Newspaper Page Textr EN MEDFORD (OREGON) Wings of Healing Settlement Reached Portland (U.R) Settlement of a S2 million libel suit against the Wings of Healing Temple in Portland and some of its officers has been reached out of court but attorneys lor the plaintiffs said here today they were bound not to disclose the amount of the settlement. The evangelistic corporation and its leaders, Thomas and Evelyn Wyatt and Jonathan E Perkins, were sued by Mr. and Mrs. Kent Wong who claimed they were libeled in a letter sent in 1955 to about 75,000 persons on the Wings of Healing mailing list. Leland Hess, attorney for the Wongs, said the Wyatts, Perkins and the Wings of Healing cor poration signed a retraction of the alleged libelous statements but that the plaintiffs agree not to disclose the amount of money that changed hands. Not included in the settlement were two other suits brought against the evangelists for sums in excess of $200,000. Fire Beats Wreckers To Old Buildings Corvallis U.R Plans to de stroy abandoned buildings of the old Corvallis Lumber Com pany received an accidental as sist Monday night when fire consumed the structures ahead of schedule. The firm was closed more than a year ago and the mill was being salvaged for scrap. An unattended bonfire about S p.m. went out of control and destroyed several of the build ings but was no threat to adja cent property. Firemen let the flames go unchecked because crews had planned to bum the buildings in about two weeks anyway. Damage was estimated at about $250. MAIL TRIBUNE PROSPECT Chorus Presents Program By GENEIL SPRUILL Prospect The Prospect High school chorus presented a "night of music" Tuesday, April 16. Several numbers were sung by the choir and there were solos, quartets and organ and piano music presented during the eve ning. The chorus sang "Hallelujah Chorus" and concluded with "The Cross". There was no charge made for the musical entertainment. Last week representatives from the Marines, Aii; Force, Army, and Navy, spoke to Pros pect students, 16 years and over who were interested in the Arm ed Services. Each of the repre sentatives gave information on their branch of service. A ques tion and answer period was held afterward. Several girls in the sixth and seventh grades attended a pa jama party Thursday, April 18, given by Janet Karjala at her home. It was Janet's 12th birth day. The Nazarene church held service on the" evening of Good Friday. There was a big attend ance. On Wednesday, April 17, the Nazarene church members in Prospect had their annual elec tion and the reading of last year's records. On Monday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. the Prospect High school juniors sponsored a movie en titled "Always Room for One More," starring Cary Grant, and Betsy Drake. Mrs. Vera Spruill spent the past eight days visiting at her son's home in Prospect. The public is invited to at tend the special services held at the Chapel in the Pines April 24 to May 5 (except Saturday) at 7:30 p.m. The Rev. C. Wyn koop, evangelist and singer, will be the speaker. Mrs. Ruth Hart, former own er of the Cascade Gorge store spent several days visiting with her friends at the Gorge and Prospect recently. The Easter sunrise service was held on the Rogue river bridge viewpoint just below Prospect, at 5:45 a.m. A short Easter mes sage was given by the Rev. Ger ald Gardner. The High school choir, under the direction of Mrs. H. Ken neth Vannice, sang the "Halle lujah Chorus" and other special musical numbers were present ed. Immediately following the service an Easter breakfast was held at the Community hall. Miss Sue Betts celebrated her 13th birthday April 14, with 14 friends. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sharp and family traveled to Windston, Ore. over the Easter holiday and visited at the home of their son. The PTA met Tuesday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. at toe school cafeteria. A potluck dinner was served. The speaker for the evening was from Southern Ore gon college. He talked on col lege life and the value of higher education. Newly-elected officers for the year 1957-1958 are Mrs. Dar Bevens, president; Mr. Ralph Young, vice president; Mrs. Jack DeRosier, secretary and Mrs. Clarence Hedgpeth, treasurer. Mrs. Hedgpeth attended the state convention at Pendleton, Ore., April 9, 10 and 11. The PTA will hold a food and rummage sale Friday, April 26. The sale will include knick knacks, clothing, furniture and canned and baked foods. Coffee and cookies will be sold. The sale will be on the lawn of the hotel, weather permitting. If