The experiment was with la boratory rats, since no one can experiment with human beings this way. Dr. William R. Thomp son began by conditioning five female rats so they could be frightened in a standard man ner. This was done in a tvo-com-partment shuttle box. A buzzer sounded, then an electric cur rent coursed through the floor of the compartment containing the rats. So the rats learned that the fcuzzer meant that they were about to be shocked. But they also learned they could avoid shock by pushing a door open and going into the second com partment when the buzzer sounded. After they had become preg nant, the five females were re turned to the shock compart ment and five other pregnant females were put to peaceful living in a comfortable cage, to serve as controls. Current Shut Off Three times a day during their pregnancies, the buzzer sounded. But now the door to the ether compartment was locn ed. There was no escape. The electric current was shut off there was no shock either. This was calculated to produce pure ly emotional shock in the rats. In due course, these experi mental rats and the control rats brought forth their young. Thirty off-spring of the former were tested against 30 off-spring of the latter, first when they were 30 to 40 days old and again when they were 130 to 140 days old. These tests were to measure how active the young dared to be in the rat world. One test measured activity without stim ulation. The second measured Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent Hollywood (U.R) Only in Hollywood Department: Some movie queens have to store their Easter bonnets In the refrigerator. - Heads often are bare in this sunshiny land, but this time of year the ladies bor row some ele gance from Aline Mojby eastern cities and blossom out in bonnets. And this season they're going in for a new sensation hats made of real flowers. " If the bees follow Jane Rus sell into church next Sunday, it's because her huge natural straw floppy sailor hat will be covered with real daffodils, white daisies and blue cornflow ers a $42.50 number. Whiting Sisters Outfitted Easter Day Margaret Whiting will wear a pink hat covered with huge pink cabbage roses, the "kind ants like. Sister Bar bara Whiting's Easter bonnet be a small sailor hat trim- aged with white daisies. oBarbara Hale and Barbara Lawrence also will go to church in real blossoms pink cabbage roses on dark green small hats. These bonnets are the brain child of a creative florist, Stan ley Medeiros. He wins notices each Christmas by whipping up yule trees of velvet and jewels for movie stars. Come Easter his Beverly Hills shop is a-flutter with celebrities and rich ladies from Texas buying the hats he makes of real flowers. Refrigeration Necessary "They smell nice, look real and last for three or four days if kept in the refrigerator,' declar ed the florist. "And they're much smarter to wear than cor sages that just leave holes in dresses." Any female desiring a live bonnet can take an old hat to her florist for trimming, he ad vises. Between wearings the hat should be sprinkled with water or wrapped in oil and pop ped into the refrigerator. Other real flower hats he's made for film folk at $27.50 up include a huge pink picture hat trimmed with violets and red roses and a tiny pink chiffon hat with a big bunch of lilacs trailing down one side. Laughs of the Day . . Jutland, Vt. iU.R) Prospec tive jurors in a highway acci cnt case were asked by Attor ney Frederic - J. Delaney Jr. aether any of them had ever tee involved in a traffic mis ts p "i have," said one. "I kcocked a boy off a scooter." "Yes," chimed in another, Varei that was my boy on the footer." Both were excused. Grand ' Rapids. Mich. UP.) Henry Johnson told police that someone broke into his home and look only one item a piece of apple pie. hastily called for the old am bulance. Jackson, Mich. !U.R) A vital motion hit a snag when Roy Flewelling of Hanover Town ship, substituting for an absent member of the County Board of Supervisors, absent mindedly voted "no" on a routine motion to allow the supervisors their pay for the day. Other super visors quickly set him straight, and the vote was made unanimous. how long it took them to leave their home cages and go along an alley to food, after they had had nothing to eat for 24 hours. Low activity and much tim idity and hestitancy in getting to food were taken to be indi cations of "high emotionality" of baby rats who were suf fering from ingrained fright re sulting from shock. Necessarily for- scientific appraising, the measuring was done statistically. Spectacular Differences The results showed that the off-spring of the shocked moth ers were much less active and took much longer to get to food than the off-spring of the un shocked. These differences were rather spectacular 30 to 40 days after birth, and still were "significant" 130 to 140 days afterward. " - Thompson said in his report to the American Association for the Advancement of Science that the experiment gave "some grounds for supposing that pre natal maternal anxiety does ac tually 'increase the emotionality of the offspring." He specified that he suggested this "tentative ly," pending ''further expert mentation." The way it would work if it does work is that emotional shock causes the mother's reg ulating lands to release an over- supply of hormones which reacn the unborn through the maternal-fetal blood exchange . and condition the unborn's glands to .under-produce. Thompson conducted his ex periments at Queens University, Kingston, Ont. He is now on the faculty of Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn.
