Hubbard Brothers Marks 73rd Year In Business Here Hubbard Brothers Hardware firm, Main st., and Riverside ave., ii celebrating the 73d an niversary of its founding start ing today. The anniversary will be marked by specially reduced gale prices on merchandise in the store. Members of the firm are Ro land, Chester and Robert Hub bard. It was founded by Fortun- atis Hubbard at Jacksonville in 1883 and has remained in the same family since that time. Furtunatis Hubbard was a personal friend of John Deere, who established the John Deere Implement company. Hubbard Brothers store is the oldest con tinuous John Deere dealer west of the Mississippi. Moyd to Medford The firm was moved from Jacksonville to Medford soon after its establishment. It was set up on a lot at Central ave. and Main st. The store has been at its present location since 1885. The building originally housed a saloon and general store. In 1933 the firm bought the building next to the present tore, and in 1934 the two build ings were adjoined. Family ownership of the store has included Fortunatis Hub bard in 1883; Fort Hubbard, 1884 to 1891; A. C. and Lex Hubbard, 1891 to 1896; Fort Hubbard, 1896 to 1926; A. C. Hubbard, 1891 to 1943; Roland Hubbard, 1919 to the .presert; Chester Hubbard, 1930 to the present and Robert Hubbard, 1948. The anniversary sale will end Saturday, April 27. THOMASINE SMITH Eagle Point Mayor Ray Tresham entered Sacred Heart hospital Thursday, April 11, for additional back surgery. Tre sham underwent surgery in March. Overnight guests last week end at the Claude Griffin home were Claudia Cave and son, Gary, and one of Claudia's high school classmates, Miss Lena Mae Tibbits. Tom Riley and Dwight Mc Corkle took two cases of the Roxy Ann Gem r.nd Mineral club display rocks to Eugene for competition with other rock clubs of Oregon. They won blue ribbons on their displays and also a trophy as grand prize for the best display in the show. Ladies of the Eagle Point area served dinner to 45 friends and members of the Harold (Cooney) Briggs family following Mr. Brigg's funeral Thursday. Rehearsals are underway for the senior class play, "Strictly Formal," to be presented the lat ter part of May. A 4-H pie social will be held at the Eagle Point Grange April 26. Ladies and girls have been asked to bring pie. There will be a program and a dance with live music follow ing the social. The pre-schooler Easter Egg hunt sponsored by Mrs. E. L. Cunningham will start at 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, at her home on the Brophy rd. Each child is asked to bring their own container and should be accom panied by an adult. Mrs. Jim McDonald was hon ored at a stork shower at the Lloyd Breeding home Friday evening April 12. Hostesses were Mrs. Lloyd Breeding and Mrs. Ray Arthur. Oren Pollock returned to school this week after recover ing from an appendectomy in March. Dallie Kenner, sister of Mrs. Lee Lucas, has returned to Os teopathic hospital in Medford for further treatment. After spending three days in Pendleton at the convention, Mrs. Ayres picked up her par ents at Wallowa to return home by way of Portland where they visited another sister, Mrs. Glen Jewett, and family who are be ing transferred to San Francisco in the near future. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Humph rey and three children of Palo Alto, Calif., are spending their Easter vacation in Eagle Point visiting Mrs. Humphrey's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Cly mer, and Humphrey's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Humphrey, and other relatives in the val ley. Humphrey is a faculty mem ber of an elementary school in Palo Alto. A reminder to dog owners that all dogs must be kept tied or on a leash during the months of April, May and June, has been issued, me owners are- subject to a fine and responsible for damages caused by the dog or dogs during these months, city officials said. Easter Egg Party Set At Central Point . Central Point An Easter egg party for the children of Central Point will be sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the city park on Manzanita st. between Sixth and Seventh sts. xThe business men, who form erly were sponsors of the event, are donating candy eggs and prizes for the hunt. Youngsters will seek eggs in one to four, five to seven and eight to 10 age groups. KIWI: Teamster Officials Asked To Answer To Charges of 'Goon Squads in Scranton Washington 'U.R) The Sen ate Rackets Committee hauled up three 'Teamster union offic ials today to answer charges that they furnished "goon squads" for a wave of violence against non union building contractors in Scranton, Pa. The witness list was headed by John Durkin, convicted of con spiracy in the dynamiting of one house being built with non union labor and under indict ment for shoving over the wall of another house. Durkin, in a brief appearance Wednesday, refused to state his occupation. He took refuge in the Fifth Amendment which guards against possible self-incrimination. He is secretary treasurer of Teamsters Local 229 in Scranton and vice president of the Pennsylvania Federation of Labor, both connected with the AFL-CIO. Scranton Windup Today The AFL-CIO has taken the position that union officials who use the Fifth Amendment be fore congressional committees have no right to hold office. Durkin and Teamster business agents Robert Malloy and Jo seph McHugh were recalled to day because their attorney was absent Wednesday. The commit tee hoped to wind up the Scran ton case with their testimony, Committee counsel Robert F Kennedy told newsmen the com mittee had no plans to question public officials from the Scran ton area about testimony at Tuesday's hearing. This included charges that police protection was lacking in the face of union violence, Scranton Mayor James T. Han son submitted an affidavit deny ing earlier testimony or ex- boxer Paul Bradshaw, sometime Teamster muscle man, who claimed the mayor once asked him to "lay off" spilling the story of the house dynamiting until after a 1955 city election, Indictments Sought The committee asked the Jus tice Department to seek a per jury indictment in connection with conflicting testimony of Joseph Bartell. president of the Scranton Building Trades Coun cil, and other witnesses Bartell, business agent of Lo ral 261 of the Carpenters Union, denied Bradshaw's charge that 4 CLUB NEWS F.fil. Point Childcara Club There was a Eagle Point Child- care 4-H club meeting at the school April 16. We discussed our skating par ty. It will be April 19. We will go to Grants Pass. Sandra Wallis, Reporter. Phoenix Kitchen Workers The Phoenix 4-H club Kitchen Workers met the afternoon of April 13 in the home economics room at the high school. Several cake recipes were used including an Easter Bunny cake by .Virginia Daugherty, pineap ple-upside-down cake made by Virginia Martin, with Norman Ditsworth and Nedra Harris also making cakes. Among casseroles made was a tuna casserole dish by Pamela Grove and Dorothy James. The next regular meeting will be May 11. Darilyn Popow, Reporter. Kandy Kidi Cooking Club A combined meeting and shower was held for our new leader Doreen Bradshaw April 2. A previous meeting had been held March 19 to plan the show er. Business discussed besides the shower was how everyone liked the "Friendship Follies." Also discussed was our cake sale, and the idea of taking cookies out to the old folks home., Committees named to work on the shower were: games, Ern estyn and Patsy Charley; cake, Marlena and Sharon Coffman; punch, Carolee Brantly and Car ol von der Helen; place cards, Mary Lou Savage; and napkins, Carolee Kuest. The shower was held at Charleys and games were played after the meeting. The guest of honor received many gifts. " Refreshments were served. U.R) A volun teer fireman who loses his false teeth in the line of duty can have them replaced without cost under a bill signed into law to day by Gov. Averell Harriman. Roseburg (U.R) Francis P Watson, 40, of Roseburg. father of four children, was crushed to death by a : log in a Roseburg mill pond today. Bartell ordered the non-union-built house damaged. He swore he was innocent of the con spiracy charge of which he was convicted. Two other Scranton union leaders convicted with Bartell also said they were innocent. They testified that their superi ors have made no move to re move them from office despite the new AFL-CIO ethics code which calls for ousting convicted labor leaders.
