Norrfs, president of the Internation al Boxing Club, makes phone calls from his home in Coral Gables, Fla. after the Government filed a re straining order on the IBC. The Government is seeking to dissolve the sprawling IBC empire as an illegal monopoly. Their petition asks that the EEC be re strained from promoting bouts at Madison Square Garden and other arenas throughout the country. Dope Charge At Cal Track San Mateo, Calif. (U.R) The (rooming California horse racing industry was rocked today with doping charges and the state rac ing -commission awaited a Bay Meadows report on the case of trainer Reggie Cornell, one of he nation's top conditioners. Cornell was suspended by the Bay Meadows stewards Thurs day for allegedly stimulating a horse named Drifting Abbey in the first race last Tuesday a race the filly won by five fcngths. "I don't deny that the horse obviously was stimulated," said Cornell, a 35-year-old horseman vho has a public stable of 70 horoughbreds, "But I didn't do t. Discus follows iavelin. Broad jump follows - pole vault. Tendency might be to consider the three-way cinder and field tussle here Saturday just anoth er track meet. But the fast times and good distances recorded in previous engagements and the. contests which loom in several events give promise of a spark ling and entertaining program for followers of the oval sport. Medford is host tJ Crater and Ashland high schools for a var sity meeting set for 1:30 p.m. At the same time a dual ruckus between McLoughlin and Ash land ninth graders will be staged. Among the top rivalries will be the duel in the dashes between Medford's Lorin Christean and Crater's George Juveland. There'll be another javelin toss battle with Medford's Eldon Francis against the Crater twins, Gary and Lary Smith. In the pole vault Don Goyette of Cra ter's Comets is the favorite but John Harvey of Medford's Black Tornado now has an 11-foot vault recorded and will be a contender in that event. Jim Witt of Ashland will chal lenge the Tornado's Mike Kus sell and Pete Kershaw in the quarter-mile and another Grizz ly, Jim Busch will go out against Medford's potent half-mile two some, Bilbee Lane and Les Ling scheit. Neil Plumley will be aiming RVL Directors To Meet Sunday Directors and team managers of the Rogue Valley baseball league will meet Sunday at 2 p.m. to draft final plans for the coming season. The meeting will be held at the office of Cheney Lumber Company in Central Point. . The league schedule will be adopted, cooperation between players, managers and umpires will be discussed, as well as other matters pertaining to smooth operation of the league. A representation of league umpires met Wednesday night for a discussion of rule Interpre tations at which time the ar biters were told by league president Harry Chipman what would be expected of them during the season. Teams making .up the league are Medford Cheney Studs, Tal ent, Camp White, Butte Falls, Grants Pass. Glendale and Cave Junction. Glover, Bower Get All Votes New York (U.R) Fred Glover of the Calder Cup cham pion Cleveland Barons and Johnny Bower of the Provi dence Reds today were unani mous choices on the American Hockey League All-Star team for the 1956-57 season. Other Barons honored were defenseman Steve Kraftcheck and Bo Elik, rookie left wing. Tommy Williams, defenseman for ' the Rochester Americans, and centers Paul Laribee of Providence and Bronco Horvath of Rochester rounded out the "seven-man" first team. Laribee and Horvath tied for the center berth, with 18 points each. JAP.W CERTIFIED Wichita. He's been putting the 12-pound iron ball out better than 57 feet. The school record of 57-8 was established in 1953 by Jack Moad. Medford fans will have high interest in the performances of Wally Larson in the hurdles and Jerry Close in the broad jump. The meet will present also the top Class A-l discus heaver in this district, Jerry Stubblefield of Ashland. Medford, on the strength of its better marks this season in most events looms as the favor ite. The three schools in the early season were rivals in a novice and championship divi sion combat here but no score was kept on that occasion. Phil Austin, Medford miler, will be running against athletes from his former school. He is a transfer from Ashland. Eagle Point Winner Over RR in Meet Rogue River Wayne Chris tian of Eagle Point high heaved the discus for what may be the top prep mark -in the state so far this season as the Eagles overwhelmed undermanned Rogue River 91 to 26 in a track affair here yesterday. Christean threw the platter 158 feet and also won the jav edin with 174-3. The Eagles took 11 of the events and tier for first in the other. Jack Greb scored three of the victories with :10.4 in the 100 yard dash, :17.2 in the 160 and 5 feet 10 inches in the high jump. Lawrence Wagner ran the mile m 5:02 for the only un shared Rogue River first place. Don Hoffman of the Chiefs and David Huffman of Eagle Point tied at 10 feet in the pole vault. Eagle first placers included, V. Baker with :19.2 in the 120 high hurdles, Norm Hooper with 43-6 in the shot put, Dick Schau ble with :56.7 in the quarter mile. Bill McClure with :20.5 in the 160 low hurdles, Norm Du senberry with 2.:14.9 in the half mile and Charles Pettegrew with 18-6 in the broad jump. Bauer Shines In Pro Debut By UNITED PRESS Cal Bauer, former Seattle Uni versity basketball star, made his professional debut Thursday night. And as far as the Wenat chee Chiefs of the Northwest league are concerned it was a howling success. Bauer, a second baseman, busted a three-run homer in his first time at bat to lead Wenat chee to a 6-1 decision over Eu gene as the class 'B' loop opened its split season. At Salem, a veteran of the baseball wars, Vern Kindsfather, got off on the right foot by hurl ing Salem to a 6-4 verdict over defending champion Yakima be fore 1,546 fans. Tri-City got a