In Girls Clothing
Pretty styles, aided and abet
ted by easy care fabrics, meet
with fashion approval in this
season's clothing for girls.
"Easy to wash, little or no
ironing cottons, blends and syn
thetics play a major role in
everything from party to play
wear, and give practicality to
such spring-favored style notes
as sheer puffed sleeves, sheer or
Jacy overskirts, rows of ruffles
for sissy shirtwaists and a wealth
of appliques, pleats and tucks.
Full skirts enhance the dain
ty, pretty look of both party
best and school dresses. Slim
styles are a minority in girls'
fashions, and appear mostly in
dress-up ensembles or suits.
Takes to Capes
Like her older sister, the
grade-schooler takes to capes for
spring. Appealing young ver
sions of this trend include the
cape coat with cape collar, the
cape-Jacket suit and the coat
with removable capelet around
the shoulders.
One ensemble features a two
piece look dress with striped
skirt, topped by a reversible
capelet one solid color, the oth
er striped to match the skirt.
In addition to the cape influ
ence, girls' coats frequently dis
play high-placed back details
pleats, gathers, buttons, bows
or back Mousing. Since most
girls' dresses are bouffant, most
coats are appropriately full.
Bath pyramid and princess styles
are liked.
Favored among coat fabrics
are tweeds, flannels and wor
steds, with navy, gray and pas
tels among the outstanding col
ors. Dressy ensembles frequently
include duster coats In cottons
sr blends.
Set Own Trends
While sharing the general In
terest in capes, back, interest,
shirtwaists and ensembles, fash
ions for grade school girls set
some trends of their own.
For instance, nautical styles
eare noteworthy in day dresses
aid play wear. Middy collars,
sfiilor ties, stripes and red-white-rtid-blue
colorings all carry out
the nautical theme.
Distinctively young, too, are
Tyrolean or peasant styles, such
m the suspender skirt or the
jumper-effect dress. A Tyrolean
influence shows up in provincial
prints for separates and shirt
waist dresses. '
Pleasantly surprising is the
abundance of plaids appearing
in girls' spring wearables. There
are miniature and madras types,
with special emphasis on spring
like pastel plaids.
Generally, lavender hues lead
in popularity.

Outfits Popular
Trimmed-to-match outfits, so
successful in the winter of '56,
are receiving even stronger en
dorsement for spring and sum
mer in new follow-up designs.
These dyed-to-match skirt and
sweater sets are predicted to be
a "hot" item on the market and
therefore manufacturers are
making an attempt to give the
ladies just what they want in
this new style-setter.
Typical of this is the dyed-to-match
short sleeved cardigan
with the border and collar in the
same fabric as the slim skirt.
Also effective is a set consist
ing of the short-sleeved slipon
that has narrow bands of skirt
fabric plaited through hand cro
cheted detail on V-plunge collar.
A real classic this spring, is
the raglan-sleeved shorty cardi
gan with the wing collar and the
straight skirt to match.
Colors in these outfits include
palomino, mint green, suntan
(gold) pink and azure blue.

Interest Returns
For Fabrics With
Pattern for Men
Trim styling, heightened by a
"silky" look, and a return of
interest in patterned fabrics,
will bring American men out
into the Spring sun this year
looking smarter than ever, ac
cording to the American Insti
tute of Men's and Boys' Wear.
The continued slimming down
of suit models casts an influence
over all other parts of the male
Spring wardrobe, showing up in
still- narrower brims in new hats
and Continental styling of shoes.
Spreading from coast to coast
and from border to border, the
trim look is even having an
effect on California styling,
which shows signs of adopting
a somewhat more natural sil
houette while still featuring
comparatively broad shoulders.
Major color preferences in
Spring suits will be medium
shades of gray and blue. Navy
blue is due for a big comeback.
Brown and tan hues may be ex
pected to take a back seat for a
while.
Spring will find three-button
single-breasted models coming
into their own to rival the popu
larity of the two-button single-
breasted suit.
Ivy League Styling
Wider acceptance of Ivy
League styling and three-but
ton models has activated the
interest of true Ivy fans in such
features as seven-kich jacket
side vents and welted or slightly
raised seams, in their search for
individuality.
This search for something
slightly different will find four-
button single-breasted models
and a six-button treatment
three on each side of the
double breased su't.
The majority of double
breasted models which will
amount to only a minor factor
in the Spring picture will
have slimmer lines, a smaller
overlap and a higher gorge.
Sports clothes will follow the
general characteristics of suit
styling this Spring, but some
jackets will feature such novelty
effects as side vents, collar tabs,
sleeve cuff and ticket pockets.
Ivy League slacks slimmed
trouser legs, without pleats and
with buckled strap backs find
even greater popularity. Even
pleated slacks will be cut along
narrower lines.
Fabrics for Spring
The fabric picture this Spring
finds silk and silk blends in a
position of great importance.
Some fabrics, though containing
not a silken thread, have been
given the appearance of silk.
But all-silk and blends of silk
and other fibers will be shown
in effects ranging from brilliant,
satin-like finishes to coarse, dull
and tweedy types.
Comfort and economy will
give wash-and-wear clothing
more importance for late Spring
and Summer. In light, medium
and dark shades, wash-and-wear
suits will be available in cords,
seersuckers and imitations of
regular tropical worsted.

Boys Clothing Takes
After Ivy League
Little boy fashions this spring
are junior chips off the Ivy
League block.
For jackets, slim stripes in
such rich color combinations as
red and gray, brown and black
and yellow and brown dominate
the little boy scene. Close sec
onds are glen and madras plaids
and manly houndstooth checks.
Whatever the pattern, jackets
are Ivy-League styled.
Teamed with the jackets are
solid-color coordinated pants in
short or long lengths, and often
with back straps and buckles.
Bermuda shorts are popular,
while striped knickers provide
a new note.
A three-piece set, consisting
of sports coat, gabardine slacks
and a bulky pullover with con
tinental collar trimmed to match
the slacks, makes a particularly
good-looking outfit.
Tweed is a favored fabric for
little boys. Besides lightweight
wools, many of the tweeds are
cotton, silk or synthetic blends.
Gray pin-striped flannel and
rayon flannel are two other
handsome spring suitings.
Highlighting many garments
is the silky look. Silk or rayon
threads are woven through wool
en, blended and cotton fabrics,
giving a smooth, decorative ap
pearance to little boys' spring
clothes.

the slim line for spring '57. At
tractive shaping and softened
slenderness characterize the
newest styles, pointing up the
importance of a look that's
sometimes called "pretty," some
times "lady-like" and then again,
"feminine." By any name, the
look is flattering, and this sea
son it's the height of fashion.
Many significant trends i
emerge as ways of expressing
this look. Outstanding and
charming is the cape, ."which
has just about taken over the
fashion world. Dresses, cos
tumes, separates, suits, coats and
toppers display the cape influ
ence in many forms.
There are cape-Ii'ie flounces

ment. Scoops and bateaus are
gentled by gathers, draping or
bows. The high-in-fiont, low-in-
