For Longer Length
Hair Styles in '57
A major trend for Spring '57,
is the "look of romance" . . .
basically a frankly pretty look
in coifs that are soft, glamorous
and very feminine whether worn
short or semi, puffed or slinky,
feathered or waved.
To be sure, fashion-conscious
females will want to be up-to
the-minute on length, waves,
curls, and sweeps of hercrown
ing glory.
The "bouffant" silhouette
seems to be the vogue of favor
for 1957. And this style, of
course, demands a longer length
to the hair than has been seen
in the past three seasons.
Soft fluffy waves and curls
with the "forward look" are be
ing strongly emphasized to give
that ultra-feminine softness to
the face.
Graceful Contour
Gone is the cropped boyish
look in its place is the grace
ful, fascinating contour . . dis
tinguished by a lovely blend of
puffed waves and feathered
edges.
This does not mean that the
hair has reached the shoulder
length, but 1957 will see the de
cline of the "crew cuts, the Ital
ian cuts and the duck tails."
Top-lock billows up, waves and
feathered ends mark the left
side, a winging line the right.
Crown hair is sleek, nape ends
are puffed out in soft feather
curls.
Feathered edges are coming
back, completely new, softly
pretty and romantic ... in
spired by the "fair lady" trends
. . . the "thirties" influences of
"Auntie Mame" and other star
struck themes.
Spring headlines spotlight the
"little head look," bell shaped
bouffants, and many graceful
variations of waves and curls to
frame the face picture.
Subfeen Fashions
Follow Adult
Styles
Fashions for subteens this
spring feature slim lines, a well
coordinated look and the influ
ence of such adult styles as
capes and blousons.
There is an almost endless
variety of ensembles. One new
looking combination is that of
a sheath jumper teamed with a
matching cotton blouse and
blending checked jacket. Many
, costumes consist of a duster coat
with several coordinating
dresses.
Coats are slim, but not too
straight. Neutral tweeds and
worsted flannels that can be
worn straight through early fall
are favored. Many have detach
able capes. Bulky knitted coats,
especially in red, are also pop
ular. Newsworthy in subteen suits
is a poncho cape suit.
ACCESSORIES TO STYLE
Spring accessories for men,
generally smaller and neater,
include mOny reproductions of
link, clips and tie bars that
were the classics of Grandpa's
day. Designs will be more in
tricate end keyed to specific
themes.

Slim Styles Wearable
with the basically narrow,
eased silhouette in fashion
prominence, new foundation
garments are designed to make
all the many variations of slen
der styles wearable and becom
ing to the majority of figures.
Long brassieres, high girdles
and one-piece garments are the
leading contenders for under
fashion honors.
The long brassieres.'tnore oft
en than not, fasten in front.
Thus they're easy to put on, and
afford the smooth back line re
quired by many slim dresses and
skirts. , '
Ptgged Skirt
The pegged skirt, seen in the
Flemish or Dutch Boy styles,
observes this back slimness and
eases softly in front. Since it
starts from a flat midriff and
tapers narrowly over the thighs,
midriff and thigh control may
be indicated.
Some girdles take special note
of thigh control with panels of
rigid fabric or doubled elastic
from the fullest curve of the hip
to the base of the garment.
The corselet, a new - found
favorite of the slender women
and the old standby of the ma
ture figure, is seen more often
in all-elastic versions.
Starting with sheer cup sec
tions to lift the bosom, it molds
midriff, waist, hips and thighs
with one unbroken sheath of
light yet persuasive stretch fab
ric. Backs are low and straps
are detachable, to suit the dress
neckline as well as the dress
line.
A low backline marks many
of the newest foundations, for
both sheath and bouffant outer
fashions now frequently have
low-cut backs. These low back
foundations are available with
or without straps, in white,
black or a pastel, and in the
form of bandeaus, long line
brassieres, bra-lettes and cor
selets. Brassieres and corselets with
rounded cups lift the bosom and
shape it gently, for a definitive
line under cocoon caps and oth
er fashions that fit close to the
figure. Lace, satin and embroi
dered fabrics make new bras
sieres pretty and feminine as
well as functional.
Color also figures in founda
tions, with pastels favored.
Knit Suits Popular
With Swimmers Now
The sun will shine brightly on
dozens of smartly-styled swim
suits in more conventional cot
tons, lastex, and faillies.
But the high fashion note for
those who really want to "be in
the swim" is the emphasis on
knits in wool, orlon or cotton.
Knit suits are distinguished
by slim silhouettes, many with
camisole tops; others have little
or long sleeves; still others havei
low-cut backs or halter neck
lines. PRETTY PINNINGS
Bar pins with pendants and
floral-bouquet pins, set with
pearls and pastel stones, look
pretty for spring.

