    Nuclear Tests Boost
Cattle Radioactivity
Chicago CU.R) Veterinarians
report that within five days after
testing of a nuclear weapon in
Nevada, marked increases have
been noted in radio-active iodine
in the thyroid glands of Nevada
cattle.
According to the American
Veterinary Medical association,
the Veterinary Corps of the U.S.
Army and Air Force and re
searchers at the University of
California have made exhaustive
studies of the effect of radioac
tive fall-out on livestock and
livestock fodders.
The researchers reported that
the Increased radioactivity in
cattle resulted from the fact that
the animals grazed on grass and
foliage exposed to fall-out.
The thyroids of human beings
in the same area have less than
11000 of the amount of radio
active iodine found in cattle, ths
association said. In human be
ings, this U only a small portion
of the radiation received in a
chest X-ray. the association said,
and is considered harmless.

Not Heayy-Foofed '
Philadelphia UJ.R) You can't

man Philadelphia.
A survey by by the Greater
Philadelphia Chiropody Society
with assistance oft students at the
Temple University School of
Chiropody has turned up these
statistics:
The average size of shoes worn
by Philadelphia "finest" is 9V4D.
The average worn by adver
tising executives is 11 1 2.
The next largest average was
among salesmen 11; next came
store managers, 10 V.
Policemen and "high income
executives" are more considerate
of their feet than any other
groups.
Dr. James E. Bates, chairman
of the board of the GPCS, said
the findings confirmed similar
ones around the nation except
for the width of shoes of local
cops.
"The extra width," he said,
may suggest that local police
have a somewhat better under
standing of their foot problems."
