Applications for Old Age,
Insurance Payments Rise
A total of 725 applications for
payment under the old age and
survivors insurance program
were received by the Medford
office of the Social Security ad
ministration during the period
from Jan. 1 through April 11,
W. V. Nusbaum, district mana
ger, has announced.
This compares with 405 ap
plications received during the
name period in 1956. The Med
ford office services Jackson and
Josephine counties.
Of the application, 116 were
received from women age 62 to
64 who became entitled to pay
ments under a recent amend
ment to the social security law
lowering the age requirement
for women. Payments to insured
women workers and the wives
of insured workers who file
prior to age 65 are reduced up
to as much as 25 per cent. Pay
ments to i widows of insured
workers are made at the full
amount they would have re
ceived at age 65, Nusbaum said.
Self-Employed Workers
A total of 172 applications
were received from self-employed
fanners age 65 or over who
were brought under the pro
gram for the first time in 1955
and who became eligible for
payments as of Jan. 1 this year.
In addition to the applications
for retirement and survivors
benefits, the Medford office for
warded 63 applications for dis
ability payments during the
same period. The applications
came from disabled persons 50
years of age or over who have
had at least five years work un
der the social security program
within the 10-year period prior
to the date they became dis
abled. Nusbaum urged disabled per
sons who have worked under
social security for at least five
years, and whose disability is
expected to continue indefinite
ly, to contact the Medford office
prior to June 30. Applications
taken after that date can be
made retroactive fpr only a lim
ited period with the result that
some otherwise eligible persons
may lose their entitlement to a
"freeze" of their earnings rec
ord, if under age 50, or benefit
payments if 50 or over.

the Social Security administra