Sheath Silhouette
Favored in Dresses
Gently does it for dresses this
spring. The slim sheath silhou
ette is still a favorite, but now
it is softer and rounder with a
new look of ease in the waist-through-midriff
area.
One of the biggest influences
on this look is the "Dutch Boy"
or peg-top skirt. Most often
achieved by darts or tucks at
the waist, it is sometimes car
ried through to full scale pleats.
Draping offers another highly
favored way to ease the slim
skirt. Skirts are draped to side
or back, eased with harem hem
lines or panels, draped with
swags or modified versions of
the hobble hemline treatment.
For more tailored dresses,
pleats are preferred to drapery.
There are many variations in
cluding pegged pleats straight-up-and-down
pleats, released
pleats in sections and wrap
arounds. There are also many pretty
fuller-skirted styles, such as
dresses with darts, pleating and
back fullness.
Many - empire - mood dresses
have self-bands or pleated cum
merbunds that circle the waist
and lower part of the midriff.
Aften, a high waistline is sug
gested by tabs or bows.
Bloused-top dresses, with
belts at the normal waistline,
and shirtwaist styles both con
tribute to the increasing import
ance of belts in spring fashion.
Daytime Fashions Are
Inch or Two Longer
Whither hemlines? Are skirts
drastically longer this spring?
What about lengths for day and
late day?
Evolution, not revolution, is
the answer. Fashion isn't shout
ing, "Down with hemlines!" but
there's more than a whisper of
change in the spring air.
Many daytime fashions are an
i inch or two longer than last sea
son, while cocktail-hour and in
formal evening gar' often reach
es to ankle-bone length, a la
Dior.
"How low" to lower the hem
line is still a matter of individ
ual taste and becoming appear
ance. Height enters into it. The tall
woman can wear 13-inches-from-the-floor
lengths gracefully,
while the smaller woman can
wear somewhat shorter skirts
and still achieve a lowered hem
line look.
Sports Look Shows
Rainwear Influence
The sports look shows its in
fluence in the new rainwear, in
spiring fresh ideas for the use
of such fabrics as wool jersey
and bright-toned felt.
Rainwear has now become an
all-weather fashion, fitting into
any climate at any time of the
year . . all giving a sunny-day
brightness to fashions for those
damp and rainy days.

