    Travel Wear, Gear
Take Heights of
Fashion This Year
Both travel wear and travel
gear take to the heights of fash
Ion this season, with the femi
nine traveler finding that her
luggage as well as her apparel
is "light in weight, light in
looks."
Fashions that are light in color
go along with the spring prefer
ence for pastels, and are newly
practical for travel because of
the ever-increasing number of
easy-care cottons, synthetics and
blends.
Lightweight fabrics find their
place in travel wear, too, for
this is a season when silkr, silk
look materials and tissue-weight
woolens have great popularity.
Packable Knits
Packable knits, separates,
suits and ensembles all are im
portant in the travel picture.
As for luggage, designers in
this field have thought in terms
of light - looking, streamlined
bags for travelers. Corners have
been rounded off and heavy re
inforcements replaced by newer
body materials.
For a well-coordinated look,
luggage coverings are in keep
ing with current fashions and
colors.
, The garment carrier, long a
favorite for lightweight and easy
packability, shows many new
features. For example, carriers
are now equipped with stand-up
frames which prevent the bag
from slumping over when it
stands alone. And the frames
usually fold down to small size
for storing.
Matching Cos
Matching cases without the
fold-down feature are often con
structed so that each successive
size fits inside its larger com
panion, to save storage space.
In addition, outside accessory
pockets eliminate fumbling
through the entire bag to find a
wanted blouse or a pair of shoes.
Fabrics for garment carriers
run a full range, including those
which match automobile up
holstery coverings.
Hardside luggage is establish
ing itself as a fashion accessory.
An almost unlimited selection of
colors Is now possible in leather,
plastic or treated materials
which can take a travel beating
and show no scars.
Luggage of every type, from
train case through trunk size,
has been designed for lighter
weight, in many materials.

Mother, Daughter
Fashions Enjoy
Welcome Ovation
"Like mother, like daughter,"
fashions are enjoying a welcomed
ovation this season as more and
more manufacturers have seen
fit to meet the demands for this
popular fad.
The double-exposure styles for
Mom and her little one are be
coming more diversified and
now come in dressy, casual and
swimsuit fashions.
In the past, the mother-daughter
duos were minimized be
cause designers failed in th.eir
eforts to duplicate styles suit
able to both adult and immature
figures.
Flatter Both
This spring, they've caught the
knack imaginatively and happi
ly in fashions that flatter both
Mother and her offspring.
For the beach beauties, a cute
duet is the swimsuit with the
pleated or ruffled skirt.
One manufacturer has turned
out a number of styles in dressy
summer cottons . . . complete
with lacy ruffled trims.
Still another line employs
silks and sheers to bring mother
and daughter closer together.
Most family duets come in
sizes from 8 to 18, for Mother
3 to 6X or 7, for the little lady.

Continental Style Hat Is
Still Favorite in Spring
The well-dressed man is al- trend toward 'round the clock
ways interested in selecting the
proper headware to accompany
his new spring wardrobe and
round out his appearance.
With almost any style of the
new topcoasts and suits, Mr.
America is safe in choosing the
classic snap-brim Belmont dent,
or single crease model.
The flat-top or Continental, as
it is popularly known, is still a
leading favorite in spring head
gear. This popular hat features the
ribbon detail in back and is avail
able in a variety of shapes and
trims.
Mixturts of Fur
The male's tactile sense, his re
actions, primarily, to the touch
of his headgear has resulted in
some very interesting experi
ments with mixtures of fur and
methods of finishings.
As a result, the leading hat
designers have come out with
some pretty smooth finishes.
A typical telescope model of
the Spring lines comes in an
olive velvet finish with a lus
trous band woven in hounds
tooth effect and cross-bowed in
the back. The tear-shaped level
top style with a black scratch
finish flecked with grey and har
monizing black and white cotton
band is also a big star of the hat
stage.
Tyrolean Numben
Tyrolean numbers, one of a
lustre finish with a plaid wool
hand, or a smooth, mixtured
green felt with plaited band of
blue and grey, will hold much
appeal to the "sporty" fellow."
Most of the hats this spring,
are designed for casual wear, but
are in keeping with the growing

casualness.

