Juniors Imaginative
With Fashions; Have
Variety of Ensembles
Junior fashions, always ad
venturesome and imaginative,
are especially so this spring,
with a wonderful variety of
dresses, ensembles and separ
ates ki a wide range of inter
esting new fabrics and colors.
Silks, "blends, cottons, prints and
navy crepes are favorites.
Both full and slim silhouettes
are popular, with juniors defin
itely endorsing the new soft
ened sheath. Treatments range
from permanently knife-pleated
skirts and controlled gored full
ness to the slim, slow-fitting sil
houette and pegged skirt.
Modified princess styles, semi
fitted overblouse dresses, blous
on types and one-piece dresses
with a two-piece look are other
junior choices.

normal waistline. Its variations
include pleated cummerbunds,
set-in folds and bands, bows
and tabs.
Capes . are especially popular
in cocoon shapes and hipbone
or waist lengths, with the em
phasis on narrow rather than
voluminous types. Many dresses
have detachable capelets.
Flannel, often in pearl gray,
is the favored fabric for suits,
with round lines and softened
skirts preferred. Short, waist
length demi - fitted jackets
teamed with peg pleated, four
gore or all-round pleaded skirts
are popular.
Fitted jackets look fresh with
such interesting new details as
soft back-blousing, bow trims or
self-belts. Double-breasted clos
ings and brass buttons are fa
vored for both fitted and semi
fitted styles.
Skirts take on new interest
through high-rise or cummer
bund tops, wrap-around effects
and buttoned-flap pockets.
Coats Are Youthful
High waistline effects, tiny
stitched collars, narrow belts
and small button closings give
junior coats a youthful look.
The favored silhouette is slim-to-moderately-full.
Dolman push-up sleeves, kim
ono and unmounted sleeves con
tribute to the popular rounded
shoulder look.
Popular new cover-ups for
junior ensembles include cut
away boleros, slim coats, blous
on capes and jackets, drawstring
jackets and tunic coats
Handbags Are Perfect
Costume Coordinates
Handbags are perfect costume
coordinates this season. They're
flat, for becoming wear with
full capes and cape-like fash
ions, and soft in look, for har
mony with softly pleated, tucked
or draped costumes.
Shapes are- simple, with the
elongated square or elongated
rectangle predominating.
Trim is planned to emphasize
the shape. This means a simple
frame in gold, silver or leather,
and a simple closing. Small tabs,
bands or' insets of contrasting
leather texture and trapunto
work are also in order.
The range of leather textures
for daytime handbags is wider
than ever. There are deepgrain
ed broadtail (especially new in
spring colors), soft-grained or
pebbly calf, fine fibered and
petal-smooth calf with a high
sheen and, for casual wear, an
extra-plushy reverse calf.
Pale beiges and grays are
leading colors.