the weather is bad it will be held at the Boothby Hardware store. Prospect Lions auxiliary will hold their next executive board meeting April 24 at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs. James H Grieve. The auxiliary sent a complete Easter outfit to Shir ley, their foster daughter. Mr. and Mrs. John Freeland and children have been visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Josephson. The Freeland's, formerly of Prospect, are now living at Myrtle Point. The young people of the As sembly of God church held an Easter party on Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Bard. Games were played and refreshments served. Mrs. Vance Wilson has been quite ill and under doctors care. Neuberger Says State Situation Difficult Salem 0J.R) Gov. Robert D. Holmes and the state Legislature are faced with an extremely dif ficult situation this year because of Oregon's less favorable eco nomic condition, Sen. Richard Neuberger said here Monday night. The Oregon Democrat also told a Jefferson-Jackson banquet that attacks on the federal budg et have been promoted by right wing groups in an effort to scut tle aid to schools and Pacific Northwest public power proj ects. Neuberger said average in come of Oregon residents had dropped from $202 above the national average to about $13 below the average in the past decade. He attributed this to a decline in the lumber market, to hard hit agriculture and what he call ed the "shutting off" of needed new additions to the Columbia river low-cost federal power pro gram. Over half the high school boys in the country and one-third of the high school girls have part time work, according to the In stitute of Life Insurance. PHONE 2-8355 (Salesman Needed) Moscow Broadcast Accuses Dulles London (U.R) Moscow Ra dio accused Secretary of State John Foster Dulles today of try ing to sign up the Afro-Asian bloc in the American orbit and called this an attempt to "drive liberty into a corner and chain it up." Moscow Radio made the state ment in commenting on Dulles' speech in New York Monday to American editors. "Influential men in Washing ton have been stressing frankly that the correlation of strength between Socialism - Communism and capitalism depends directly on these nations," the broadcast said. It said Dulles and other West ern statesmen were "disturbed" by the fact that "several coun tries have recently shown con vincingly that they understand liberty not at all as it is under stood by the statesmen in Lon don, Paris and Washington." "This disturbance runs all the way through his speech, through the attempt to put across his lecture on liberty like a boxing trainer," the broadcast said. It added that Dulles "emphasized that Washington approved only of liberty which is integrated with military alliance with the United States." TV Quiz Contestant Rallies To Tie Foe New York '(U.R) Hank Bloomgarden, 28, medical re search consultant who has won $52,500 on the television quiz show "Twenty-One," narrowly escaped being deposed as the program's current kingpin Mon day night. Failure to name the second of two women elected governors in the United States nearly cost Bloomgarden his crown. The re searcher correctly named Mir iam (Ma) Ferguson of Texas as one of the former women gov ernors, but was unable to iden tify Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyo ming as the second. , Blqomgarden rallied, however, to tie his opponent, James Snod grass, a 34-year-old artist. They wound up in a 21-21 deadlock, and will return in two weeks to try to answer further questions. Richards of the State Board of Higher Education says there may be a chance for salary hikes of some 25 per cent for teachers at Oregon's state uni versity and colleges. Richards told the board Mon day that the Ways and Means Committee of the Legislature had recognized the need for sal ary increases because of boosts in neighboring states. He said that if the program in cluded in the 1957-59 budget is approved his staff would come forward with a plan to bring overall salary hikes to 25 per cent. The board authorized the chancellor to raise student fees $6 a term for Oregon students and $11 a term for out-of-state students, providing the Legisla ture approves the boost. A resolution stating the board's position . on millwork done in University of Oregon shops for higher education build ings was authorized. Unions have complained about the prac tice. Board members said they felt it was their duty to do the best and most economical job for education and that work done in the university shops was faster and saved money.
