Oregon Senate Memorial Urges War Veteran Aid Salem (U.R) A memorial to Congress to authorize pensions for needy veterans of World far I was overwhelmingly pass ed by the Oregon Senate Tues day with a brief flurry of em tion aitef Sen. John D. Hare, Hillsboro Republican, made ref erence to a small segment of veterans who would benefit as winos." Sen. Monroe Sweetland. Mil. waukie Democrat, said, "it is shocking almost beyond answer, to call them skid row bums and winos." Value Questioned Sen. Hare made the reference when arguing against the mem orial. He said that, in the first place it was questionable wheth er "a memorial to Congress is worth the paper it is written on." He said he favored aid to vet erans, especially to those disabled- But he said several aids already were offered to dis abled veterans, including hos pital care, and now "we have social security." He also said the several veterans organiza tions extend aid to deserving veterans. In his reference to "winos" Sen. Hare said several veterans had told him that they were opposed to the memorial, that among those who wanted it n Oregon, were the "winos" who live in inexpensive hotels in northwest Portland. Couldn't Let Reference (So Sen. Sweetland said he hadn't intended to speak on the mem orial, but couldn't let the ref erence to "winos" go unchal lenged. He said BJM3, which had already passed the House, urged Congress to enact legisla tion only to those World War I veterans with strictly limit ed incomes. The memorial passed the Sen ate with only three dissenting votes,- those of Sens. Beltoii, Hare and Husband. Chrysler Leads In Mobilgas Run Winnemucca, Nev. (U.R) Chrysler products and Mel Ala- bury Jr., last year's winner, led the pack today in the third leg of the Mobilgas economy run as the race began to tell on the ladies in the unofficial compe tition to determine whether men or women are the better driv ers.