the lovely lady fashions that are

it certainly won't be the fault
of the designers.
There are fashions for the

"shock 'n' show to the "bottom

Skirts, pleats, long legs, long
sleeve tops, and high necklines
are among the important beach
wear silhouettes.
The lady-like attitude toward
the swimsuit styles is evidenced
in the daintiness of such fabrics
as flower prints (even eyelet),
nylon chiffon sashing, draping
and cowling.
A variety of knits, to offer
better figure control, and elasti
cized fabrics, that mold and
shape a pretty figure, will allow
every female a wide selection of
suits to "suit her figure."
Beach accessories give a defi
nitely different outlook to '57
sun-fun fashions, with a huge
collection of jaunty "mad" sun
hats, sombreros, hoods, and
beach-bags.
Even the large ladies will be
"swim-suited" this jseason with
a large line of youthfully stvled
suits available at extremely
moderate prices.
Lingerie Takes
On Pastel Shades
Spring lingerie is off in a pas
tel cloud . ... The look is soft,
tresn, completely feminine.
Coordination is the rule, with
panties and peignoirs, slips, bras
and girdles all matched to each
other. To carry coordination a
step further, undergarments
match outerwear.
Colors carry out the elegant
theme. Dove and pearl grays,
mauve, palest beige, ivory, to
paz, clear blues 'and cameo pink
are some of spring's most excit
ing shades.
White, always favorite, is
touched with flecks of color in
lavish embroidery and ribbon
inserts. -
Petticoats look especially lux
urious and frothy in the extrav
agant use of all-over lace. Ele
gant chantilly is supported by
sheer nylon In two-color effects
black over pink, white over
blue.
Petticoat shapes are carefully
planned to conform with outer
wear shirts.
Bouffants, less in the spot
light, have their place under full,
formal skirts. Sheath, semi-
sheath and softly flounced styles
are making fashion news.
Under spring's slender silhou
ette, slips are more figure con
scious. Contoured bust sections
shape nylon tricot and taffeta
with all-over ' lace and shadow
embroidery.
Slender skirts demand a slip
that is slit at the hemline or
flounded with pleating for walk
ing ease.
The sheer dress fabrics of the
new season have brought a re
turn of the camisole look, with
wider straps, more embroidery
and lace.
This spring your lingerie
wardrobe must be color-coordi
nated, captivating and carefree.
Various Beits Add
Drama to Spring Outfits
Narrow belts in unusual
shapes and wider ones with dec
orative accents add drama to
-pring outfits.
In the first category are belts
with scalloped edges and belts
dipping from high in front to
low in back. Others are inter
woven bands of leather.
Teenage Fashions
Borrow From Best
Of Adult Styling
Teen fashions have come of
age. No longer merely hinting
of grown up styling, this spring's
teenage fashions frankly bor
row the latest and best of
adult fashions.
Blousons, capes, the Dutch
Boy look all are appealingly
adapted to compliment the
teenager's youthful figure. All
make up the teenage spring look
the slim, yet soft, silhouette.
Suits and coats, in particular,
notably reflect the fashion mat
urity of spring styles for teens.
For suits, the bov jacket is still
a favorite, but this spring it is
softened by back blousing and
made more interesting by other
back details such as self-fabric
bows, banding, or tabs.
On of Newest
One of the newest suit sil
houettes is the Dutch Boy l&ok,
featuring a slim but rounded
skirt. Another popular teen
style, ' the pleated skirt, is
achieving more and more fash
ion notice particularly for
dressier suits.
Capes small detachable
shoulder capes or waist length
capes, substituted for suit jac
kets play a fashion-prominent
role.
Like suits, the teen coat line
is basically slim, but a softness
is obtained by the new and im
portant and usually detach
able shoulder cape. The full
length cape coat is another
fashion "steal" from the grown
ups, giving the teener a pretty
sophisticated look.
Adding to the grown-up
charm of teen coat, and suit
fashions silk and wool mix
tures and silky weaves. Import
ant too are flannels and wor
steds. Subtle colors the beige
and grey tones, navy and pastel-
tweeds add further to the
over-all look of sophistication.
Teen dresses also lend them
selves easily to the new spring
styles. The line is slim with back
blousing to lend a high fashion
note of softness.
Topped by caraco jackets,
blousons, shoulder capes, or
dusters, the dresses add up to
pretty teenage ensembles. A fa
vorite the classic or sissy shirt
waist dress is now available
in virtually every fabric and
goes to any casual or dressup
occasion.
Silk and silky textures come
into spring fashion prominence,
joining such teen favorites as
organdies and cottons. Pastels,
particularly lilac, and beige
tones are the color preferences
for dresses.

Most Fabrics Getting
Waterproof Treatment
It's easy to look fashionable
in spring showers this year,
with practically every fabric
from silk to worsted jersey get
ting the waterproof treatment.
Colors for raincoats look new
and fresh, too, especially in
pretty pastel tones.
The very popular full-length
cape styles are a natural for
rainwear, and many have hoods
for extra fashion plus extra
protection.
Another favorite new style,
which looks just as good when
the sun is shining, is a deep
pocketed town coat variation of
the Chesterfield silhouette.

Silk Variations
Follow New Trend
The look of fashion this spring
is one of gentle, feminine ele
gance, and the new spring fabrics
are very much in keeping with
this trend. Silk is the overwhelm
ing favorite in ail its many var
iations, in blends and as a strong
influence on the textures, colors
and prints of other fabrics.
Blends are more popular than I
ever, with silk-and-cotton lead
ing the field. Synthetics have
arrived in a big way' to add to
the general aura of quality.
Newsiest silks of all are the
sheers, especially chiffon.
Going along with the success
of sheers is the popularity of
supple, lightweight, airy fabrics.
Chiffon-weight woolens, tissue
tweeds and fine worsteds are all
favorites. Especially' interesting
is the revival of open-weave eta
mine tweeds and fine meshes.
Another group of fabrics with
a delicate air are the many
woven novelties of Dacron-and-cotton.
Fabrics for coats achieve a
new height of luxury in white
cashmere and camel's hair. Rich
ness is also achieved by blends
of wool with angora or with such
furs as oppossum. Pastel coat
ings of burlap, strawmat and
boule are other favorites.
The novelty sweater with dis
tinctive styling detail has never
been so well designed. Menswear
influence is seen in sports shirt
collars, cable stitching, V-necked
cardigans (newer than V-neck
pull-ons), Turtle, mock turtle
and crew necklines are promi
nent. .
