V Doris Day T WMW4 by Norman Weser Loday is palm Sunday, and a week hence all Christendom celebrates Easter. During the past weeks of the Lenten sea son, culminating with the Easter service, music-lovers have had available to them some of the finest religious music ever performed, thanks to records. Since individual tastes vary widely on this subject, we hesitate to recommend any particular selections. Instead we sug gest you visit your local record shop where you will find many excellent re ligious and inspirational albums. TOPS ON THE RECORD SHELVES: De- , lightful is the word for Doris Day and her new album, "Day by Day." With Doris singing as only she can, and Paul Weston and his orchestra providing the musical background, this Columbia album should wind up as one of the year's best bets. MUSIC FOR FAMILY LISTENING: The wonderful "Dukes of Dixieland" are out with Volume 2 on Audio Fidelity, this time featuring Betty Owen, better known as the Duchess, and it looks like another winner. For a change of pace, try Sarah Vaughan singing "Great Songs from Hit Shows," a two-record Mercury package, or Roberta Sherwood with "Show Stop pers," a new Decca release. Still on the show-tune kick, but with a novel twist, is the new Henry J. Kaiser record company debut, "Broadway Wears a Lei," a most interesting recording experience. Like a bit of Gay Paree in your program? Try "Bonjour Paris," a Columbia waxing fea turing Michel Legrand in beaucoup hi fi. For a varied vocal program, start with the Crewcuts singing "Music ala Carte" on Mercury, something old and plenty good. Then follow with Peggy Lee's Dec calbum, "Dream Street," truly a dem onstration of what sweet dreams are made of. Finally, there's Betty Johnson, whose new Bally effort is identified simply as "The Touch," but it's a touch of fire. Moving to the classics, you won't want to miss several new Angel releases, in cluding the brilliantly performed "Abduc tion from the Seraglio"; the Liverpool Philharmonic and Huddersfield Choral Society in Handel's "Israel in Egypt," a work destined for greatness, and Otto Klemperer and the Philharmonic Orches tra performing Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5," a most beautiful and moving read ing. For warmth and freshness coupled with strong rhythmic impulses, listen to "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and "Sym phony in C Major" as done by the London Symphony Orchestra on Mercury. THE SPINNING DISK: The Four Fresh men have been re-signed by Capitol for a six-year stretch . . . Harry Belafonte, now America's No. 1 record seller, stars in a new movie to be called "Island in the Sun" . . . Nick Noble's new Mercury al bum, "You Don't Know What Love Is," finally establishes this singer as a record ing star . . . Insiders along Tin Pan Alley predict the calypso rage will fade unless . true West Indies music is used instead of the synthetic brand now being pushed by most record companies . . . Contrary to reports, Jimmy Dorsey will not retire from-the band business. JAZZOMANIA: For those who are new to jazz, as well as those who are experts on the subject, "Encyclopedia of Jazz on Records," a four-record Decca package, is a must. It covers 40 years of jazz, from Armstrong to the Bird. Records may be purchased individually as well as in the deluxe package. "The Most Happy Piano" is just that, a Columbia delight by Erroll Garner. Two outstanding Atlantic albums are "Wilbur de Paris at Symphony Hall" and Lars Gullin playing his magical bari tone sax.
