Committee have had a chance to ! study proposed amendments, the j committee decided Thursday. ! One amendment would re- j quire the State Department of j Education to submit the budget for the community college pro gram starting in 1959. Sunday. April 7. 1957 The Medical Roundup l f . Vy- Hope for a Measles Vaccine Although measles is often a mild disease, in some cases it is very severe, or it can pro duce an ence phalitis or brain fever that can leave the child dull ed and handi capped for life. Hence it is hopeful that recently D r s. F. L. Black, or Alvarez M. Keissig, ana J. L. Melnick, of Yale discover ed that the virus of measles will grow rapidly on human cancer cells in a laboratory test-tube. In doing this, it undergoes a drastic change, ' and loses its forest Protection May Cost About $6 Million in '57 Salem Preliminary figures indicate that approximately S6, 000.000 will be spent during 1957 for forest protection on the 12.000,000 acres of forest lands coming under the jurisdiction of the state forestry department and its cooperating forest pro tection associations, according to Assistant State Forester ames H. Walker, who is in charge of pro tection. "By far the greater part of this money comes from the oper ators and the land owners," Walker said. "These private in terests will spend approximate ly $4,500,000 which includes the cost of falling snags in the oper ating areas, watchman services, tools and equipment as well as the patrol assessments to the as sociations and tax. roll costs ex tended by the state forester on privately owmed forest lands. Cost to State "The cost to the state will in clude approximately $700,000 from the general fund and an additional S300.000 that will be spent in fire proofing the Tilla mook burn and other areas of state forest and under the forest rehabilitation program. The fed eral government will contribute an additional $600,000 under the cooperative Clark-McNary act." This does not indicate the to tal amount that will be made available during the season if conditions are such as to require additional expenditures, Walker added. There will be more than $1,000,000 in a special fund that will be available for fire sup pression in case of a serious fire situation. This includes the west ern Oregon fund of more than $700,000 which has accumulated through a four-cent severance tax on all timber harvested in the western part of the state and another fund of nearly $300,000 which is made up of 10 per cent of the gross income from the sale of products of the various state forests. The latter money is limited to fire suppression on state owned land, Walker said. Salem (U.R) The House has passed Senate joint memorial 6 urging Congress to provide suf ficient funds to complete plan ning on Green Peter dam. The reason this discovery is so hopeful is that the best type of a vaccine is a so-called live one, made from a virus that has been so changed as to lose its power of doing harm in the human body, but not its power of producing protective anti bodies in the blood. For instance, the vaccine we use again small pox is made from smallpox virus made almost harmless to man by being passed through a calf. Prevention of Cancer Many persons ask what on earth can they do to lessen the danger .of getting cancer. People who have much cancer in the family are particularly worried about their danger. According to Dr. Harold P. Rusch, of the University of Wis consin, a helpful thing that a person could do would be to keep from getting stout. He be lieves that Dr. C. A. Baumann, who wrote in 1946, was right in saying that if people with a tendency to gain weight would only eat each day a bit less than they need they would be much less likely to get cancer. There' are ' a number of rea sons for believing this, both from experiments on animals and from the fact that stout people are more subject to cancer than are thin people. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to an swer requests for information or to attempt to diagnose, by mail.