Ingenious Fashions
Available in Suede
Leather lor Spring
Softer and lighter, artfully
draped, tucked and pleated,
leather appears prominently on
the spring fashion scene.
Full length coats, short jack
ets and car coats are crafted in a
variety of ingenious fashions
from both suede and grain leath
ers. Brand new this spring are
smart leather capes, as well as a
cape-like appearance for coats,
achieved by gentle fullness fall
ing in gathers from a yoke, slant
pockets and scarf-like ties.
Velvety Suede'
Soft, velvety suede and smooth
capeskin and cabretta share pop
ularity as well as versatility.
Suede is no longer exclusively a
country leather, nor are smooth
leathers ' confined to the city.
Both are designed for either city
or country wear.
New leather shades in the
beige to brown range are in the
lead, and make effective tone-on-tone
combinations with knit,
silk and linen.
There's interest, too, in bright
colors such as hyacinth, peacock,
bayberry and jasmine, in suave
black and snowy white and in
black leather with white leather
piping.
Black, While Conirasis
Black and white contrasts,
however, are usually achieved in
large areas rather thar by trim.
For instance, a white cabretta
jacket is lined with black tweed
and has matching tweed skirt.
The "half-and-half" idea ap
pears in leather coats, with" front
of smooth leather and back of
suede in the same or another
color.
Leather jackets fill more func
tions than ever. One new model,
copied from the Italian motor
cycle jacket, is teamed with Ja
maica shorts. Others, for after
five wear, are trimmed with
mink, fox or rhinestones.
Two Looks Seen
In Jewelry Display
Jewelry displays two distinct
spring looks, one light and deli
cate, the other bulky and ele
gant in the Edwardian manner.
Pastel colors are an important
part of the delicate look. Mauve
tints are popular, along with
such flower shades as soft blue,
pink, yellow and green.
Spring flowers inspire many
new jewelry designs as well as
colors, even to the use of more
green foliage effects.
Also contributing to the deli
cate look are the increased use
of crystals, frosty shimmering
beads in iridescent tones, jet iris
and aurora stones. White and
gold combinations continue in
popularity.
Rope necklaces are enjoying a
revival and look especially new
in crystals of varying sizes and
combinations of clear and pas
tels. .
Among the leading bulky and
elegant styles are enamel brace
lets shaped like wide cuffs, gold
Edwardian-type chain bracelets
and neckwear with pendant
balls of flowers, chunky stones
set in burnished gold and bead
necklaces with center pendants
and gold filigree.
Fragile Appearance
Easy To Care For
The fragile appearance of so
many of this spring's fashions
is delightfully deceptive because,
more often than not, they are
as easy to care for as they are
good to look at.
This is mainly due to the de
velopment of many new blends
of natural fibers with synthetics
and to new processing for na
tural fibers such as cotton.
Notable are cottons processed
for easy washing and minimum
ironing and blends of Dacron-and-cotton.
Novelty sheers, such
as nylon chiffon, look as airy
as spun sugar but can be washed
easily, thanks to the use of syn
thetic yarns.
Blends of silk and synthetic
give the high-fashion look of silk
plus easy care.
GONE SOFT
Sleeves have "gone soft" this
springn keeping with the gen
erally 'softer dress silhouette of
the season. One favored treat
ment is the bloused or balloon
effect, achieved through lantern
shapes with fullness starting
directly at the shoulder line.

Variety in Length
Formals for juniors display
variety in length as well as style
this spring. There's . new em
phasis on floor lengths and in
between lengths.
Juniors like the new look of
slim-skirted formals ending
about eight inches from the
floor. There's interest, too, in

'Little Furs' Are
In Greater Variety
There's nothing small about
the selection of "little furs"
available this spring. They ap
pear in a greater - than - ever
variety, in many styles and
shades.
The cape, important every
where this spring, is equally so
in fur. There are elegant fur
capes with slim lines that taper
from rounding shoulders,
straight - hanging capes and
countless other versions.
Cropped jackets, another fash
ion signature of spring '57 also
appear in many young and ver
satile variations, with white
mink, the most luxurious look
ing. Some are waist-length with
decorative button accents, oth
ers are hip-length and bowed
with a touch of satin or velvet.
Little fur briefs and boleros,
in both casual' and dressy styles,
are highly favored for wear
over the new softened skirts.
Coming into renewed promi
nence is the fur stole, some
times reflecting a Spanish
shawl influence, or displaying
the same tapered cocoon shape
that capes make much of.
The color story is an exciting
one, with a wide range of new
shades, including such delicate
spring pastels as pale pink and
green, as well as the more tra
ditional hues.
"Flat, not fluffy," continues
as the theme for fur surfaces,
and the emphasis is on light
weight. Persian lamb, for exam
ple, is processed to be lighter,
softer, more lustrous and drap