seven-hit pitch ing job from Bert Haysom and rattled out 13 hits to swamp Lewiston 14-'3. Sheldon Takes Convention Title Jim bneidon, Medford, won the golf tournament yesterday at the convention of the Cali fornia Association of Collectors at Monterey Peninsular club. He had a 73. Sheldon is associated with General Credit service here and is one of the top playerg at Rogue Valley Country club. O - Service St. Mary's Track Victor Jim Darland was winner in four events and was on the win ning relay team yesterday as St Mary's of Medford downed Jack-! sonville 89 to 33 in a track meet on the -Southern Oregon college field in Ashland. Darland, running for the Med ford team, won the high hurdles in :16.1, the low hurdles in :22 and the 100-vard snrint in -11 He took the broad jump with 19 feet 7 inches. i St. Mary's took eight other events with Jerry Kerr copping the mile in 5:07 and the half in 2:22.5. Terry Cooper nabbed the javelin honors with 159-1 and tied with David Mansfield in the pole vault at 8-6. Jerry Flakus won the discus with 109-6 and Dave Espey the 440-yard run in :56.8, while Dick Hayes toured the 220 in :25. Darland combined with Cooper, Hayes and Espey for the relay victory. For Jacksonville Gary Smith was shot put victor with 38-4 and Marion Dowel claimed the high jump with 5-5. Statistics Show Bingham's Heave University of Oregon, Eugene Four new leaders appeared in the top Northern division track and field marks at the end of the third week of competition and 14 of the 45 top perform ances were bettered as Oregon continued to dominate the 1957 season. Steve Anderson of the Ducks took over the 100-yard dash with a brilliant 9.5 and is one of the two men to hold top spot in two events. Idaho's Ray Hatton, who was idle in conference competi tion, still leads in the mile and two-mile. Steve Frye of Wash ington State took top honors in the shot put as all three places changed in the event, Ron Smart of Oregon State jumped into the discus lead, Oregon's Ed Bing ham became the javelin leader with the best toss in his career, 226 feet, SV-t inches, and Oregon State's Wayne Moss became top man in the high jump. High Nationally The marks in the 100, javelin, shot and Doug Basham of Ore gon's 14.4 in the high hurdles all ranked high nationally as the division aces took advantage of good weather conditions. This week Idaho travels to Oregon to test the Webfoot strength and Washington is host to Washing ton State. The sprints and high hurdle races at Oregon last Saturday produced one of the finest dual meet fields in several years and the shot competition between the Beavers and the Cougars ranks as one of the best of all time. Anderson was clocked in 9.5, Gary Mapes of Washington in 9.7 and Duck Jack Morris in 9.8 in the 100 and Washington's Dean Singer trailed Basham in 14.5 and Husky Mike McCluskey was timed in 15.1 in the highs At Corvallis Frye bettered 53 feet in the shot with teammate Burl Grinds hitting 52 feet, 6lA inches, while Beaver Duane Mar shall was third at 51 feet, 10 inches. All a baseball fan need do is visit a United ticket office where he purchases a coupon which, when presented at the "will call" office of the ballpark, is exchanged for an actual ad mission ticket. Cost of the ticket is the same as when purchased at the ballpark and either grand stand or box seats can be re served. Previously, tickets to major league games could only be purchased in cities where games were being played. United serves all major league cities except St. Louis and Cin cinnati where the agreement will not be in effect. ' The threat of rain could, how ever, put a damper on the record drive. NORTHWEST COLLEGE DAY Sunday will be observed as "Northwest Christian co 1 1 ege" day at the First Chris tian church. Northwest Christian col lege, located in Eugene, is main tained by the Christian churches. George Keillor, a student at the college will be guest speaker. His subject will be "It's Up to You." The chancel choir will present the anthem "Seek Ye the Lord" and a congregational business meeting will follow the morning service. At the evening service the Rev. William C. Bassey is the British Empire champ and come from Nigeria, Africa. Berrios hails from Puer to Rico. The two clash in a 12 round nationally televised bout in an American arena with the victor meeting France's Cherif Hamia for the vacant title. Berrios was favored at 9-5. on the basis of his record 21 vic tories and seven losses against well-known opponents, Bassey has won 47 of 57 bouts, but never has boxed in America. Bethel Sparkles For Virginians By UNITED PRESS Bill Bethel, who held out from organized baseball for almost two seasons, is making up for lost time. The six-foot, two-inch right hander won his second straight International league start as Richmond bested Toronto, 4-2, Thursday night. Bethel, who was 12-2 with Binghamton in the Eastern league last season, was touched for a two-run homer by Stan Jok for the visitors' only scores. The win, Richmond's sixth against two losses, enabled the Virginians to keep first place. Standard Oil Reports Net Earning Increase San Francisco (U.R) Stand ard Oil Company of California reported today its estimated net income for the first quarter of the year was nearly $8 million above that for the same period of 1956. ( ? medford K. Johnson Club Leader Keith Jolyison has been named manager of the Camp. White semi-pro baseball team which will cdntend this summer in the Rogue Valley league. He is an ex-Southern Oregon college athletic star and is well known in semi-pro baseball circles of this area. Second practice of the season for the Whiters has been called for 2 p.m. this Sunday at the Medford high athletic field. The Whiters anticipate a strong entry in the loop this year. Sixteen prospect players turned out for the initial drill. All baseballers interested are invited to try out for the club.
