He may be right, The Mother's Day sale alone ' should net Monaco several millions. Asking 0 Queries from clients. Q. Is the type of cigar smoked by Sir Winston Churchill, British states man, the longest Havana cigar regularly retailed? A. No, sir. The longest Havana cigar is the one called the "Partagas Visible Immensas." It is 93A inches in length . . .Q. How old is Qfcarles Chaplin Jr.? Which of the many wives of Charles Chaplin Sr. was Junior's mother? A. Charles Chaplin Jr. is now 30 years old. His mother is Lita Grey, who was the second Mrs. Charles Chaplin. Asidei Although Boris Karloff, the actor, whose real name is Wil liam Pratt, has lived and worked in the United States for over 40 years he is still a British citizen . . .That way of life previously referred to as featuring "Wine, Women and Song" is now called "Whisky, Wagering and Worn en. As a saleman of railroad equip ment "Diamd Jim" Brady had an income of $20,000 a week and no income tax to pay. . .Exten sive research indicates that men are 12 per cen more brainy than women but not as tricky. Among The Married A 42-year-old British wife, be lieving it too late in her life for her to have a blessed event, adopted a girl. And so what? Shortly after that she gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. Speak ing of women of 40 and over hav ing unexpected births, I heard of a woman of 42 who gave birth td triplets. Also of a woman who had two children be fore she was 23 and none again until she was 45. So, Mister, you see it is as I am always telling you. That is, just because your wife is over 40, don't get the idea that you will never be again call ed upon to pace the hospital waiting room floor as a nervous, anxious expectant papa. Sidelights That extremely brilliant Brit ish literary lady, Rebecca West, recently said. "My favorite part of the world is the countryside of America. You must go to Penn sylvania and you'll love Amer ica" ... In the traditional Italian wedding ceremony both bride and groom have a best man. If that practice was in vogue in this country, who do you think would have been your wife's best man? Passing By It is a good idea for a sales woman to be genial and friendly but calling the feminine custom ers "Honey" or "Dear" seems to be over-doing it a little. . .Billy Sunday, the evangelist of the yesteryear, was at one time a major league ballplayer. U.R) The Champaign County gallows, used only twice since 1845, has been hauled away to the dump from the basement of the county court building. Although the structure was built in 1845, it did not serve its purpose until 1898. Then, 23 years later, it was used for the second and last time. Cubs he struck out. If that isn't the record for consecutive strike outs by one player what is? Best Seller' "True Love" as sung by Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby is a better selling recording in England than anything sung by Elvis Presley. In the most recent list of best sellers in England, the Kelly Crosby recording is fourth on the list. "Hound Dog" by Presley is 13th. Incidentally, the Kelly Crosby "True Love" disc is not sold in Monaco. Also no films in which Grace Kelly appears are shown in that principality. If a resident of Monaco wants to see a Grace Kelly picture he has to go over the border to France. Get It Rright Once more I see it said that Hetty Green had a fortune of over $60 million, she lived in a cheap run-down tenement house on the lower East Side of Man hattan. That's not so. For a per iod Hetty lived at the Hotel Plaza, the world famous luxury hotel. She also lived at the celebrated St. George Hotel in Brooklyn. Her husband and her daughter, Sylvia, lived with her. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Sloan and daughter, Brenda, visited at Garden Notes By C. B. CORDY County Extension Agent for Horticulture Lawns should be planted as soon as the soil can be properly prepared. Getting the soil well prepared is essential to the es tablishment of a satisfactory lawn. A fine, firm seed bed should be worked up. It should not be worked any deeper than is necessary to level the area. If the soil is a heavy clay it Can be loosened up by covering 1 inch deep with sawdust and thoroughly mixing this with the soil. As the sawdust will absorb all of the natural fertility a rather heavy application of a commercial fertilizer is neces sary. Three pounds of ammonium sulphate or 10 pounds of a com plete fertilizer per 100 square feet would be sufficient. If no sawdust is used five pounds of a complete fertilizer per 100 square feet would be adequate. This should be mixed with the soil just before planting. Lawn Grass Three or four pounds of lawn grass should be seeded on each 1,000 square feet. This seed should be sown lightly and the area covered two cr three times in different directions to insure a uniform stand. After sowing the seed the area should be very lightly raked or a thin lay er of peat moss or sawdust should be scattered to protect the seed from drying out too rapidly. The selection of a satisfactory lawn grass depends on individual taste. In the more humid areas of Oregon bent grasses are the most popular but in this area, with hot dry summers, bent grasses are very unsatisfactory. Red Creeping Fescue is one of the most satisfactory grasses and grows well in the shade, stands lots of traffic and does not creep into the flower beds. Its big drawback is it goes dor mant and turns brown in the summer if allowed to get dry. As it goes dormant when dry it is difficult to green the -lawn up again before fall. Kentucky Blue grass and Mer ion blue grass are also very good. The Merion blue grass makes a i denser, more springy turf and has a darker green color. They are a little coarser than fescues and don't grow quite as well in the shade. They also creep into the flower beds but this is not a major disadvantage. Coasfal Employment Above 1956 Figure San Francisco (U.R) Wage and salary employment, exclud ing domestic and agricultural workers, totalled 5,626,100 in o the three Pacific Coast states in mid-February about the same as the previous month, but 271, 100 above last year. The Department of Labor said Thursday that the slight January-February increase of 4,100 workers this year although following the expected seasonal trend did not show the strength of the corresponding periods of the last two years. California employment of 4, 399.700 in February was up to 12,700 from January, but Oregon was down 2,000 to a total of 464, oOO. Washington employment de clined by 6.600 to 761,800.
