Those .interested can obtain complete details on any of the activities by calling at or tele phoning the YMCA office. His pocketbook might be at bit weak but his heart is stronger than first thought. Chipman said that Earl Yoak ley, veteran referee, will be the third man in the ring for the exhibition by Carmen Basilio, world welterweight champion, and -for the main event. Amos Lincoln, 'Portland, will clash with Bill Mathias, Oakland, in the 10-round , finale.
