April 8, 1957 The Medical Roundup A New Medicine for Diabetes Ever since 1921, when insulin was discovered, doctors and pa tients have wished that some similar drug could be found that would work when giv en by mouth. Some physici ans worked for years trying to find some way of giving in sulin by mouth, Dr Alvares out never suc ceeded; the substance was di gested in the stomach and made inert. Recently, it was found that a certain s-lfa drug (tol butamide) will lower blood sugar when given by mouth, and re cently in New York City, 1100 experts met for a two-day con ference on the subject, sponsor ed by the New York Academy of Sciences. The drug worked well in from 50 to 75 per cent of cases. It works best for per sons more than 40 years of age with a mild form of diabetes. In cases of children and young per sons with a severe form of dia betes it is hardly worth trying. It will help perhaps one in three persons between the ages of 20 and 40 years of age, who have a mild form of the disease. In many cases now a patient finds he can shift over from insului to the new drug. Dr. Henry Dolger of New York reported that he had seen no bad side reactions. Dr. Alex ander Marble of the Joslin Clinic in Boston reported 66 per Around Hollywood Hollywood (U.R) Red But tons, a short-lived sensation on television, is rising from the ashes as a changed char acter. He now is a dramatic a c t o r "in the movies. Little Red was the George Gobel of TV back in 1953, in the dear, old days Aline Mosby Ol suaigiu windshields and Italian hair cuts. But, as TV victims know, fans are as fickle as the flick of a dial, and the hungry medium can burn up a career that in movies or radio might have last ed a decade. After -three years and 34 writers, Red was sent to the showers. Now he's begun a new career that may turn out bigger than the old. Red copped a plum role, star billing in a Marlon Brando picture, "Sayonara." Role Promising Director Josh Logan thinks Red's role may do for him what "From Here to Eternity" did to a then-slipping singer, Frank Sinatra. "I'm awfully young to be hav ing a comeback," the 32-year-old comedian grinned. "I couldn't be happier I have the best part of my career ahead of me. This is a straight dramatic part, not one gag. "Of course," he added wryly, "some of my comedy shows turn ed out that way." In his TV days Red was famed for hiring small armies of writ ers and firing them two weeks later. As he says, "I opened a Chinese fortune cookie when we were on location in Japan for 'Sayonara' and it said, 'Help me, I'm a writer for Red Buttons.' " Firings Explained "I hired a lot of writers be cause I was trying to get a good show," he explained. Red reflected on his slide out of TV and said, "the trouble starts when you realize during the second year how good you were the first year. The first year you're numb. You lose per spective. You look through very rose-colored glasses. "When you settle down and have time to think, that , fear starts. You say, 'I've got to stay up there, I want to last for- UAW May Seek Work Week With Four Days Atlantic City, N.J. (U.R) United Auto Workers Chief Walter Reuther disclosed Satur day that the union would de mand a four-day work week in contract negotiations next year. Reuther said the union mem bership w-as overwhelmingly in favor of a "shorter week not j a shorter day." j The TJAW president also said j at a news conference preceding j the opening today of the union's i 16th convention that the auto industry would be asked for higher take-home pay. He did not specifiy' how much. Washington (U.R) Two heli copters for President Eisenhow er's personal use have been de livered but have been flown- to Olmsted Air Force base at Mid dletown, Pa., for exhaustive tests, it was disclosed Saturday. 1? e.? . Emeritus Consultant in Medicine, Mayo Clinic Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation cent success in treating more than 400 patients. In all, some 1500 patients with diabetes have now been treated. Depends on Cells According to Dr. Loubatieres, of Montpelier, France, a favor able response to the new drug seems to depend on the amount of insulin-producing cells left in the pancreas. For this reason, a child with a severe diabetes and practically no insulin pro duction, cannot be helped by the new drug. A point that I wish to empha size is that this new drug has been brought forward and de veloped by one" of America's great drug houses, presided over by laymen. Every year I receive a number of unpleasant and ac cusing letters from friends of cancer quacks who assure me that we in the medical profes sion are so selfish and narrow minded that when a cure for can cer is discovered by a quack or other layman we refuse to use it. I hope these people will note now that when some chemists who never practiced medicine came forward with a new drug that looked promising, within a year it had been tried out eagerly by able physicians in every civilized , part of the globe. No one cared a hoot where the drug had come fom or who had found it; all the doc tors wanted to know was, would it work, was it safe, and where could they get some of it. Every doctor is so happy when he can bring help to his patients that he will try anything that looks promising and safe. By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent ever, I have to be better." "Now," he shrugged. "I'm getting a lot of action, lots of movie offers. I'm darn near as hot now as I was three years ago." 15 No. Central CAT naps are all right in some busi n esses but ALEXANDER & BROWN, 128 E. Main, must stay wide awake.
