Swallows Prefer Nest
In Open, Study Shows

life researcher lor the Univer
sity of Wisconsin said tree swal
lows prefer their nests out in
the open away from trees.
R. S. Ellarson, who has been
studying the habits of swallows
in the university arboretum for
eight years, concluded that his
tin can nests in the open attract
more tree swallows than those
close to trees.
He said the location of nests
has a lot to do with determining
what type of birds will occupy
them. Bluebirds favor nests close
to trees, while wrens like nests
which are placed near bushes..
Ellarson also recommended that
the nests should be at least 30
feet apart.
