The first major league team to reach home, the ex-Yankee sprinkled Athletics rallied with four runs in the ninth inning Thursday to shade the Brooklyn Dodgers, 5-4. Billy Hunter and Irv Noren contributed singles to the rally by way of emphasizing that old Yankees never forget how to beat the Dodgers. First-baseman Vic Power of the Athletics was hit on the head by a throw by Don Zimmer in the ninth but was not believed seriously injured. He's being kept in Research hospital for a few days, however. Pirates Con Another The Pittsburgh Pirates rolled to their 19th victory in 27 games when they walloped the Detroit Tigers, 10-2, behind the six-hit pitching of Dick Hall, Elroy Face and Bob Purkey.' Dale Long blasted a two-run homer and rookie Paul Smith a three-run round-tripper for the Pirates. " The Chicago Cubs won their spring series with the Baltimore Orioles, 10 games to eight, with a 7-6 triumph over them. Dee Fondy led the Cubs' l$-hit attack with a pair of two-run homers. Mickey Mantle hit his third homer in as many games but the world champion New York Yankees suffered a 6-5 loss to Ed Lopat's Richmond Spiders of the International league. Neal Wat lington singled home the win ning run off Tom Sturdivant. Lindy McDaniel pitched seven innings and Willard Schmidt two, allowing a total of five hits, as the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Chicago White Sox, 5-0. Homers by Stan Musial and Hobie Landrith led the Card at tack on Billy iPerce. George Crowe's three - run homer in the eighth inning broke a tie and pave Cincinnati a 7-4 victory over the Senators at Washington despite homers by Ed Fitzgerald and Roy Sievers of hte Senators. Cleveland shoved over two runs in the' ninth to beat the New York Giants, 8-4, at Miami. Giant lefty Johnny Antonelli, New York's opening game nom inee, was blasted for 10 hits in eight innings but Early Wynn of the Indians, starting for the first time since March 17 because of an ailing hip, allowed only a homer by Willie Mays in five innings and walked none. Her sports car is one of the many entered in sports car races at Dillingham Field near Honolulu April 19-21. More than 150 Calif ornians have entered the races. RVRC Holds Picnic Trii Rogue Valley Retriever club will have a picnic trial this Sun day at Hoover lakes in the Camp White area. The public is invited to watch members work their dogs on re trieving problems. RVRC dogs are doing well in trials on the coast this year. Last week end at Tacoma, Wash., Weldon Kline's Flash was victor in the amateur open. The win put Flash well within reach of amatur championship rating. At a Klamath picnic event last Sunday, Kara, owned by Leonard Nelson and handled by Dave Nelson won the derby. Big Sam, handled by Tom Rickard took second in the qualifying stake despite a badly cut foot. Mrs. Dave Nelson and Charles Steele were other RVRC repre sentatives at the Klamath event. Members of the local club this Sunday intend to work their dogs on pheasants in preparation for the American Kennel club licensed trial the following week end in the Klamath Falls area. This event will be held on the pubic shooting ground of the national - wildlife refuge -on--the California side of the state line road. Pheasants are traditionally used in the trial. Bob Nieman's Injury Reported Not Serious Baltimore CU.R) The Balti more Orioles received an im portant "lift" today with the announcement that outfielder Bob Nieman will be able to open the season next Monday against the Washington Senators. Nieman, who hit .320 last sea son, was feared to have suffered a hairline fracture of the right shoulder last Tuesday, but X rays taken Thursday by Dr. Er win Mayer revealed no break. About 85 per cent of the multi million bushel corn crop in" a normal year is used to feed livestock.