Men's Slacks for
Spring Are Light;
Color Hues Theme
Spring will bid a fond fare
well to the heavy-weight in the
slack family and to the long
popular charcoal tones.
This year's slacks are as light
as a feather and are well suited
to blend with interesting sport
shirts and coat combinations.
More patterns and lighter col
or hues are the theme for the
well-attired male, with an over
all tapering and slimming of
measurements. Even a slight
shortening of the trouser length
can be detected.
Pencil Strips
Slacks will be seen in thin and
pencil stripes, checks and plaids
in a wide variety of waistband
styles.
Still popular is the English
model with double front pleats,
no belt and a continuous waist
band that include side button
tabs.
An American adaptation of
that model has similar pleats
and proportions, but a rubber
ized inner waistband.
Hollywood's c o n t ribution to
the slack-set brings out the high
rise, with pleat stitches running
to the top of the waist, and the
slacks have a more generous cut.
For the males who have ac
cepted the comparatively new
fad of walking shorts,- they're
here this spring in full color.
Light as a feather in suited,
tropicals and flannel, greater ac
ceptance indicates that men of
all ages will continue to cham
pion the cause of walking shorts
for spring and summer.
CAPS GOING STRONG
Caps continue to show an up
surge in sales. Smartly styled
in worsteds, flannels and tweeds,
they reflect the Ivy influence
with back buckles, belted with
leather or matching material.
Wide and narrow stripes and
solid colors predominate.
SCIENCE SCORES AGAIN
Scientists have now developed
processes which permit woolen
sweaters and sport shirts to be
washed with a minimum of mat
ting or shrinking. Just be sure
to read washing directions care
fully and never use boiling wa
ter.

Comfort Featured
In Spring Shirts
Clothing manufacturers have
gone to great lengths to outfit
the "shirt sleeves crowd" prop
erly, both for leisure hours and
business wear.
Comfort is the big feature in
shirts designed for "just plain
loafing," in colors and combina
tions that are all new!
Action-free knits, cottons and
miracle blends' in sports shirts
will rank high with fashion
conscious men this spring.
Color schemes in the sport
shirt department will be vivid,
but certainly not gaudy. Pat
terns, though they be interest
ing, will be less bold and splashy
than in past seasons.
In -dress shirts, Ivy styling has
made button-downs more im
portant, with shorter collars
coming more "to the point."
Now seen in the newest shirts
of several name brands, is the
permanently sewn-in collar stay.
The collar stays in place thanks
to a flexible plastic and heat
resistant rubber, certified wash
able by the American Institute
of Laundering.
As for the shirt materials,
they are soft to the point of hav
ing that "handkerchief feel" in
open weave mesh, batiste, cotton
and lawn and "dip-dry" dacrons
Wives and mothers will wel
come these new lines of fabrics
that permit easy washing, and
almost no ironing!

Tapered Toes Basic
In Style Thinking j
For Women's Shoes
"To the tip of her toes" will
take on an interesting and more
important meaning in shoe fash
ions as milady's "ten tiny toes"
receive tender treatment this
spring from leading shoe de
signers! Basic to all the style think
ing for '57 is the increasing trend
toward tapered toes. Spring
brings this well-favored design
into the medium and lower price
range.
Medium heels, too, are in
creasingly important on spring
shoes and are available in all
price ranges. As a matter of fact,
this heel has become a style
"must" in every style-wise ward
robe. :
New Collection
Whatever the pattern material
and detailing, the new collection
of shoe designs will be widely
acclaimed for their simplicity
and elegance.
. High-riding vamps with deli
cate trims, are destined to be
popular with ladies of fashion,
as are the open back mules, T
straps and the perennially-popular
pump styles.
As for the T-strap this theme
shows up in every type of shoe,
from low-heel suit sandal to
high-heel dressy shoe. And, there
is the cross-strap, resembling the
tango pump of World War I era.
This spring again will see the
triumphant return of the classic
"spectator" for daytime wear.
Some of these shoes bear dramat
ic new touches to make them
"strictly 1957."
In leather surfaces, patent
leather is destined to sparkle
through spring and summer.
Smooth leathers and suedes, in
combinations or solo grained
surfaces and textures. . . luxuri
ous fabrics and exciting pattern
are all due to step forth smartly
on the spring scene. .
Along with black patent lea
ther, the fashion-wise lady will
be wearing shoes in lavender,
beige, gray, blue and a pale gray
and patent combination. White,
constrasting with black will also
be smart for the new spring
wardrobe. '
A flambouyant mood asserts
itself in footwear for dressier
occasions. Here bold colors such
as turquoise, yellow and orange
step out! Vinyl is still important
in gala occasion shoes. . . and,
there are notes of glitter and
sparkle in "mock" jewels . . .
nailhead metals . . jnetallics. . .
lustered leathers and fabrics
throughout the many shoe moods
for spring.
