SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Monday, April 22, 1957 On The Side By E. V. DURUNG (Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc.) No doubt you are familiar 1 with the Kipling classic titled "They're Hanging Danny Dee ver in the Morning." In the yes teryear it was, along with the poems titled "Gunga Din" and "Boots," a great favorite among competitors in elocution con tests. However, the poem "Dan ny Deever" had no great influ ence on life in general. On the other hand a poem titled "They've Hung Bill Jones" by the Atlanta, Ga., poetic genius, Frank L. Stanton, saved a man's life. On the night before a hang ing Gov. Oswald West of Oregon read this poem and wag so af fected by it he commuted the ' sentence of the condemned man. Frank Stanton was an extreme ly versatile poet. Those great 'songs "Jest A-Wearyin' for You" and "Mighty Lak a Rose" are both from poems of his set to music. "They've Hung Bill Jones" is a four verse poem in cluded in Stanton's "Songs of j the Soil." The third verse, which especially affected the governor of Oregon, is as follows: They've hung Bill Jones Fer a crime of his. An his wife an his . .Mother is a-dyin'; An' his children's took Where the orphants is An the col wind A'creepin and a sighin. Among the Married How would you like to be compelled to walk behind your wife in public appearances? Also to have to take orders from her. Not much, I guess. Rumors have it that Prince Philip of, England doesn't care for it either. Makes him feel frustrated. Could Philip become King of England and have equal rights with the Queen? He could if parliament passed a law to that effect. There is a precedent for it. Prin cess Mary Second of England refused to become Queen unless her husband. Prince of Orange, shared the throne with her and as king had equal rights. The Rritish parliament gave in to her and passed a law in accord . ance with her wishes. So be gan the reign of William and Mary. Race Horse Researchers Thoroughbred racing with p'ari-mutuel wagering has long been popular in Japan. Tokyo has several race tracks. The principal Japanese turf paper is called "Sincere Advice on Cur rent Race Horse Performance." There are many professional tip ster in Tokyo. They are called "Race Horse Researchers." They are unionized. Their or ganization is called "The Hon orable, Democratic and Peace Loving Union of Ail Japanese Race Horse Researchers." Get It Right Where did the night club floor show originate? It was originat ed by Gus Edwards at Reisen webers on Columbus Circle in New York City. The Dansant, featuring paid dance partners, was also originated at Reisen webers. Among those acting as dance partners in those days at Reisenwebers were Rudolf Val entino, Ricardo Cortez and George Raft. Sidelights British advocates of nudism now call themselves "naturoso phists." They have formed an organization called "The Inter national Order of Naturoso phists" . . . Am asked if Gari baldi, the Italian patriot, was red-haired. He was. Incidentally, during a period ef exile, Gari baldi lived on Staten Island, N.Y., and became a citizen of the United States. Color Psychology The British Princess Margaret continues to feature pink as the shade of her evening attire. She also features the same shade in other articles of attire when ever possible. According to the color psychologists, pink is the color with the most male attrac tion power. So evidently the Princess is not adverse to male attention. She is also a chain cigarette smoker which some psychiatrists allege is a sign of frustration. That is, not being loved as much as one would wish to be. LOOK MOM, I'M LOST New York UJ.PJ It was a somewhat embarrassed Frank DeFeo who sought police aid after he and his three children became separated from Mrs. De Feo during the Easter parade. De Feo is a Philadelphia policeman. Washington !U.R President SBisenhower has personally ap pealed to high school students to complete their schooling and thus made "their finest contri bution" to the nation's future.
